  3. Wilshere rejoins Bournemouthpublished at 19:46 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2021

    Arsenal v Newcastle (20:00 GMT)

Jack Wilshere has rejoined Bournemouth on a deal until the end of the season.

Former Arsenal and West Ham midfielder Wilshere has been training with the first-team squad to maintain fitness after he left the Hammers in October.

The England midfielder, 29, previously made 27 appearances for the Cherries during a season-long loan from Arsenal in the 2016-17 Premier League campaign.

Wilshere is eligible to be part of the Bournemouth squad for Tuesday's Championship game at Derby County.

Newcastle were probably the better team in the cup with a defensive line up, makes me hope it's not going to be an embarrassing defeat tonight for Arsenal! But maybe the space could play into our hands if they do try attack.

In his latest BBC Sport column, former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer discusses the Premier League title race.

It is shaping up to be a thrilling title race and the unpredictability of the Premier League so far is one of the things we can look forward to continuing in the second half of the season.

You could argue a case for four or five teams to win it, and it is wide open - I can't remember it ever being as compact, with so few points separating the top teams at this stage, as it is this year.

These two teams met in the FA Cup last week, when Arsenal needed extra time to get through. I don't expect the Gunners to make such hard work of a win second time around.

Newcastle are on a bad run of eight games without a win, and they are not playing well either. The Magpies are quite a negative team at the best of times, but they have not been creating very much recently.

They were awful in the first half of Tuesday's defeat by Sheffield United and it feels like if you score first against them, they don't really know what to do.

They have not offered much going forward, so I totally understand why their fans are frustrated, but I do have some sympathy for Newcastle boss Steve Bruce.

When Bruce got the job in July 2019, his remit was to keep Newcastle in the Premier League. That hasn't changed, so you have to look at how he is doing from that perspective.

    Prediction: 2-0

Don't like to start off the evening on a negative note but that has to be the worst midfield Newcastle have ever selected. Fill your boots Arsenal.

    Arsenal v Newcastle (20:00 GMT)

Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored in each of his past three appearances against Newcastle.

Newcastle have lost eight successive league games away to the Gunners since a 1-0 victory in November 2010.

Arsenal have won 14 of the past 15 Premier League meetings, losing the other 2-1 away in April 2018.

And Newcastle boss Steve Bruce is winless in his 17 away matches as a manager against Arsenal in all competitions (D4, L13).

I can see how this is going to go. Newcastle get stuffed and Bruce will say "see this is why I don't play attacking lineups!" What he doesn't get is we don't mind being defensive against strong teams. We don't expect to be defensive against Sheffield or Fulham! That's why Rafa was liked and Bruce hasn't cracked it. We used to beat those around us. Now we try to draw.

I watched Newcastle against Brentford in the Carabao Cup and it just wasn't right. The fans are frustrated at Steve Bruce's negative tactics, so he's got to be a little bit more pragmatic.

He's changed the shape tonight, he's tried to get as many attacking players on the pitch as possible and he has to do something different, because if you keep doing the same thing, you keep getting the same outcome.

I hope tonight they put in a good performance and start to click. I think if they at least have a go, I don't think the Newcastle fans will have anything to criticise.

CM: You know that "5 magical Ozil moments" video? Can we also have one called, "20 infuriating moments Ozil refused to track back and wandered the length of the pitch doing nothing".

Just pitched this to my editor. He said it didn't sound very engaging in video form. Not very 'younger audiences'.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on Steve Bruce: "When you are sitting in one of these chairs, you suffer and you have a lot of empathy for your colleagues.

"We all know what it takes, how much we suffer and as well, [Bruce] is a top guy, a really good manager.

"You need support from the club, that is for sure, then you need to feel as well what your fans and supporters can see what you are trying to build.

"Then the most important part for me is the feeling you have with the players. When you feel that the players are on board and they are really trying for you, that they are behind you, that gives you a big energy.

"Probably when you feel that the players are lost and not behind you, that is difficult."

Marc Richards: Steve Bruce said the gloves were off and that he was doing it his way. Shouldn't it have been HIS way from the start? It would come as a great surprise if we see him doing anything different and he should probably walk before he's let go.

It's taken Steve Bruce until 18th January, 17 games in and many dire results and matches, to actually look like he's having a go?

  18. 'Criticism has been personal from day one'published at 19:13 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2021

    Arsenal v Newcastle (20:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce says criticism of him has been "personal from day one" but he "won’t give in".

Fans have called for his resignation after defeat by the Premier League’s bottom club Sheffield United, meaning the Magpies are winless in eight games.

Bruce, 60, said the first half was "absolutely hopeless" and admitted: "I picked the wrong team" after choosing a defensive line-up against the Blades.

"I’ve made a career of never giving in so I won’t [now]," said Bruce. I will keep trying to do my utmost to make this better.

"[The criticism] has been personal from day one - certain people out there think I shouldn't have been in the job to start with. All I can do is accept it and try not to be too down with it."

  20. Arsenal sink Newcastle in FA Cuppublished at 19:09 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2021

    Arsenal v Newcastle (20:00 GMT)

These two sides met recently in the third round of the FA Cup and Arsenal needed extra-time goals from Emile Smith Rowe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to send them through.

In-form Smith Rowe had an eventful evening after arriving as a second-half substitute, seeing a red card rightly rescinded before opening the scoring.

Aubameyang tapped in the second after a slick move cut Newcastle open.

Andy Carroll missed two golden chances in normal time, which could have sent Arsenal to a rare third-round exit.
