  1. Europe or 12th?published at 21:41 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

It's been really disappointing to see us sell Sebastien Haller to Ajax this month for a huge loss and not recruit another striker who could compete or be a back up to Michail Antonio.

Antonio is always one sprint away from pulling a hamstring and being ruled out for six weeks.

It wasn't working with Haller because our system didn't suit his style of play but we could rue the day we decided to cut our losses whilst keeping everything crossed that Antonio stays fit.

This move could be the difference between us being able to secure a European berth or finishing the season in12th. I can see us finishing the season by having to play a 'false nine' for weeks.

I think it's high time that football came up with another word to differentiate between loan and 'permanent' signings. No player in history has ever signed for a club permanently, so I'd be obliged if we could finally nail this issue tonight.

    Conor, Belfast

You have to feel sorry for all those agents tonight!

    Mike, Bolton

I think I agree with Conor. Less so with Mike...

But not that one. Shame I could have sneaked him into our offspring XI from earlier.

  12. Southampton move for Minaminopublished at 21:28 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Southampton have asked Liverpool about the possibility of a loan deal for Japan international forward Takumi Minamino.

Saints' move for the 26-year-old, who signed for Liverpool from RB Salzburg in a £7.25m deal in December 2019 and made his debut the following month, comes after the Saints failed in an attempt to sign Arsenal's Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

He has only made occasional appearances for Liverpool this season although he was on target in the 7-0 win at Crystal Palace in December.

Talks are in the early stages and there is no indication as yet as to whether Liverpool will be prepared to do the deal - but Saints are hopeful.

    • Nathaniel Chalobah to Leicester

  15. Preston fans react to Davies' departurepublished at 21:15 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

#bbcfootball or text us on 81111 (UK only)

PR4PNE: Great short term option, quick, reads the game well and got a brilliant passing range, you’ll love him.

James Shuttleworth: Ben is a calm and measured centre-half. Tidy on the ball, rarely at fault for conceding goals. Not the tallest but generally makes up for it quite well. He'll be a decent backup.

  16. 'Ripped to bits but responded well'published at 21:15 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    Simon Grayson
Former Preston manager on BBC Radio 5 live

In his early days at Preston Ben Davies played at left-back which gave him the opportunity to learn how to defend better.

Some of his early days he got ripped to bits by some of the right wingers but he certainly responded well and moving inside, when he got physically stronger and understood the position, it’s given him this opportunity to go to the reigning Premier League champions.

It’s a dream move for him and I’m sure he’s going to relish this opportunity and it shows other players that anything is capable of happening if you knuckle down, work hard and try to fulfill your potential.

  17. Barrow burning the midnight oilpublished at 21:14 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

It's not just at the higher end of the English pyramid that clubs are recruiting players.

They are still doing so in League Two as well.

Barrow only returned to the Football League in September after a 50-year absence but they are dangerously close to going back down.

There will be no relegation if the National League votes to end its season - the resolutions went out this evening - but the Cumbrians are not taking any chances and are still on the hunt for a forward as the deadline gets close.

  19. Lowest spend in over a decadepublished at 21:07 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

There will be no surprises that we we are heading for one of the lowest-spending winter transfer windows in the Premier League.

According to Carteret Analytics, £68m has been spent so far in this window on permanent deals, that's the lowest since £35m was spent in 2010.

The record spend in a winter window came in the 2017-18 season, when £497m was spent on transfer fees involving permanent moves.

  20. 'Davies suited to a top-six club'published at 21:03 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    Simon Grayson
Fleetwood manager on BBC Radio 5 live

Ben Davies has a lovely range of passing and has developed the physical side a lot better over the last few years.

He’s got stronger, very comfortable on the ball, can see a pass.

When you are going to a top-six club, you have a lot more possession of the ball and don't have to defend your box as much, and I think that is more suited to Ben.

If he was down at the bottom end of the Premier League and you’re defending all the time, you get asked more questions of you and I think he’s more suited to a top-six team because of the way he plays and the way they play.
