Matty Longstaff has just played three passes in a row and all were backwards. Arsenal are pushing Newcastle deep but there's not too many outlets for Jonjo Shelvey and Longstaff to pick out.

Rob Elmore: I think Kieran Tierney could be one of the best left wingers of all time.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang tries to get past Emil Krafth but the defender does really well to just hold his ground and Aubameyang ends up running into him.

Miguel Almiron was back there again, blocking off the route inside and double-teaming.

Neither goalkeeper has done anything yet. Arsenal are probing but they need to be more clinical and Newcastle need a better supply into Andy Carroll and Callum Wilson.

There are opportunities here for both teams though...

Not been a classic so far. Arsenal are lacking a bit of something.

Arsenal are starting to get these chances on the counter-attack. Newcastle have got to be better when the ball goes into Callum Wilson and Andy Carroll. The balls haven't really been good enough so when it comes back out, there is no midfield and Newcastle are getting done.

The quality into them has got to be better. If I was a centre-forward I would be fuming with the stuff they are giving me.

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Cedric Soares has tried to pick out Alexandre Lacazette twice in as many minutes with crosses from the right.

So far, Newcastle have dealt with them but Lacazette is making those runs to the near post.

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Jonjo Shelvey's cross is cleared by David Luiz but only as far as Andy Carroll on the edge of the box.

Another ball comes in from the left by Newcastle but Kieran Tierney comes away with it.

Why is Carroll not in the box?

Smith Rowe has shown the potential of a Future England captain for sure.

  11. CLOSE!published at 27 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron try to link-up on the edge of the Arsenal box but Rob Holding is firm.

Thomas Partey then pings it over the top for Emile Smith Rowe, he has space to run into and tees up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the box.

The striker's effort is just over. So much space for Arsenal on the break...

Carl Seggie: What’s the worst that can happen tonight for Newcastle, a win and we are 3 points better off or a loss and maybe we get a new manager.

Noel Fitzpatrick: I would have scored that Aubameyang chance...and I'm thousands of miles away!!

You can see why Arsenal paid the money for Thomas Partey - he's such quality. He offers such stability out of possession for them, he can also see passes and he can keep it simple.

Newcastle can't get near him at the moment. Mikel Arteta will be glad Partey is back alongside Granit Xhaka to offer stability.

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Jamal Lewis does well to get a touch on the ball after Emily Smith Rowe flicks it on to Alexandre Lacazette in the box.

There's a very, very brief VAR check for a possible handball and a penalty but Lewis is outside the box and it hits his thigh.

  15. Postpublished at 25 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

    It's all Arsenal.

But Newcastle can break here. Miguel Almiron drives with the ball for most of the length of the pitch. He cuts inside of David Luiz and tees up Andy Carroll on the far side of the box.

He gives it back to Almiron to hit first time but his effort flies over the bar. He caught it nicely enough but it was never troubling Bernd Leno.

  16. 'Smith Rowe being really clever'published at 20:22 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2021

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

    Karen Carney
Former England and Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Emile Smith Rowe is being really clever because he is just playing on the outside shoulder of the midfield and he is kind of edging towards Bukayo Saka, so what he is trying to do is cause an overload and cause problems there for Jamal Lewis - and Newcastle can't cope with him and Saka. Lewis doesn't know what to do, it's 2 versus 1.

It must be something Mikel Arteta said, go and exploit that side, play as a 10 but play more on the right-hand side.

  17. Postpublished at 22 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

David Luiz heads it back across goal from a corner but Alexandre Lacazette has his back to goal.

Arsenal restart patiently - switching it around midfield and over to the right - before Thomas Partey skews a long-range effort way over.

  18. Postpublished at 20 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Bukayo Saka plays it short to Emile Smith Rowe. He links up with Kieran Tierney, looking for the one-two, but Jonjo Shelvey reads it and hoofs it away.

  19. Postpublished at 19 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle do have four attackers on but all of them are in their own half. Andy Carroll loses out to Granit Xhaka in the middle and it's laid off to Kieran Tierney.

He wins a corner off Miguel Almiron. Bukayo Saka to take...

  20. Postpublished at 18 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle

Bukayo Saka is just offside as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang crosses it into the middle following a lovely diagonal ball from David Luiz.

Ciaran Clark tried to chest it down and got it all wrong on the edge of his own area but he's saved by the whistle.
