Joelinton squares it across the face but Shelvey misjudges it. He doesn’t catch it very well and it’s a let-off for Southampton.

  7. 'There's a doggedness and a great team spirit'published at 16:05 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2021

    Aston Villa 1-0 Arsenal

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith, speaking to BT Sport: "I said to them on Wednesday they had gone away from the values of being a good team-mate and the work rate - and we saw that back today.

"We started the game with a very good intensity and that set us up well. We tried to block them in, it was a very good defensive performance but their goalkeeper made a number of good saves.

"The teams were set up man-to-man so you have to win these battles and I'm really pleased with the players, the way they competed all over the pitch and helped their team-mates. We're very good at holding on to leads and there's a doggedness and a great team spirit."

On Ollie Watkins: "He is in double figures which is fantastic for only 21 games but the distance he covers at speed - no centre-half has had a second to relax when he is against them."

On goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez: "That's 11 clean sheets, the most we've had for a long time and he will be happy with the players in front of him but when he is called upon he is good at making saves."

  9. 'Not ruthless enough'published at 16:04 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2021

    FT: Aston Villa 1-0 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta told BT Sport: "It was a really strong performance, we completely dominated the game, dominated every department and should've won the game.

"But when you give a goal to the opponent, give them another three chances and are not ruthless enough in their box you don't win. It has cost us two games in four days as the reality is we should've won both games.

"It's a big blow considering the performances we've had in both games. We have to come back and we've done it before this season and we have to do it again. We have to keep demanding the right things but stop doing the things that are costing us.

"I was really annoyed for a few decisions [from the referee] and one big decision that I will not discuss, but, regardless of those decisions, we have to win the game - it was as simple as that."

You get to a stage where you're starting to think - are you serious about this? You're away from home, gone 2-0 down, you get yourself back in the game - clear your lines! Alex McCarthy is trying to play sweeper, plays his nearest man and the ball doesn't get anywhere near him, then the ball's in the back of your net and it's 3-1. It's madness! Sweeper keeper my foot!

It’s a ridiculous mistake. You can’t take that kind of risk, right on half-time in these conditions. What was Bertrand thinking?

Full credit to Almiron. He pinches the ball and drives towards the penalty area. It’s a great finish into the corner.

    Miguel Almiron

Awful from Southampton at the back, the architects of their own downfall.

Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy tries to get a quick move going but sells team-mate Ryan Bertrand short and Miguel Almiron nips in.

The Paraguayan has two Newcastle men in support but drills a confident, low finish into the back of the net from the edge of the area.

Southampton looked like they could have gone in level, but instead will trail by two at the break.
