  1. Did Maradona use a hand?published at 18:13 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2020

    Barry Davies
    BBC commentator at the Azteca

England are appealing for offside but the goal is given.

Or was it the use of the hand that England are appealing against? Maradona's arm was up...

  2. goal

GOAL - Argentina 1-0 Englandpublished at 51 mins

    Diego Maradona (51 mins)

Argentina have the lead, and it’s that man Diego Maradona! Who else?!

The diminutive forward sets off on a jinking run towards the England penalty box, shifts it right to Jorge Valdano and it loops back into his path off the boot of Steve Hodge.

Somehow, the 5ft 5in Napoli star outleaps England goalkeeper Peter Shilton to help it into an empty net.

    The Azteca is going crazy.

Maradona sprints off to celebrate and beckons his team-mates to join him. He’s broken the deadlock.

A bit better from Bobby Robson's side, working a series of crosses into the box.

But Argentina now look dangerous on the break and but for a better touch Jorge Valdano might have released Diego Maradona there.

    Argentina 0-0 England

It's as you were in the second half, Argentina have come out flying, England with their backs to the wall once more.

    BBC Two

The BBC will show the 2006 documentary ‘When Lineker Met Maradona’ on BBC Two at 22:00 tonight.

This BBC documentary sees Gary Lineker travel to Buenos Aires to spend the weekend with Diego Maradona and talk to him about the 1986 World Cup quarter-final between England and Argentina and that Hand of God goal.

  7. 'We know how good Maradona is'published at 18:07 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2020

    Argentina 0-0 England

Former England defender Emlyn Hughes: "Diego Maradona has done well and we all know how good he is. Bobby Robson has a major part to play now at half-time. It hasn't been a great game but he need to go in and tell them 'Ey, we have a chance.'

"We can push Glenn Hoddle further forward and if he can start playing and putting the ball to the front players, we can do well. Argentina are nothing special."

  8. KICK-OFFpublished at 45 mins

    Argentina 0-0 England

Here we go. A big second half coming up.

  9. 'England showing so much respect'published at 18:01 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2020

    Argentina 0-0 England

    Terry Venables
Barcelona manager on World Cup Grandstand

We don't know what England have been sent out to do, they are showing the opposition so much respect. Glenn Hoddle is defending with the rest, we need tor risk him and leave him up the pitch so Argentina will worry about him.

    And that is half-time.

Goalless at the break at the Azteca in Mexico City.

    Argentina 0-0 England

Right then, a rare chance for England.

Glenn Hoddle clips a free-kick over the top for Kenny Sansom, who beats the Argentine offside trap, but Steve Hodge comes across and almost takes the ball off him - but he's offside!

    Argentina 0-0 England

    Barry Davies
    BBC commentator at the Azteca

I think it is fair to say that only Maradona has looked like making a breakthrough, he's the only one who's committed players in the last third of the field.

You feel like it's going to take something special to break the deadlock in Mexico - a moment of magic or ingenuity, perhaps.

  14. Postpublished at 40 mins

    Argentina 0-0 England

Diego Maradona skips down the centre of the field, drawing in three England defenders before shifting the ball right to Jose Luis Cuciuoffo, who fires well over.

Maradona is down on the floor, Jimmy Hill says there's nothing in it - "he's down looking for sympathy," claims the BBC pundit in the Azteca.

  15. Postpublished at 38 mins

    Argentina 0-0 England

England are defending stoutly, they're comfortable with anything lofted into their box.

Diego Maradona, arms pumping by his sides, gets to the byline and digs out a cross, but again Peter Shilton is there to deal with it.

  16. 'Shilton can prove he's the best'published at 17:50 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2020

    Argentina 0-0 England

    Jimmy Hill
    BBC Sport pundit

If England are going to win this game, goalkeeper Peter Shilton, the captain, will have an opportunity to prove he is the best. He has a lot more work to do yet. Not an easy task for England when Diego Maradona is in possession.

There are so many photographers by the corner flag that Diego Maradona cannot find space for a run up.

He whips the corner flag out and throws it on the floor, but is told to pick it back up by the linesman.

The Argentine then has to redress it after the flag falls off. Finally he floats in a corner that Peter Shilton leaps high to claim.

  18. CLOSE!published at 32 mins

    Argentina 0-0 England

Diego Maradona will fancy his chances from here.

Just outside the England box, the Argentina forward flicks a curling left-footed effort beyond the wall but it drops just wide of the goal.

First real chance for the South Americans.

  19. Postpublished at 31 mins

    There goes Diego Maradona!

Collecting the ball halfway inside England territory and coasting forward before being bundled over by Steve Hodge, who insists to the referee he never touched him...

To Dare Is To Do...Nothing?: some things never change. Frustrating watching England play in this first half. An isolated striker and a lack of imagination.

amar singh: England should have started John Barnes vs Argentina in 86. The midfield is pretty flat and keep pumping wayward diagonal balls in the direction of Beardsley and Lineker.
