Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo tells BBC Sport: "Football is a physical game, a game of contact and referees taking the decisions and being fair but the referee is not good enough to whistle, Lee Mason is not good enough.

"The way he handles the game, it is about the major, crucial decisions, it is about how he handles the players, both teams are always arguing the decision. He must improve because the game requires good refereeing and good handling of the game so the players can perform.

"It is his job, he has to improve, he has to get better. When we saw the nomination, we did not understand it because he is a point of distraction. He worsens the flow of the game.

"Owen Otasowie did well, he is young and strong. The Burnley players had to really foul him and the talent is there. A lot of things to improve on, he handles himself well and will go better in the future."

David Moyes will be disappointed with the nature of the goal.

Chelsea dominated for the next period without really creating much.

Then West Ham took control, but a big chance for Timo Werner. He didn’t take it. We’re in for a cracking second half.

Rayan: Can Timo Werner ever hit a barn door with a banjo?

Kaustubh Joshi: Exactly how many clear cut chances is Timo Werner allowed to fluff before Lampard “admits” his concern. Being a faithful blue, I am deeply concerned already.

Lifa Nati: Can any one of the journalists ask Lampard after the match why he starts with 2 strikers? Timo is also short of confidence right now, should be given a rest. Manager still learning on the job

Steve: I don't believe Werner is intending to miss. He will come good!

Timo Werner scored 35 goals last season as the apex of RBL's attack. It's all very well and good saying he can play anywhere across the front line but it's not where he's at his best - surely?

  6. 'Werner needs a goal'published at 20:53 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2020

    Chelsea 1-0 West Ham

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Only Timo Werner will know if he's playing out of position.

He's an extremely versatile player. He can play in any of the positions across the front.

That’s eight games without a goal now.

Even in the first half there was a real lack of conviction. It wasn’t a finish of a confident forward. He needs a goal. You can see he’s lacking confidence.

  7. 'A very important result'published at 20:51 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2020

    FT: Burnley 2-1 Wolves

    Burnley

Burnley boss Sean Dyche speaking to BBC Sport: "I thought it was deserved. Generally over the last five or six games performances have been good including tonight. We created some great chances and hyper critically we could have had the game sealed earlier on.

"It is a very important result, the players have worked hard."

On Ben Mee getting injured trying to prevent a goal before the offside flag went up: "It is not the official's fault, it is the rules. Ben Mee gets an injury that could cost him from having to make a tackle and then he's flagged offside. Just make a decision, the officials have it really difficult. I like VAR but I think it can be streamlined, it is in a peculiar place with the way officials are having to officiate the game."

@awfre: I don’t think Timo does himself any good missing these chances. He needs to score to keep his confidence up. Chelsea look all over the place at the moment. WHU still very much in this.

Ow that looks painful! Jorginho lands awkwardly after going up for a header and lands straight-legged, his knee is bent in the wrong direction. Eeesh.

Big save. Ball pops up to Werner one-on-one.

It's a tame shot, he just prods it forward. No real conviction.

  13. CLOSE!published at 44 mins

    Chelsea 1-0 West Ham

It's a great chance and it perhaps sums up how it's going for Timo Werner at the moment.

Christian Pulisic nicks the ball on halfway and sets off at pace through a gap. Werner is on his shoulder, the pass comes at the right time and the German should take a touch and fire in. Instead the ball gets stuck under his feet and he can only poke a shot straight at Lukasz Fabianski.

Maybe not - West Ham threaten again and David Moyes may actually be the more pleased of the two managers at the moment. A low cross in is cut out on the stretch by Jorginho and Edouard Mendy scoops it up.

I haven't seen a free-kick given for a backpass for years and years and we don't get one here either.

Chelsea wrestle control of the joypad and have a spell of controlled possession now. West Ham were looking like ending the half on top but Jorginho and co are just keeping the ball now.

I don't know what Frank Lampard's Christmas Day plans were but they must have been amazing. He looks so cheesed off and has done ever since he was out for the warm up.

West Ham have reacted pretty well to going behind.

  19. Postpublished at 32 mins

We could have had another goalfest here tonight - there's chances at both ends. Christian Pulisic sets off on a Hazard-esque weaving run and beats a defender to fly into the area - but his final touch is too heavy and the chance is gone.

There was me calling out zonal marking and it turns out West Ham were the 20th and final side to concede from a set piece in the Premier League this season.

    Fair dos.
