It came from Newcastle's shocking corner - and they got punished!

When everyone comes forward, Newcastle don't have the pace to get back.

Fantastic bit of brilliance and goal from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. He punished Newcastle.

GOAL - Arsenal 1-0 Newcastlepublished at 49 mins

    Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

    This is far too easy.

Arsenal have all the space in the world on the counter-attack. It's one long ball by Thomas Partey which sets Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on his way.

He's one-on-one with Emil Krafth and there's only ever going to be one winner. He beats him on the outside then fires it into the roof of the net.

That all came from another poor Jonjo Shelvey corner...

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Jonjo Shelvey has another corner for Newcastle, but AGAIN, he doesn't even beat Alexandre Lacazette at the near post.

    Pulling my hair out!

  5. GREAT SAVE!published at 47 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Alexandre Lacazette feeds it through to Bukayo Saka on the right. He's in space but can't find Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the box.

It comes back to Lacazette though - he takes one touch then smashes it low towards goal. Karl Darlow reacts brilliantly to make a superb one-handed save and Jamaal Lascelles hastily hoofs it away!

Michael Smith: All for the different approach and formation but if you give the ball away that easily it's going to be the same outcome.

That big blob is where most of Andy Carroll's touches came in the first half. He only had two in the opposition box and both were a fair way out.

Joelinton and Callum Wilson haven't touched it once in the Arsenal box, while Miguel Almiron has had one touch - his shot from just inside which went over the bar.

    Hmmm.

Not so sure this "gloves off" Newcastle approach is much different to the gloves on approach in the final third?

    Thoughts?

  10. 'Both teams disappointing in the final third'published at 20:49 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2021

    HT: Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

    Karen Carney
Former England and Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think Newcastle have looked positive tonight, in terms of where they have come from and the scrutiny they have been under.

Arsenal have dominated with possession but I think they have been disappointing in terms of the final ball, the execution and testing Karl Darlow at times.

Both teams have been pretty much the same - disappointing in the final third.

  11. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:45 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2021

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

An intriguing half. Arsenal are dominating possession, getting plenty of crosses in and are creating chances but Newcastle have been fairly resilient.

  12. CLOSE!published at 45 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's cross takes a really awkward deflection off Emil Krafth and almost squeezes in at the near post!

Karl Darlow does well to get across and turn it around the post.

The corner comes in but David Luiz heads it over from an unmarked position. Nobody went with him. He should do better!

  13. Postpublished at 43 mins

First corner for Newcastle... Jonjo Shelvey doesn't beat the first man. Waste.

Positive play from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, picking it up from this left-hand side, driving in and Newcastle just back off him - I don't know why you back off and allow Aubameyang to drive into the penalty area! You can't allow a player like that to go on runs like that.

  15. Postpublished at 43 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Jonjo Shelvey plays a brilliant, searching ball over to Callum Wilson on the right and space opens up for Newcastle.

Miguel Almiron then picks out Andy Carroll but he can't connect with the volley. Another Almiron cross is then poked out for a corner by Thomas Partey.

Dennis: Newcastle have been positive tonight. Thumbs up to Steve Bruce.

Montymadman: Beware what you wish for Newcastle fans. Get rid of Bruce and who will come in? Mark Hughes anyone?

  17. Postpublished at 41 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Joelinton tries to get the better of Thomas Partey but he gets nowhere. Arsenal switch it over to the left but again, Miguel Almiron works his socks off to get back and intercept. He's been their best player so far but not in an attacking sense, which is what Newcastle need.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang tries to curl it into the bottom right corner moments later but skews it wide. Nice idea.

Sulaimon Adelekan: Smith Rowe is beginning to get all the hype from the fans. Please let the young player grow at his pace with no too much expectations and comparisons.

The reason I like Emile Smith Rowe is he just picks the ball up and runs with it. I want that unpredictable.

We need more of that Arsenal side because when you're predicable, it's quite easy to defend against, even the pass and movement. You can't defend against pace - that's what has set Arsenal apart the last few weeks.

Kieran Tierney curls one in from the left but Karl Darlow gathers it in.
