    I'll leave you with those contrasting emotions from today's final two League Cup second-round ties.

    For Rangers, they entertain Standard Liege on Thursday looking to secure qualification for the Europa League knock-out stage and with St Mirren lying in wait in the League Cup quarter-finals.

    Celtic head to Italy to face AC Milan for what for them is a dead rubber, missing from a domestic quarter-final for the first time in many a year and with question marks hanging over the future of manager Neil Lennon.

  2. All change for Old Firm fortunes

    It's amazing how football can turn in just a few months.

    Celtic ended last season on a high despite Covid-19 ending the campaign early - after another league title and another domestic treble.

    Rangers were wondering how they could end that run and some were wondering if Steven Gerrard could survive another season as manager without a trophy.

    Tonight, Rangers not only lead the Premiership - and their Europa League group - but their rivals are out of Europe, 11 points adrift in the top flight and are being subjected to fans protests outside their stadium calling for manager Neil Lennon to be sacked after a League Cup exit at home to Ross County.

  3. Gerrard shrugs off Celtic exit

    Rangers manager Steven Gerrard tells Premier Sports that he is not thinking about Celtic's shock exit.

    "We're focused on the next round," he says. "It's about facing each challenge as it comes. We focus on what happens in the Rangers camp.

    "The challenge and the aim is to go all the way - it doesn't matter who's in the competition and who's been knocked out. It's about Rangers trying to compete for silverware, year in, year out."

    As for the win over Falkirk, he adds: "A strong performance all-round, a lot of positives, good goals and managed to get a few debuts in there as well."

  4. St Mirren v Rangers the standout?

    I think Ross County will be disappointed they came all the way to Glasgow to beat Celtic and didn't even get a home draw. Rangers at St Mirren is the standout, but I am looking at St Johnstone, who won a tricky game at Motherwell and are unbeaten in 10 games with a bit of momentum. They will fancy their chances going to Dunfermline, but Dunfermline have started the season really well and that looks like a great tie

    I don't think Rangers will be overly happy. I think St Mirren played well against Aberdeen yesterday. Jack Ross taking his Hibs side back to Alloa will not be easy either. Dunfermline will be happy to get a home tie

    Rangers' reward for their win over Falkirk is another away tie - against a St Mirren side who ousted another Premiership side, Aberdeen, yesterday.

    Ross County have another tough away game against top-flight rivals after beating Celtic - at Livingston.

    Championship leaders Dunfermline host another side who are on form - Premiership outfit St Johnstone.

    Meanwhile, after beating one Edinburgh side, second-tier part-timers Alloa host another - a Hibs side now led by their former boss, Jack Ross.

  8. Positives to take - Falkirk's McCracken

    Falkirk co-manager David McCracken on BBC Radio Scotland: "It's disappointing to be beaten 4-0, but it shows the level Rangers are playing at right now.

    "There were a lot of positives to take from the game, we'll learn from tonight - not just the players, but us and the backroom staff too.

    "The goals were disappointing, the first goal especially - losing it so early on. But it was encouraging that the boys kept coming back.

    "We were still creating chances in the second half and we had a couple of opportunities. We just couldn't take them."

    When you look down at the eight teams in the draw, you have to say Rangers are heavy favourites. Maybe Hibs would run them close. If they avoid an away tie at Easter Road and with the levels they are putting in, it's difficult to see who can stop them

    Good experience for not only Falkirk players but the management to test themselves against the best team in the country at the moment. I think their gameplan was good and they have a squad that are well equipped to win their division

    There was never a chance they would suffer the fate of Glasgow rivals and holders Celtic, who lost to Ross County earlier, from the moment Jermain Defoe gave them an early lead.

    Goals from Calvin Bassey and Borna Barisic before the break allowed Steven Gerrard to hand debuts to a couple of teenagers as captain James Tavernier added icing on the cake.
