  1. 'Dele must be devastated'published at 23:12 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    Don Hutchison
Ex-Liverpool midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Dele Alli must be absolutely devastated. He must be watching the window close and thinking 'what happens to me for the next four months?'

I guess it’s a similar scenario to when Callum Hudson-Odoi was linked with Bayern Munich and Chelsea were too afraid to let him go because they probably knew he would go and rip it up.

Tottenham probably feel the same about Dele Alli if they let him go to PSG, he would probably go there and do really well.

For the player he must feel he’s in no man’s land, he must think 'the manager doesn’t want me at Spurs, I’m not getting anywhere near the first team, I’m not even making benches, I’m playing reserve team football, I’ve now got to wait until the end of the season to see if I can force through a move' because I don’t think Jose is going to change his mind.

He called Dele a terrible trainer – the only thing Dele can do is try to change the manager’s opinion – he must be the first one in training, the last one away, he must train hard.

  4. Saints submit deal sheet for Minaminopublished at 23:02 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Southampton have submitted a deal sheet to the Premier League in an attempt to complete a surprise loan move for Liverpool's Japanese international Takumi Minamino before the transfer deadline.

Saints moved for the 26-year-old hours before the transfer window closed and Liverpool have agreed to let Minamino move to St. Mary's until the end of the season.

Minamino has been on the periphery at Anfield this term, although he played and scored in the 7-0 win at Crystal Palace in December.

The deal sheet means Southampton now have until two hours beyond the 11pm deadline to conclude the transfer having filed the necessary paperwork.

Southampton turned to Minamino after being frustrated with other moves. They hoped to sign Arsenal's Ainsley Maitland-Niles but talks broke down and he has joined West Bromwich Albion.

  5. "He's too good to be sat on the bench"published at 23:01 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    Don Hutchison
Ex-Liverpool midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Ainsley Maitland-Niles was unbelievable in Arsenal’s FA Cup run last season – I thought he was arguably man of the match in the final. I thought his performances were brilliant and that he was going to be the next regular for Mikel Arteta.

I’ve no idea what’s gone on behind the scenes, whether he’s a frustrated lad and just wants to get out on loan and play some football or that Mikel Arteta doesn’t trust him in the position he wants to play at Arsenal.

But at some point he’s got to go and play because he’s too good to be sat on the bench and sometimes not even on the bench. He’s going to get games under Sam [Allardyce] in his preferred position and they need him.

I love everything about him. I think he’s got a great engine, a great attitude and he can play a number of positions which is vital.

Just going to put it out there, Michael Edwards (Liverpool's sporting director) is a ridiculous negotiator. Gets two deadline day deals done for a grand total spend of £3million, one being a "try before you buy" loan, all the while knowing full well his club's final senior CB (Matip) has been declared injured for the rest of the season. Outstanding work.

Minamino might be quite a shrewd signing. Likely to be a better goalscoring midfielder than others. But if we're looking at Liverpool, I would have liked to loan Origi, and have Hasenhuttl give him a simple job: stay in the box and poach as many goals as you can.

If Jesse Lingard is the answer, I'm not sure what question David Moyes and West Ham were asking when his loan deal was completed.

Moyes has stated that Lingard could be the answer to our lack of strikers but I'm not sure he has the ability to dominate two centre backs like Michail Antonio can.

There was mention of playing him as a 'false nine' which sent a shiver down my spine. The last time I can remember us playing that system successfully was Spurs away when Ravel Morrison shone for one game only - and look where he is now.

This is a big risk for Jesse. He needs game time to make his case for being part of the England squad this summer and I'm not sure he will be a success. I hope to be proven wrong.

  16. 'Training will be like a first day at school'published at 22:47 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    Don Hutchison
Ex-Liverpool midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

No one is going to expect Ben Davies and Kabak to be the next Virgil van Dijk – they’ve got to be the best version of themselves to complement Van Dijk and Joe Gomez when they are back fit.

That’s going to be the task for Ben Davies – going into Liverpool, training with all these Galactico players and in the first couple of days it’s going to be extremely hard for him.

The players will make him welcome but he will be a little bit nervous – I always liken it to the first day at school, it doesn’t matter where you are, or how old you are, the first day at school is always a nightmare and it’s exactly the same for professional footballers.

  18. "It will be a whirlwind for Ben Davies"published at 22:42 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    Don Hutchison
Ex-Liverpool midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

It will be an absolute whirlwind for Ben Davies and it’s going to be a test of mentality because he has to have the confidence to go into Liverpool and to try to own it. It’s very hard.

I’ve been there myself. I went there when I was 18, 19. You walk in, I came from Hartlepool and all of a sudden you’ve got people like John Barnes, Steve McMahon, Ronnie Whelan, Jan Molby, Ian Rush, Peter Beardsley, Alan Hansen, all legends at the football club and it is daunting.

It takes you a long time. I remember John Barnes sitting me down after about 10 days, myself and Jamie Redknapp, and he said ‘you boys are the future of this club, we will all be finished in two or three years’ time. You’re here for a reason, Kenny (Dalglish) signed you for a reason’.

That’s what Jurgen Klopp has to do, he has to make sure he speaks to Ben Davies, that he tells him that he’s not just signed him to make up the numbers, that he’s going to have push Nat Phillips for a starting place.

  19. A lot on King's mind?published at 22:35 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

A Norwegian contact I was texting earlier today was saying that with a new manager for the national team he thinks whoever Josh King decides to join, it’s vital he plays matches on a regular basis to keep his place in the Norway XI.

So the question is would he be more of a backup at Everton? My contact suspects this is possibly on his mind.

One Norwegian paper said that the deal for Southampton didn’t go through because of his personal terms, it could be because he’s thinking forward to the summer.
