From his standards, three yards out, on his left foot, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang should be scoring that. That should be 1-0 to Arsenal. He has to be scoring those chances.

  2. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 15 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Emile Smith Rowe lays it off to Bukayo Saka on the right. He manages to squeeze a cross in which fizzes past the goalline.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is following up at the back post but he is stretching as he pokes it up and off the crossbar. The net was open - though the angle was tight.

Still, you'd put your money on...

  3. Postpublished at 13 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Callum Wilson does really well to hold the ball up under pressure from Thomas Partey and Rob Holding.

He wins a free-kick which is lifted into Andy Carroll but Arsenal get it away and set Emile Smith Rowe on his way down the right.

Bukayo Saka is then blocked off by the flailing arm of Jamal Lewis and now Arsenal have a free-kick.

Dennis Ethan: This is really a good match. Magpies have started well and a good tempo to the match.

Andrew Neil: Every time Miguel Almiron is set down the right he has to stop to pull it back onto his left giving Arsenal an extra second to reset and making the ball in much easier to defend. Why not put him on the left?

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Former England and Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

When I watched Newcastle against Brentford, they were abysmal! The passing, the intensity, awful. Tonight, however, has been a far better start from them, the patterns of play, the movement has improved.

They're fighting for the manger and they're fighting for the badge - and that is what fans want to see.

  6. Postpublished at 11 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Kieran Tierney hits it first-time on the overlap as he tries to put a cross into the box for Arsenal.

It smacks Emil Krafth straight in the stomach. He's a bit winded!

  7. Postpublished at 10 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Rob Holding absolutely clatters into Miguel Almiron. A painful one, but one Patrick Vieira would approve of.

Steve Bruce pretends he's annoyed but we all know he loves those tackles really.

Former England and Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Regardless of the teams below them, Newcastle need to play for the badge tonight, play for the fans and have a go.

Arsenal will have to play nice and quick, keep moving the ball, don't get involved in a physical battle with Newcastle because physically, Newcastle probably look a bit superior in terms of height and stature.

  9. Postpublished at 9 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang carries it down the left as Arsenal break after a Newcastle attack.

Alexandre Lacazette makes a run into the box but he's got two markers on him. Aubameyang wants to shape up on his right foot but Jamaal Lascelles does really well to hold his ground and force him wide.

It ends up in comfortably in the arms of Karl Darlow at the near post.

  10. Postpublished at 6 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Granit Xhaka, Kieran Tierney and Alexandre Lacazette try to link-up in the left corner but Emil Krafth is supported by Miguel Almiron.

Arsenal are starting to gain control of possession now though, as it comes back to David Luiz and onto Granit Xkaha at the back.

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

I think the changes are good for Newcastle. Steve Bruce had to do something. I like the fact that Andy Carroll is up top, he makes a difference. Newcastle's plan today is get balls out wide and crosses into the box.

  12. Postpublished at 4 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Jonjo Shelvey is seeing lots of the ball for Newcastle. He gets it back from Callum Wilson and moves it over to the right.

Arsenal win it back and it comes over to Cedric Soares, who wins a free-kick for having his shirt tugged back near the touchline.

  13. 'Maybe Bruce needs a change'published at 20:02 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2021

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

    Micah Richards
Former Man City defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Steve Bruce is a lovely bloke but maybe it is time for him to change - but maybe he can't change it.

I just think no matter what he does, the fans are not going to be happy. The football that he plays, is not good enough for the fans and he is not going to change that because he hasn't got the money to change it around and play expansive football.

Maybe the best for him - and the fans - is to have a change because he can do no right. This week he is doing it "his way" but surely he should've been allowed to do it "his way" from the start?!

  14. Postpublished at 2 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Arsenal put pressure on Newcastle early on as Granit Xhaka robs it off Andy Carroll in midfield.

It's crossed in from the right but Jonjo Shelvey is able to bring it away. Miguel Almiron then tries to find Carroll in the box but it's comfortable for Bernd Leno.

  16. 'The fans have never liked Bruce'published at 19:58 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2021

    Arsenal v Newcastle (20:00 GMT)

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's actually unlike Steve Bruce to come out and really get stuck into his players publicly and of course, that can have an effect.

Players will know what has gone on in the newspapers and the fans' perception of the way the team plays, the style of play. It's a massive risk and he has gone attacking tonight - but that could have its consequences as well.

Steve Bruce is on borrowed time. It's not going to last; the fans have never liked him.

No Dani Ceballos in the Arsenal squad tonight. Looks like he's joining Mesut Ozil on Twitter.
