I think the league is going to be this tight right until the end. If you look at every single team that we think has a chance of winning it, through the course of the season, they have all had some very strange results.

Amar Ali: Can someone remind Liverpool that they need to get shots on target to score goals.

Nilesh Patel: Are linesman even needed in the Prem anymore? Surely there's some sort of sensory technology that can be put into the pitches, that go off, if someone's offside.

And another hit at goal from range as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has a pop. It's a decent effort but Pope is right behind it.

Liverpool have to win tonight. Never mind selection or players dropped, we have to win.

And there was almost that moment of true quality. Xherdan Shaqiri is fed the ball 20 yards from goal for a strike that has Nick Pope diving but extremely glad to see it fly just over the bar.

Burnley are having a lot of possession - and I hope I'm not saying that as a surprise. It's been good, they have been passing it around extremely well. It's just from both teams, a lack of clear cut chances.

It is going to take some quick, quality moving of the ball for Liverpool to open up this Burnley defence. The visitors' box is absolutely awash with players in yellow shirts when the Reds come forward.

Andrew Mitchell: I get holding off on flagging when the decision is borderline, but when there’s clear daylight why do they persist with this policy? It’s going to take someone suffering a serious injury in a needless passage of play for them to change it, isn’t it?

It was a very brave save from Alisson. Straight away he looked at the linesman and thought it was a foul on him but I don't think it was. Chris Wood didn't do anything wrong.

Been a fairly even first 15 minutes so far. Burnley are looking mainly to contain, but they've already had a few moments going forward.

Liverpool's passing is very, very good coming out from the back with Fabinho and Joel Matip but they just can't create that opportunity as yet.

Almost a costly error from Alisson. He comes out to claim a cross but fails to grasp it above Chris Wood. The ball drops to Barnes, but his shot towards goal is blocked by a defender. Liverpool's keeper breathes a sigh of relief.

This is the thing with the new offside protocol of not raising a flag until the move has played out - instinctively you think something is off but then have to watch a good 20 seconds run before suspicions are confirmed.

Barnes is clearly off, but we have to watch him check back and then fire a low shot that Alisson saves before the assistant does his bit.

Good start from both teams so far. Burnley as you would expect and Liverpool trying to get the ball down.

Liverpool seemed to be getting a lot of space down Burnley's left flank, which is probably something they are going to exploit.

A second Liverpool corner causes more chaos in the box than the first. Sadio Mane's header is blocked before a second nodded effort from Fabinho is tipped behind by Nick Pope.

Burnley deal with the subsequent set-piece much more efficiently, but they're getting a few warning shots across the bow.

Divock Origi hasn't scored a league goal since the last game of last season. He is given a chance to shoot from way out, which he shouldn't take but does. The end result is a ball that the stewards have to fish out of the back of the stand behind the goal. Can't fault his optimism.

Fabinho should've done better with that. It was a good cross but it seemed like he tried to flick it - but it needed more purchase on it to get towards the goal.

First corner goes to the home side. It is taken short and then worked to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. His cross is cleared but the ball is whipped back in for Fabinho to nod wide.

First test passed for the Clarets. More to follow.

An early taste of what the Reds defence can expect? Burnley start with a launched ball forward towards Chris Wood that the striker fails to get near. The ball slips out for a goal kick.
