Does Martinez have British citizenship yet and has not yet played for Argentina? If no to both, Southgate sign him up! Would definitely solve our keeper problems! Best in the league this season.

  4. 'This league is so punishing'published at 22:17 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2021

    Brighton 0-0 Aston Villa

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Graham Potter tells BBC MOTD: "Frustrating but pleasing because the performance was very good and we did everything but score. We had shots, had attacks and reduced Villa's attacking players. We are disappointed with just the one point.

"Their goalkeeper made some really good saves and has been an important player for them, that is football but the overall performance we had enough shots, attacks and go's at them to score, just not that last little luck you need.

"They have been really good, the team have been taking steps forward and results help that. Our performances over the course of the season have not been that inconsistent but we have results to go with that recently. That is good for us.

"The guys felt they were the better team in the game and the one team that was going to win it. I cannot remember them having any chances or efforts at goal so we were solid defensively.

"I have not thought about it (points tally), I have only thought about the next match and hopefully that level of performance gets you points. This league is so punishing."

  5. 'Bang average'published at 22:12 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2021

    Brighton 0-0 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith talking to BBC MOTD:

"We were bang average, I have not seen us make so man enforced errors. We needed our goalkeeper, he had a good game.

"We showed a little resilience and our keeper played well, but I can't take much more from it. It was a fighting performance."

  6. 'We are disappointed with our performance'published at 22:08 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2021

    Brighton 0-0 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith tells Sky Sports: "Not even bang average, I have never seen us make so many unforced errors in a game, it was sloppy from start to finish but had the resilience to keep the ball out of the net. Brighton were the better team.

"It was disappointing all round and the only thing that comes from it is a clean sheet and the resilience.

"Emiliano Martinez made some good saves when needed and was our best player on the pitch tonight. It shows you need a player like that at times, we have not had many performances like this where we have been second best.

"We were equally as bad here last season and losing 1-0 at half-time. Another point to the tally but we are disappointed with our performance.

"Graham Potter has coached them very well and if you keep giving a team like that the ball they will hurt you.

"It looks like a hamstring injury (for Matty Cash) as he was turning and this cold weather that can happen."

  8. 'We lacked intensity'published at 22:00 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2021

    FT: Brighton 0-0 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings: "Disappointed with the performance. We lacked instensity all night.

"Happy when not at it, we didn't lose. Keeper has made some great saves and the defenders made some great blocks.

"Brighton will be more disappointed than us. Matyinez is brilliant. The confidence he instills in us is brilliant. Very good to play in front of him.

"It was always about continuing to improve on last season. We are getting there, we are not the finished product. We still have a long way to go."

  9. 'We are looking to Europe'published at 21:56 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2021

    Brighton 0-0 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez tells Sky Sports: "Not really (pleased with a point), we came here to win and be in the top seven with two games in hand. We were sloppy in the first half and could not create the chances in the second.

"That is my job and the back four, to keep a clean sheet. It is one of those games where we had to put our bodies on the line but we were really off today.

"It was so cold, I thought I had a good game because I made a save early on and I am delighted to keep everyone out today.

"I just want to repay the trust of the manager, goalkeeper coach and club. I am glad I settled in really quickly but credit to my team-mates who are doing a really good job.

"We are looking to Europe, that is why I am frustrated today. We were not in the game since the first minute and Brighton deserved to win."

That may have been the last big chance of the game.

  19. GREAT SAVE!published at 84 mins

    Brighton 0-0 Aston Villa

Brilliant save from Emiliano Martinez, an instinctive stop from point blank range to deny Danny Welbeck's effort.

The Brighton sub nearly delivered the goods.
