  1. 'There is no time to relax'published at 21:11 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2021

FT: Sheffield United 2-1 West Brom

    West Bromwich Albion

West Brom boss Sam Allardyce speaking to MOTD: "It's an emotional game isn't it? You have to see times out. I thought we were looking good from that point of view. We could have avoided both goals so we ended up losing a game.

"When it came to chances - particularly that chance to Callum Robinson - it's a wonderful save from the goalkeeper. That would have killed Sheffield United. This is a tough league. It punishes you and the players who are here are finding out how tough it is.

"There is no time to relax. You can't not do your job correctly, particularly when you are defending. Overall, our defending today was very, very good. Those two moments could have been avoided and it's cost us two goals.

"You have to be able to cope with the pressure then you need to see that out. We didn't score ours and they scored theirs. That was the difference between the two teams.

"It leaves us with a great gap to fill. It's simple maths. We know how many points it takes to stay in this league. What other people do and what other clubs do, we can't affect that. We have to focus on getting 38 points. We have two more quality players coming in. Hopefully that will lift these boys, help them play better and hopefully they can have massive contributions going forward."

  2. 'I'm sick of repeating myself'published at 21:09 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2021

FT: Sheffield United 2-1 West Brom

    West Bromwich Albion

West Brom manager Sam Allardyce: "Obviously it's disappointing for us but it's not unusual as we've been in these positions. I'm sick of repeating myself. Until we learn at this level to stop goals - scruffy goals that could have been avoided - it's an uphill battle.

"If they score a great goal then you can accept that but they were ones that could have been avoided. The big turning point was the big save from their goalkeeper off Callum Robinson. That was a wonder save and it would have been 2-1 for us.

"What happens in our defensive area is avoidable. We can't seem to clear it. We should have gone 2-1 up but we then gave it away. I would have been happy with a point in the end. I was comfortable with the first half performance with how we played but then when the second goal didn't go in for us and they put us under pressure and took advantage of it. We couldn't get anything back from then. We have to rely on not just these players but the new players we have in this window. We need to get better all round. If we can, we can get more results.

"It leaves us in the bottom two but the distance between the others could get greater. The bottom line is we need to get 38 points. That means we have a lot of points to gain in our last 17 games. That will mean we must start winning again. We must stop conceding goals as that's the only way we can start winning games."

Southampton are seriously depleted anyway and have struggled to get a team out.

There’s nothing they can do. They are working hard and trying hard but this could be anything.

Andrew Mitchell: It’s a little mercy for Southampton, but isn’t on the line considered inside the box? And from the replay, Cavani’s foot is clearly on the line when the contact occurs

OK, you can stop now United. No need to break records tonight.

Are we heading for brackets here?

Southampton fans won't need reminding of this.

They were 5-0 down at half-time when they suffered that record 9-0 Premier League mauling by Leicester.

It is not quite as bad this evening thanks to that overturned penalty decision but they need to show more defensive fortitude after half-time as not much was in evidence in that 45 minutes.

Edinson Cavani missed one two minutes ago, but does get on the scoresheet this time, the Uruguayan with a free header from eight yards out, planting into the bottom corner from Luke Shaw's cross.

This is getting U.G.L.Y for the Saints.

Marcus Rashford's cross has made the goal.

Unfortunately for Southampton, Bednarek is facing his own goal and he makes a decision, a split second one, 'do I dare leave it or do I try and deflect it past the post?'

He made the decision to try to deflect it and it went straight into his own net.

If you're Ralph Hasenhuttl you are looking at your players now and thinking 'show me your character'.
