Can someone explain to me why Burnley's goal was "offside"? Have I missed something in the rule book?

You’ve got to help yourselves – Newcastle gave one away with the Shelvey free-kick and then got the red card.

They’ve made things hard for themselves. This will test Newcastle.

  6. SUBSTITUTIONSpublished at 16:20 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2021

    Burnley 1-1 Brighton

Double change in attack for Brighton as they try to regain control. Danny Welbeck and Leandro Trossard are on for Neal Maupay and Aaron Connolly. A new strikeforce. Will it make the difference?

You can see the puddles splashing everytime a player runs towards the ball and makes contact with it.

Ralph Hasenhuttl is absolutely soaked on that touchline.

Tell you what, just had a look at the replay of that Karl Darlow save.

It was actually stunning, a real Peter Schmeichel starfish save to deny Jannik Vestergaard from point-blank range.

Remember Big Pete denying Les Ferdinand on this very ground many years ago.

Harrison Short: Can’t remember the last time I saw a Premier League pitch get this affected by the rain. Sunday league quality incoming in Newcastle.

Andrew Neill: Newcastle fans have been calling for Hendrick to be left out of the starting XI for some time now. Gonna get their wish but not sure this is how they would have wanted it to happen....

The heavy rain is causing problems now because it's sitting on top of the surface and players are not able to get passes off to each other without it getting stuck in the surface.

    And the Saints nearly level.

Jannik Vestergaard meets a deliver at the far post but his header is brilliantly batted out by Karl Darlow.

Much better from the Newcastle goalkeeper on that occasion.

Crucial block by Lewis Dunk as he gets in the way of Ashley Barnes' shot from close range. Barnes then has the ball in the back of the net soon after but the flag is up for offside.

Burnley are in the ascendency at the moment.

  14. CLOSE!published at 16:14 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2021

    Southampton sensing blood.

Karl Darlow fails to deal with a cross into the box and it drops for Danny Ings, but the England international dinks over.

It's stupid. He doesn't even need to pull Takumi Minamino back there. He's not through on goal, there's no reason for him to do what he just did. If they go on to lose the game, Jeff Hendrick needs to take responsibility.

    This game has everything...

James Ward-Prowse has scored four direct free-kick goals in the Premier League this season - only David Beckham (5 in 2000-01) and Laurent Robert (5 in 2001-02) have ever scored more in a single campaign in the competition.

    More trouble for Newcastle!

Jeff Hendrick receives a second yellow card and is sent off.

Referee Craig Pawson initially gives the yellow card to the wrong man before James Ward-Prowse intervenes.

Pawson changes his mind and brandishes a second yellow and red in the direction of the Republic of Ireland international.

It came after Hendrick tugged back Takumi Minamino on the burst forward. Daft.

What a free-kick! You know what Ward-Prowse has got with that right foot of his.

It’s a curling effort over the wall – it keeps curling away from Darlow. That’s all about the training ground and the practice. It was magnificent.
