    Liverpool 0-0 Burnley

Seconds after the whistle blows it all kicks off on the pitch. Ashley Barnes is in the thick of it.

  2. Postpublished at 45+1 mins

    Liverpool 0-0 Burnley

Alexander-Arnold's radar is not on yet. A free-kick is teed up for him on the edge of the box but his shot is wild and wide and high.

That'll be the last chance of the half.

Divock Origi did everything right until...

I'm not sure he really had to smash it so hard, you could see by the way he opened his body exactly what he was going to do but I think it just needed placing.

The execution of the shot let him down.

  4. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 45 mins

    Liverpool 0-0 Burnley

Oh, Divock. What a waste. He is gifted a clear run on goal by a big gaffe in possession from Ben Mee. The Belgian charges on, into the box, draws Pope out and beats him with his shot but then watches in horror as it smashes against the underside of the bar and bounces away.

That was the big chance the home side have been waiting for.

Liverpool desperate. Shots from outside the box with Pope in goal? I wish them luck.

Too many Liverpool players gone off the boil at the same time. Mane used to be their best player.

    Liverpool 0-0 Burnley

Liverpool are turning the screw. A period of possession around the Burnley box ends with Alexander-Arnold seeing a shot deflected over. The resulting corner comes to nothing, but Liverpool are quickly back on the attack. Until Mane drifts offside that is.

Defensively Burnley have done really well. The shots that Liverpool have had on target have all come from outside the 18-yard box. Decent strikes but easy saves for Nick Pope. You could argue that Burnley's chance was the best chance of the game so far.

A stinging effort. Andy Robertson receives the ball at an angle in the box and belts an effort that Pope can only palm away.

With the attack ended, the referee goes back to book Ashley Barnes for a late challenge on Thiago in the build-up.

Another long-range shot from Liverpool (this time from Alexander-Arnold) flies harmlessly over. Jurgen Klopp isn't happy and screams instructions from the touchline.

The Liverpool full-backs aren't providing as much for the forwards because teams have worked out how to play against them. Also, the service from midfield without Fabinho and Henderson in there isn't quite the same.

Paul Walmsley: Liverpool right now sort of remind me of England at a major tournament. Full of class players but somehow just don't play very well.

Kev: Liverpool losing VVD wasn’t the big problem....losing Jota was!

You know what threat Burnley pose. Dealing with it remains a test, though. The Clarets swing a free-kick into the Liverpool box that is headed half away but only to Robbie Brady you hits a soft low effort that is easy for Alisson to save.#

I'm not gonna lie. This ain't great.

Tony: If the teams swapped shirts I'm not so sure you could tell the difference between Liverpool and Burnley.

Ben Rogers: Not sure what’s going on at Liverpool - gone from heavy metal football to Michael Bublé

Thiago played a lovely little ball up to Divock Origi earlier on but he was just stood there on his heels.

Because he doesn't play regularly, that's one of the problems that Origi has. It's not so much the fitness, it's the touch and that game time.

Origi has another effort, similar to the first, at the end of a Liverpool break. Mane sets him up and he strikes fiercely, but again Pope is bang behind it to save.

That's the first thing Origi has done in the game and it does show you that he has got a real burst of pace.

    Liverpool 0-0 Burnley

Divock Origi tries to make something happen on his own with a driving run to within 20 yards and a low shot that Pope dives to his left to save. And so concludes an opening half hour that Burnley will be very happy with.

Great defending from Ben Mee. It was all about just being in that position, almost like you're in your armchair, waiting for the ball to come in and he basically sticks his left foot out and clears the danger. He is just so consistent for Burnley.

  20. Postpublished at 25 mins

    Liverpool 0-0 Burnley

Ben Mee does brilliantly for Burnley to cut out an Alexander-Arnold cross and prevent Origi getting a sight of goal.

Chris Wood is a solid out ball for Burnley. He drives into space to collect a launched pass from Tarkowski and then sets up Dwight McNeil for a dart to the byline and cross that draws Ashley Barnes into a foul on Fabinho.

So much has to go right for the Clarets in this game for them to get something, but they've shown already they have to potential to hurt the home side.
