Jamie Carragher and Roy Keane in the Sky Sports studio both think Southampton should have had a penalty for the Matty Cash handball.

The reasoning given for it not being a penalty was because it deflected from Cash's leg to his arm.

Matt: Always felt like Villa had that goal coming, Great assist from Grealish and it's good to see Barkley continue his resurgance. Watkins should have put away that chance to double the lead though.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaking to BBC Sport: "It was good entertainment, both sides wanted to win. They had good moments in the first half and we had the majority of our good moments in the second half. Overall it's a fair result.

"We had a big performance from all the players. We missed key players and the players that played stood up and took their chance. You have to be clinical when you have the chance against big teams.

"We have to hit more shots on target, more often. We are working on it but the team looked really solid and we improved as the game went on. We put pressure on ourselves the way we gave the ball away but second half we looked a lot better.

"We have so much to catch up [in the table] because of the run we had in the last few months. There is a lot of work to do but I like the direction the team is going in."

Jack Grealish has been directly involved in more Premier League goals this season (15 - six goals, nine assists) than he was last season (six goals, eight assists).

Only Harry Kane (11) and Kevin de Bruyne (10) have more Premier League assists than Grealish this season.

That was Ross Barkley's first headed Premier League goal since December 2016 against Hull.

Aston Villa almost double their lead moments later. Ross Barkley finds Ollie Watkins, who has a shot blocked and then gets the ball back before forcing a save from Alex McCarthy from a tight angle.

Aston Villa go close to taking the lead with their first shot in half an hour.

The move starts as Jack Grealish receives a throw-in near the byeline and it ends with Ollie Watkins shooting. He takes an excellent first touch to free a bit of space and then hits a low shot which Alex McCarthy does well to save.

Stuart Armstrong is having a lively game for Southampton. This time he pulls one back to Oriol Romeu, who blasts one 90 yards over the bar.

Chance for Southampton as Stuart Armstrong pulls it back to Ryan Bertrand on the edge of the box. Bertrand hits a low first-time shot from 20 yards but it's a metre or two wide.
