  2. Pep's Bernardo Silva defencepublished at 11:16 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    BBC Sport

Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva has shown clear signs of returning to the form that helped inspire the Blues to their 2018-19 title.

Bernardo was disappointing last season but City manager Pep Guardiola feels that might have had something to do with the one-match ban he received for an ill-advised social media post, which was meant to be in jest to team-mate Benjamin Mendy that others did not see in the same way.

"It has been a tough period for him, when he was being accused of something he’s not," said Guardiola. "It was so hurtful for him, still I cannot understand it.

"He struggled mentally as he is such a humble guy. I am delighted he’s back, he can do everything. Another top player who always does the service of the team."

    Manchester City

Pep has consistently said City will not be bringing in any new faces during the January transfer window.

Despite a slow start, COVID disruption and injuries to key players, City have managed to reach the summit of the Premier League at the half way point of the season.

The new defensive pairing of Dias and Stones has been both impressive and effective and it has plugged the obvious defensive liabilities. At the same time, Pep has managed to create a system where we have some attacking fluency, and that’s playing without a recognised striker in many games. Ilkay Gundogan, Joao Cancelo, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva have, in my opinion, been the outstanding performers so far this term.

There’s been talk of City taking either Diego Costa on a short term deal or Edin Dzeko making a return to the Etihad to give City more of a killer instinct in front of goal. For me, getting Sergio Aguero fit, available and firing on all cylinders is the best option for now.

In the Summer, there may well be other striker options available and most City fans would love to see another Haaland in a sky blue shirt.

A quiet day in terms of incomings is expected across the Manchester region today. Outgoings wise, Manchester City are likely to see academy lads Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Jayden Braaf leave on loan to Blackburn and Udinese respectively.

In the Football League, Wigan are trying to get a deal to bring in Scott Wootton from Plymouth and Oldham’s Jordan Barnett is set to leave - he’s after more game time.

Glenn Murray leaves Brighton - analysis

    Johnny Cantor
    BBC Sussex commentator

Glenn Murray's move to Nottingham Forest marks the end of an era for the Seagulls striker who has scored over 100 goals in two spells for the club over more than a decade.

The saying ‘never go back’ certainly doesn’t apply to this club legend who has delivered at all levels from league 1 to the Premier League.

Graham Potter and owner Tony Bloom are taking the club in a different direction but most Albion fans will hope he ends his career on a high in the East Midlands.

If anyone is able to bring out the best in him at the tender age of 37 it is the former Seagulls manager Chris Hughton.

Earlier, Nottingham Forest sealed the signing of veteran striker Glenn Murray from Brighton for the rest of the season.

The 37-year-old had been on a season-long loan with Championship side Watford.

Newcastle v Crystal Palace (20:15 GMT)

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport

Ahead of Tuesday's game against Crystal Palace, Newcastle boss Steve Bruce confirmed that skipper Jamaal Lascelles would be missing after suffering a hamstring injury against Everton. The centre-back is having a scan.

Bruce also said that winger Ryan Fraser was a doubt after being sick over the weekend but doesn't think it's coronavirus.

"He couldn't make training yesterday, I don't think its Covid, and it's a blow because he's been stop-start all season," Bruce said. "Let's see how he is today but that's my only worry at the moment."

Schalke's 20-year-old Turkey international central defender Ozan Kabak has been added into the mix as a another potential target for Liverpool.

There is believed to be a few options for Liverpool but they are definitely trying to add another central defender in addition to the £2m signing of Preston North End's Ben Davies.

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce was in a good mood after his side's much-needed win over Everton on Saturday and hinted that there could be a loan signing which has not been speculated on in the media.

The club has been linked with Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury, but Bruce said that might depend on how things develop at Leicester's end.

He added: "It's not necessarily just Hamza Choudhury, you keep saying that, but we have one or two things bubbling along. We will see what develops later on today."

As for links with Paris St-Germain midfielder Idrissa Gueye, Bruce joked: "Neymar was the one we were looking for, but it didn't quite happen."

  18. Yedlin on way to Galatasaraypublished at 10:44 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce has just done his press conference and has confirmed that American full-back DeAndre Yedlin is on his way to Galatasaray on a permanent move.

"Quite simply we have had three right-backs at the club now and DeAndre is suited to wing-back," Bruce said. "It's been no secret that we have made changes to a back four.

"I want to wish him best of luck playing in Turkey for a huge club like Galatasaray. He's a great pro, and a great lad. Sometimes you have to let one out to bring somebody in so it could be a busy day for us."

  19. 'Yedlin leaves with affection of fans'published at 10:41 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

Norm from True Faith Newcastle United Fanzine and Podcast

    Newcastle United

I do not envisage any incoming transfers. The club is being linked with Hamza Choudhury and Idrissa Gueye.

Both good players but if the club are bringing in two players, then DMs are not what is required. A creative CM would be great.

The rumour of Joe Willock coming in seems made up, but I would be delighted with him if it happened.

Celtic's Olivier Ntcham has been linked. DeAndre Yedlin is out-going. The club apparently forgot to get his visa papers sorted. He has been good for us and leaves with, I think, the affection of most fans.
