  1. Maitland-Niles decision loomingpublished at 08:20 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Arsenal defender Ainsley Maitland-Niles is one of the more interesting deals that might go through today.

On Thursday, West Brom were pushing strongly for the England defender, then Southampton came into the picture and now Leicester have made an inquiry.

Wolves wanted to sign him in October, so given the dearth of decent defenders, Maitland-Niles is a man in demand.

  3. Celtic hope to sign Everton's Kennypublished at 08:15 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    Phil McNulty

Celtic are hoping to complete a loan deal for Everton defender Jonjoe Kenny before the close of the transfer window at midnight.

Kenny, who has been a peripheral figure at Everton since returning from a loan spell at Schalke in the Bundesliga, has also been linked with Burnley.

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti has preferred veteran captain Seamus Coleman and Mason Holgate ahead of Kenny in his accustomed right-flank role this season. Now he could revive his career with a loan deal at Celtic.

  5. A quiet transfer windowpublished at 08:09 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

Only eight of the 20 Premier League clubs have signed anybody this month - and the majority have been loan deals.

Morgan Sanson (Marseille to Aston Villa) and Robert Snodgrass (West Ham to West Brom) are the only first-team players to move permanently and cost transfer fees (excluding deals arranged earlier in the season).

  6. Yedlin to Galatasaray?published at 08:05 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    Rob Schofield
    BBC World Service

Galatasaray have confirmed "official negotiations" with Benfica over the loan signing of Spurs midfielder Gedson Fernandes and a permanent move for Newcastle right back, DeAndre Yedlin.

  9. Who will be the 2021 Ighalo?published at 07:58 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

Will we see another 'panic signing' today like we did last year when Manchester United signed Odion Ighalo?

United needed cover for the injured Marcus Rashford and so signed Ighalo, who was still in China, on loan until the end of the season (later extended to January).

He ended up scoring five times for the club - all in cup games.

They had also tried to sign Bournemouth's Joshua King that day.

  11. What happened last January?published at 07:53 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

West Ham's late capture of Hull City forward Jarrod Bowen for an initial £18m on 31 January 2020 was the only big-money move of the lowest-spending deadline day since 2010.

Odion Ighalo's move from Shanghai Shenhua to Manchester United dominated headlines, but was a loan deal - like five of the 11 top-flight signings.

The second biggest transfer was Brighton signing Chelsea defender Tariq Lamptey - who was little known at the time - for a reported £4.5m.

Arsenal signed Southampton right-back Cedric Soares on loan.

Aston Villa signed Borja Baston, Leicester brought in Ryan Bennett and Sheffield United signed Richairo Zivkovic and Panagiotis Retsos.

Norwich and Wolves both signed EFL players who went back to their old clubs on loan.

  13. Why have there been so few deals?published at 07:49 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

The combination of the coronavirus pandemic and Brexit means transfer deals have never been so difficult to complete.

A points-based system has been introduced for players from the EU, taking into consideration their experience and the level they have played at.

Travel restrictions imposed as part of the national lockdown have forced clubs into a different approach.

QPR director of football Les Ferdinand said: "You can't get out and watch any players.

"Brexit has taken a lot of countries off the radar for us, but we wouldn't have been doing a lot of deals anyway. We are not 100% sure of what the rules are."

  14. Will it be busy today?published at 07:45 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

Will the current economic pressures on football clubs - and the rest of us - have an effect?

Probably, based on the amount of loan signings we have seen so far this month.

There were only 12 deadline-day Premier League signings on the 'summer' deadline day in October.

Pre-Covid, Premier League clubs spent £230m in January last year, the second highest total ever, but only £25m of that was spent on deadline day.

West Ham's late capture of Hull City forward Jarrod Bowen for an initial £18m accounted for most of that, with Brighton paying £4.5m for Chelsea's Tariq Lamptey.

  15. 'I am not sure Davies will play very much'published at 07:41 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    Mark Lawrenson
    Former Preston and Liverpool defender

Ben Davies has done well at Preston and has let his contract run down so he was going to move on in the summer. If he'd gone to Celtic, which I'd heard had been agreed, then I was thinking he could do well there, but being honest I didn't really see him as being good enough to be on Liverpool's radar.

He's a real steady Eddie. He's left-footed and quick enough but he's not got phenomenal pace or anything like that.

Up against the extra nous and quality you get in the Premier League, on top of extra pace, it will be a test for him. You wouldn't want to just throw him in to face Manchester City next Sunday, put it that way.

I am not sure he will play very much at Liverpool, but the experience alone should be fabulous. I hope he experiences playing in the first team, but even if he is just sitting on the bench then it is still great for him.

  18. Davies 'calm and composed'published at 07:32 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    Andy Bayes
    Reporter, BBC Radio Lancashire

Ben Davies has been one of the outstanding championship defenders since he was given a chance by Alex Neil in 2017 after a successful loan spell with Fleetwood Town. He learned his trade with five different clubs on loan in Leagues One, Two and the National League.

His main skill set is he's calm in possession, composed with the ball at his feet or equally happy to win the ball in the air.

He's quick across the ground and has a terrific left foot.

  19. Liverpool set for shock Davies signingpublished at 07:25 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    Liverpool

Liverpool are in talks to sign Preston's Ben Davies for £2m as they look to find a solution for their central defensive crisis.

Jurgen Klopp named his 12th different centre-half partnership in 21 Premier League games at West Ham with Jordan Henderson alongside Nathaniel Phillips.

Joel Matip has joined Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez on the injury list.

Davies, 25, has made 19 appearances for Preston this season.

Liverpool's 19-year-old Dutch defender Sepp van den Berg is expected to join Preston on loan as part of the deal.

  20. Will Liverpool sign a defender?published at 07:20 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    Liverpool

"Look, I don't know. But we will try," said Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on Friday about the prospect of signing a new centre-back.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are long-term absentees, while Joel Matip and Fabinho also have injuries.

"If you have a centre-half available at a reasonable price, and one with the quality we need, then send me a message," Klopp told BT Sport.
