    Newcastle 1-2 Crystal Palace

Ooof, delightful free-kick from Miguel Almiron, curled over the wall but it flicks the top of the crossbar.

It looks like it took a nick off the wall so the hosts get a corner and an unmarked Fabian Schar heads wide from six yards out.

Steve Bruce was ready to celebrate.

    Oh deary me.

This is turning into a long, old night for Southampton.

Marcus Rashford whips a cross into the six yard box, Fred is waiting to finish but defender Jan Bednarek sticks a boot out to convert into his own net.

Not much more he could have done really.

You've got to have sympathy for a manager spending days planning and prepping players prior to a game, only to see it go up in smoke after three minutes.

    Kev, Cheltenham

Good chance for United to get some goals here to help with the goal difference. Red card was unfortunate for Southampton but that's football

  6. CLOSE!published at 20:48 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2021

    Man Utd 2-0 Southampton

Bruno Fernandes is in a slump, five Premier League games without a goal or assist before tonight.

The Portuguese tries to put that right but a curler from the edge of the area is pushed to safety by Alex McCarthy.

    Happened in slow motion, that.

  7. Jankewisz's miserable nightpublished at 20:47 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2021

    Simon Stone

There was some speculation Alexandre Jankewitz put in a transfer request last week after becoming frustrated at his lack of first-team opportunities at Southampton.

It will be a couple of weeks at least before he gets another chance. The Swiss will be banned for Saturday's trip to Newcastle, plus two meetings with Wolves, the first in the FA Cup at Molineux next Thursday.

    Super game here.

Newcastle close to levelling but little Ryan Fraser's low shot from inside the area is gobbled up by Vicente 'Slim Shady' Guaita.

  11. GREAT SAVE!published at 20:45 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2021

James Ward-Prowse has scored two free-kicks past David de Gea but on this occasion the Spanish goalkeeper is equal to it, getting across to punch over the Southampton man's vicious, curling strike.

Oh dear, you fear for Southampton here.

Generally they’ve been organised and tried to make it difficult for Manchester United.

But with that second goal I’m not actually sure where any of their defenders were.

Chance for Southampton to get back into this as Edinson Cavani fouls Moussa Djenepo on the edge of the box and this is well within James Ward-Prowse territory.

Lead. Doubled. How many will United get tonight?

It comes down the left again, Luke Shaw bursting forward and slipping a pass to Mason Greenwood.

What a turnaround in the North East.

Palace have hit back after going 1-0 behind in the opening minute, Eberechi Eze whips in a corner, Gary Cahill runs on to it to power in a header towards the far post.

A great ball in from Luke Shaw and Wan-Bissaka came in from the right and his finish was excellent, first time across the goalkeeper leaving him no chance.

And you might say that’s the position where the Southampton player who was sent off [Jankewitz] might have been.

    Jairo Riedewald

    GOOD GRIEF!!

An absolute belting strike from Jairo Riedewald draws Palace level at St James' Park.

A corner falls loose around 25 yards out and the stocky Dutchman runs on to it before powering a left-foot shot into the roof of the net.

It went like a rocket, but did take a deflection off Ciaran Clark.
