Aston Villa defender Matty Cash, speaking to Sky Sports: "This is a tough place to come but I felt we defended really well. A welcome three points. We had a lot of great characters everywhere.

"We watched them in the week, they are a fantastic team and move the ball really well but this season we have been fantastic defensively so to come here and take a clean sheet is fantastic.

"Luck was on our side. A fantastic result, we can build on it."

On the VAR decision not to award Southampton a penalty for handball: "It is hard to defend with your hands behind your back -sprinting around at full pace. I think it hit my quad first, the rules are a bit bad at the moment."

Aston Villa have beaten Southampton in the Premier League for the first time since December 2013 (3-2 at St Mary’s under Paul Lambert), ending a run of eight.

Aston Villa matchwinner Ross Barkley told Sky Sports: "We definitely needed that result. We put a shift in. [It was a] disappointing result in the week, we knew what we needed to do.

"They’re a great side, they put the pressure on you at the end. Defensively we were solid, we were much improved."

[On scoring his third Aston Villa goal]: "Jack [Grealish] has got the quality to deliver, arriving in the box you’ll get the goals. It was a great ball, I just guided it in."

[On the late VAR decision]: "It was a relief, we did deserve it. [VAR decisions] go either way. Thankfully it went our way this time.

"It’s a great platform, we can still improve. We’ve got loads more games, we’re focussing on the positives."

Two decisions went against Southampton in that game. They were denied a penalty and a late equaliser.

You can blame VAR but neither one was given by the referee in the first place so it wasn't a case of the VAR team overturning a decision.

That's it. It's all over. Aston Villa move up to eighth, while Southampton remain in the bottom half.
