Matt Andrews: More nervous tonight because Aston Villa can actually compete. Every other season you have little chance and a point is excellent. Just feel I'll be disappointed if we don't win now.

I am not surprised Chelsea boss Frank Lampard criticised his side's performance in their defeat by Arsenal, because they were well short.

The Blues have now lost three of their past four league games and this next test is also far from easy, against an Aston Villa side that are playing well and are full of confidence.

Villa had to play with 10 men for the whole second half of their win over Crystal Palace but still looked the more dangerous side going forward.

I'm still going with Chelsea here though, because I think we will see a reaction from their players. They can't be as bad as that again, surely?

Whatever happens to Villa at Stamford Bridge, they have still given themselves an excellent platform for the rest of the season. It took them 24 games to reach 25 points last season, so they have done it in nine games fewer this time.

Being realistic, I don't see them challenging for the top four, but they have already proved a lot of people wrong with their results so far.

Lampard won't be sacked if Chelsea lose today but I think a couple more defeats in next few games and he's out. Like Arteta and Ole, he is too inexperienced.

    FT: Crystal Palace 1-1 Leicester

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace Roy Hodgson told Amazon Prime: "It certainly was [positive] in the second half but it almost cost my assistant Ray Lewington a heart attack to produce that energy. That is what Crystal Palace want to be and we pressurised the ball so much better. We looked dangerous going forward but unfortunately we do not get the full three points because [Harvey] Barnes scored with a wonderful strike. That could have led to us conceding another one but luckily we didn’t, because that would have been very harsh. It is definitely a step forward.

"In the first half, we couldn’t really believe what we were seeing because we know we are better than the performance. They were making life difficult for us, and in contrast, we were occupying the right positions but not really having an effect. The players definitely responded much better in the second half and their performance stepped up more than one gear, and they started playing the football we know they can play.

"Wilfred [Zaha] has been very good. He has passion and a lot of love for the club and, of course he has quality. Today he showed that and his determination and he is directing it in the right way, to help us win points. Today was important to put a stop to a bad run. The last two games have been very painful and hurt us deeply, but today makes us feel better about ourselves. Staying in the league, this year more than any other, is not going to be easy, we could find ourselves quite quickly dragged into a relegation battle."

  5. How the stats stack uppublished at 17:23 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2020

Chelsea v Aston Villa (17:30 GMT)

Chelsea have won 10 of their last 11 Premier League matches against Aston Villa, including the last six in a row.

Villa have not won at Stamford Bridge since a 3-1 Premier League victory in December 2011. It is Villa's only away success in this fixture in 18 years.

And despite losing three of their last four Premier League matches, Chelsea are unbeaten in six home games, winning four and drawing two.

Meanwhile, Villa's only away league loss came at West Ham on 30 November, winning all five of their other games on the road.

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson to MOTD: "We were not at all happy with our first half and it took an apoplectic performance from my assistant Ray Lewington at half-time to shake them into life.

"We were dumbfounded that we were as passive as we were. They were more aggressive than us and we were being pressured into mistakes.

"Then we made life difficult for them and put them under pressure. We were much happier with the second half and we got our reward with the goal.

"Ashley Barnes' strike was a good goal and then the last 10 minutes were tough for us but we saw it through.

"No question it was a step in the right direction. Liverpool knocked us backand it was a daunting task today but we handled it well."

The Frenchman has scored in each of his last seven appearances against Villa in all competitions.

    FT: Crystal Palace 1-1 Leicester

    Leicester City

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers told Amazon Prime: "We should win the game. We had good control of the first half with the penalty and a few other chances we should have put away, without any real defensive problems. Second half, we made a mistake for their goal but then we picked up the tempo and Harvey [Barnes] scores a good goal. Apart from that first 15 minutes of the second half, we had good control and that is a game you have to win."

On Kelechi Iheanacho's penalty miss: "I said at half time, it was one you have to let go of. He practised yesterday and hit five out of five, so he was confident, but it is just one of those things. Harvey was outstanding, to have played his second 90 minutes [in two days] having done so well against Manchester United as well. He won us the penalty in the first half and he is a threat.

"We have had two tough games and you know Palace can be very good on their day. I still feel we dominated the game with the changes we made but I'm pleased we kept fighting at the end."

Luke: Werner finally dropped. No goals in 10 games is not good enough for a freebie striker, let alone the amount Chelsea wasted on him.

James Jennrich: If Chelsea lose today I think you can pretty much say bye to Lampard, with Thomas Tuchel waiting. He has to win and win well or Roman will drop the axe.

Leicester winger Harvey Barnes to MOTD: "We are disappointed, it's a chance wasted for us to build on the last two results. We wasted some opportunities.

"We have got so much depth and quality in the squad, everyone's ready to step in so the changes we made aren't an excuse. We want to keep clean sheets.

"I am very happy to score, I just tried to work a yard and get a shot off. Goals are what I need to add to my game, as an attacking player you need as many as you can, that's how you win games. I'm happy with my start to the season."

  13. No room for Abraham or Wernerpublished at 17:11 Greenwich Mean Time 28 December 2020

Tammy Abraham's 85th-minute goal at Arsenal on Boxing Day was Chelsea's first shot on target in the match.

Abraham has scored 21 goals since the start of last season, more than double the tally of any other Chelsea player.

Villa's tally of 25 points after 13 games is their best in the Premier League for 22 years.

A ninth win of the campaign against Chelsea would match their total number of victories from last season.

They have also recorded an unrivalled eight league clean sheets this season - one more than they registered in the entirety of 2019-20.

And they have gone four successive Premier League games without conceding for the first time since February 2010.

Crystal Palace defender James Tomkins: "First half we weren't at it, we were a bit nervous on the back of some heavy defeats, we were down about that and it showed. At half-time Ray Lewington gave us a talking to and we proved we are a better team than we showed. It's a great response in that second half.

"They are very sharp players, when Jamie Vardy came on and I was playing my first game in 10 months it livened it up. It was a special moment from them for the goal, that's what good players do.

"Guaita is a good keeper, he's been brilliant ever since he came here and he saved me today. Hopefully I can repay him one day.

"Wilfried Zaha does that time and time again, he's an impressive player. It's a joy to play with him and hopefully he can keep doing that for us."

Leicester midfielder Harvey Barnes on Amazon Prime: "First half, we didn't create a lot of chances and we were disappointed with their goal, but it's been a tough few days.

"We are disappointed not to get three points and we weren't as clinical as we have been, but it's onto the next game.

"We want to win every game, but if we can't do that, then we don't want to lose them. It has been a very busy schedule with some great results so we are happy with where we are in the table."
