CTxCB: I'm surprised that the "Nottingham Forest-related Offspring XI" doesn't have Pierre van Hooijdonk's son, Sydney van Hooijdonk, who is a striker for NAC Breda.

Mark Bruce: If West Brom need a partner for Okay, there is always Adrian Corral of Atletico Madrid. Would be good for any shootout.

Ryan Woodward: About the Matt Smith thing. I believe the striker Matt Smith who currently plays for Millwall, his full name is 'Mathieu', the French spelling, rather than the usual English 'Matthew'. So that's something unique at least.

Tweet of the day goes to Mark IMO...

  3. How Kabak & Davies comparepublished at 18:40 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

    Liverpool targeting centre-back pair

Investment firm Carteret have been comparing their performance analysis of Liverpool’s incoming defenders...

Ozan Kabak, at 20 years old, looks an interesting option - with his defensive success levels second only to Virgil van Dijk. However, Kabak has had disciplinary issues and his objective performance levels are below Joel Matip on every measure except defensive success rates.

Kabak also provides a better option than Ben Davies - all of Kabak’s objective attributes (except discipline) are more successful than Davies’, and being five years younger, looks more than just a ‘stop gap’ option.

With only a few hours to go in the transfer window, the total transfer fee spending in the Premier League is down 64% compared to the January 2020 transfer window.

The research, conducted by the Carteret Group, shows it is not just England where that's happening.

Spending in Spain's La Liga window is down by 88%, it has dropped off 76% in Germany's Bundesliga, 71% in France's Ligue 1 and 63% in Italy's Serie A.

Also, total transfer fee spending in the Premier League in January 2018 was £496.7m. In January 2021 this has dropped to £67.6m – a drop of 86% in three years.

One of the bigger signings of the day is Brighton bringing in Moises Caicedo from Ecuadorian top-flight side Independiente del Valle.

The word on the street is they've paid £4m for him. About the same as a mid-terrace in the Lanes.

  11. 'Okay wears his heart on his sleeve'published at 18:10 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

West Brom sporting and technical director Luke Dowling: “It has been a priority since the start of the January window to build on the quality we already have in the building and, in Okay, we have a proven international midfielder who we believe can help us in our battle to remain in the Premier League.

“As was the case with Mbaye Diagne and Robert Snodgrass, it is important the players joining us understand the situation in which we find ourselves, and are prepared to fight to help us achieve our goal. It is testament to Okay that he has also made the decision to commit himself to that challenge.

“Okay is a battling midfielder who wears his heart on his sleeve. We look forward to him joining up with his team-mates later this week as they prepare to face Tottenham on Sunday.”

Ed: Lots of jokes about Okay Yokuslu's name. "Okay" is pronounced more like "Och Aye", so he should really be signing for a Scottish club.

Big Sam now needs to contact Atleti to see if Koke is available. Also, what do we call him if Okay turns out to be rubbish?

Serie A strugglers Parma have signed Bayern Munich's highly rated Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee on loan.

Everton had been strongly linked with the 19-year-old.

Zirkzee has scored four Bundesliga goals in only 384 minutes of action for Bayern.

  15. 'A good signing for Liverpool'published at 18:02 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

Former Bolton striker Kevin Davies played with potential new Liverpool defender Ben Davies at Preston.

He gave BBC World Service his thoughts: "He's a good age now. I think he's really developed through going out on loan and playing games at a lower level as part of his education.

"He's gone back to Preston the last couple of years and really made that centre back spot his own.

"So, he's got all the right attributes - he's a good lad, he's quite quiet - I remember him being quite young when I went there five or six years ago, but he's developed into a man now and he's a really good player so he's a good signing for Liverpool."

  16. The view from Spurs on Parrott...published at 17:58 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

Nathan A Clark, The Extra Inch, Spurs Podcast

    Tottenham Hotspur

Carlos Vinicius, brought in on loan to take some of the minutes off of Kane's load, can't even get a league start when Harry Kane is out injured.

So what better way to solve Tottenham's long-held striker depth issue than by promoting a talented young player who is much more likely to be happy getting the small share of those minutes and taking his chance when it comes?

This plan only comes to fruition though if Troy Parrott has a run of form and some senior goals to his name, and that just isn't happening for him at Millwall this season. It is smart from Spurs to switch it up this window and send him elsewhere.

Sugarman Sam: Back again - can we keep these fantastic BBC Deadline Day commentators for everything? They could read the paper to me and I’d laugh!

Says everything about Liverpool's much lauded young home-grown players that they are bringing in not one but two centre backs. Panic or good sense? Whatever happens I'm sure they will receive a warm welcome from Phillips & Co.

  20. New signing Caicedo unlikely to be loaned out - Potterpublished at 17:43 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2021

A bit more from Brighton on their new signing Moises Caicedo.

There had been reports 19-year-old Ecuador international would go out on loan after arriving on the south coast but manager Graham Potter expects him to stay at the Seagulls.

"The plan is he will be us," Potter said at a press conference.

"Always you have to have a look and see what the right thing for his development is, but the plan is for him to stay with us."
