Joseph Bolton: I know it’s been said a lot recently but watching I’m Argentina vs England and those 5 mins between two famous goals (for polar opposite reasons)... how can it be this tense despite the score line being 34 years old. What a player

David Williams: I would say it is the best WC goal ever. #bbcfootball, external But if Mourinho was England manager he would have said "Why did you not bring him down" Terrible play from England midfielders+defenders

Andy Penman: Best bit about *that* goal isn’t the two players he beats on the edge of the box, it’s the turn he makes to get away from two near the centre circle when he gets the ball

Luke LSB: Isn’t that a blatant foul seconds before Maradona gets it for the goal of the century. In the modern game that would’ve been just as controversial but it’s not even mentioned here!

The game was altered by an unfair decision or non recognition, but otherwise Argentina have played with more imagination, attacked more and deserve to be in the lead.

    Argentina 2-0 England

    Great hit by Glenn Hoddle!

That is the first first time the Tottenham man has really sprung into life in this contest, as he fires a free-kick around the wall and forces goalkeeper Nery Pumpido into a diving one-handed save.

Diego Maradona has taken a knock to the head. Meanwhile, we're getting another look at his first goal, which it is now clear was a handball... he's got one over England and Peter Shilton there. I'm sure there'll be no hard feelings between the two.

Off trots Peter Reid, who had a knock before the game and took a few more during it.

If you thought Barry Davies' commentary of that wonderful Diego Maradona goal was special, Uruguayan Victor Hugo Morales takes it to another level...

"Maradona has the ball, two mark him, he touches the ball. The genius of world football dashes to the right and leaves the third and is going to pass to Burruchaga. It's still Maradona! Genius! Genius! Genius! Ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta. Gooooooooooal!

"Gooooooooooal! I want to cry! Dear God! Long live football! Gooooooooooal! Diegoal! Maradona!

"It's enough to make you cry, forgive me. Maradona, in an unforgettable run, in the play of all time. Cosmic kite! What planet are you from? Leaving in your wake so many Englishmen, so that the whole country is a clenched fist shouting for Argentina?

"Argentina 2, England 0. Diegoal, Diegoal, Diego Armando Maradona. Thank you, God, for football, for Maradona, for these tears, for this, Argentina 2, England 0."

When we look at our own players back home, some of them being sold expensively to Italy, I think in all honesty we can say there is no light that shines as brightly as Maradona.

He can do it on his own, he can lay it on for other people; can take part in inter-passing movements, has fantastic pace, also tremendous strength; he's won a couple of headers in midfield and on that fine one, unfair or not, he still read the backpass quicker than Shilton did and the ball was running away from him.

You have to say that's magnificent! There is no doubt about that goal. Pure football genius.

If the first was illegal, the second was one of the best we've seen in this championship. The crowd in the Azteca stand to Maradona.

GOAL - Argentina 2-0 Englandpublished at 55 mins

    Diego Maradona (55 mins)

That is magical! What a sensational goal by Diego Maradona to double Argentina’s lead

If his first was mischievous, this second is just magnificent.

The barrel-chested forward collects a pass five yards inside the England half, facing the opposition goal, and he spins on a Peso before accelerating away from Peter Reid in the Mexican heat.

He shimmies inside Terry Butcher and then eases beyond Terry Fenwick into the penalty area.

Maradona shapes to shoot but instead rolls the ball past the onrushing Peter Shilton and slides his effort into an empty net, despite Butcher’s last-ditch attempts to tackle him.

What skill! What poise! What composure! That is super-human from Diego Armando Maradona.

Surely one of the greatest goals the World Cup has ever seen?

Of course, we have the luxury of being able to see that goal again on the replay. You have to think, one day in the near future, it would make sense to allow the officials to view such incidents again on a television screen when it comes to such clear and obvious foul play.

  20. Postpublished at 52 mins

    Argentina 1-0 England

Well, the England players are not at all happy - they’re marching after Tunisian referee Ali Bin Naser. Terry Fenwick is pointing to his hand.

We’re just seeing a replay, and that is a clear handball by Diego Maradona! He nudges it beyond Shilton with his fist. Somehow the officials have missed that.

Clever? Cunning? It does not matter now, the goal stands, the ‘Pibe’ from Buenos Aires has given his country the lead.
