Brighton work another aesthetically-pleasing move, Neal Maupay popping the ball outside the area for Alexis Mac Allister to smack a low shot which the Villa goalkeeper bats away.

Having the biggest chance of the game to open 1-0 and being punished by what I call the modern penalty, the penalty you cannot deny there was a contact but now in modern football every contact is a penalty. Always against us. I am not saying it is not a penalty, I am calling it a penalty of modern football.

"In the second half we could see a very tired team against a fresh team but I saw a team where the players gave me everything. They scared me, they scared me because of the way they were still fighting and running after two hours plus of football. The second half was not fair for the boys.

"The second half was the good things of a team that is together, a team that is united."

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to Sky Sports: "City deserved the win but we didn't hide, we tried to play and compete with them. We didn't come here just to sit back, we tried to manage the ball.

"In the final third they were sharper than us and the penalty changed the feeling. We were still in the game and the second goal after half-time didn't help.

"As a goalkeeper it is about millimetres sometimes, I guessed the right way and there is frustration when you touch the ball and it still goes in. You can see a team full of confidence with City, which is not the case with us.

"We have a Europa League game in midweek, we have a lot of ambition in that competition. Then in the league the situation is complicated, even more complicated tonight but we just need a run of wins to try and get the confidence back individually and collectively. We will not give up."

Manchester City

Manchester City's Rodri, speaking to BBC Sport: "I was sure I wanted to take the penalty, I was a bit angry about what happened the last weeks. I took it and fortunately I scored. I told my teams all the week, they were laughing and say you are not going to shoot and I said I was because I was so angry we had missed penalties. I felt confident.

"They kill us in some details but we fixed these little details. We didn't let them get too much into our box. The team is growing a lot and we are really quite happy for this.

"The dynamic of the team is so good but it is not easy, every single game is so different."

It is eventually played towards the left edge of the box for Leandro Trossard but the Belgium international's rasping strike is superbly tipped over the bar by Emiliano Martinez's acrobatic save.

Villa are a little shaky at the back today and Brighton have found some nice pockets of spaces.

This time the hosts manage to squeeze the ball through to Neal Maupay, but the Brighton man is on the byeline and his shot is blocked at the near post by Emiliano Martinez.

Villa do have a man behind the wall - as all teams do now - but Pascal Gross goes goalkeeper's side and strokes a weak free-kick straight at Emiliano Martinez.
