    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace goalscorer Jean-Philippe Mateta speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I am tired! And I am very happy. Jordan Ayew goes, he runs and I see he will cross, I go at the first post and do my finish.

"I am very happy because I scored and we won, the team is happy so everything is OK for me. My family, the players, everyone told me [how important it was]. I am a striker, I hope I will score, it's my job."

  6. 'Feels like a robbery of our points'published at 22:33 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2021

    Brighton 1-2 Crystal Palace

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton defender Joel Veltman to BBC Sport: "I think the first half was not our best game. Their goal came out of nothing. We deserved three points. It feels like a robbery of our points.

"I heard some numbers [match stats]. Unbelievable. They got away with it.

"The chances, we didn't kill. They had not even one 100% chance and Benteke scored. We have to score more.

"Because of this result we are in the danger zone. We wanted to win. We go again on Saturday against West Brom."

On his goal: "It was a nice one. I'd rather not score and get the three points."

  8. 'It is a painful one'published at 22:26 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2021

    FT: Brighton 1-2 Crystal Palace

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Graham Potter speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It's sore, I'm bitterly disappointed with the result because I thought we were the team pushing all the way, trying to get the winner ourselves.

"We have to respond, accept it and as painful as it is we have to move forward. You are watching the game, watching the team, we are trying to find the solution to score and to get punished at the end is a painful one.

"That's the nature of the league, how punishing it is, we have done a lot but clearly not enough. Whoever it had comes against it would be painful because we were dominant in the game. The boys were doing everything to score, it felt like it was always in their penalty box never mind their half.

"I don't think we played badly, but results-wise we have to be disappointed and respond."

  9. 'Results are borne out by goals you score and goals you don't concede'published at 22:25 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2021

    Brighton 1-2 Crystal Palace

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson to BBC Sport: "It's always great to score in the last minute, especially when we had to soak up a lot of pressure.

"The defending was very good, they threw their bodies on the line. We worked hard to make certain they didn't get many sights at goal. We didn't create as many chances we'd like. The two we created from crosses were goals.

"It was important tonight because we haven't been pleased with our defending recently. We thought we were falling short of our high standards.

"Tonight from the very start we showed we'd make it hard for them to score. The bodies were there, headers were there, blocks were there. We took maximum advantage from the counter attack.

"But we've had games like that ourselves - against Brighton, against Newcastle. It's nice to know the old adage about things evening themselves out, they have tonight.

"We get so hung up on statistics these days. The game is decided by goals. Goals are a question of how well you take your chances and defend theirs.

"Until there are prizes for corners and touches in the box, it's very important we keep in mind that results are borne out by goals you score and goals you don't concede. I get no satisfaction when we lose and we have more corners or touches in their box.

"[The opener was a] very good goal. Both goals were wonderful bursts by Jordan Ayew. Christian has been short of goals, he turns up in the last minute. I'm pleased for both of them. It's good for the future. We will need fighting performances like that. We're not Man City, we can't roll teams over.

"Brighton are a form team. I'm sure they'd say they didn't get the result they deserved."

  10. 'We have to respond now'published at 22:18 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2021

    FT: Brighton 1-2 Crystal Palace

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton boss Graham Potter speaking to Sky Sports: "It is difficult, a very sore one, we did everything but get the points and that's the most important thing so we are very disappointed.

"They were in our box I think twice and scored two, that is the beauty of football but it doesn't feel so beautiful at the moment, it feels painful. It was a one-sided game in terms of pressure but they scored two, so that's life.

"I didn't think we did so much wrong in the first half, the goal is from one action at our half and you have to respond, which we did, pushed and pushed and thought we were going to win the game - players are distraught but it is part of life and football and we have to deal with it because we have a game at the weekend.

"In terms of chances created, what we looked like in the game, I was happy with the performance, we need to do a little bit more and I have to keep working on that. We have been on an unbeaten run, we have to respond now, it's not going to go your way all the time, you have to respond. That's the job."

Don’t feel sorry for BHA fans. We’ve just had a transfer window knowing our weakness is being clinical in front of goal and didn’t do anything to resurrect this issue. We are playing the most clumsy LB the PL has ever seen and didn’t bring in cover in case Solly March was injured

  12. 'We went back to basics'published at 22:11 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2021

    Brighton 1-2 Crystal Palace

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace defender Gary Cahill to Sky Sports: "A lot of hard work and determination [went into the win]. We suffered a lot in the game. Defensively we had to work as a team.

"It's a derby, one for the fans to enjoy. It's a six-pointer. We're delighted to take three points.

"We knew how big this game was. We go level with Brighton or six points ahead and get out of the bottom zone. That was the aim. The last couple of results didn't go our way, we were open.

"We went back to basics today. We suffered a lot without the ball. To win it at the end was satistifing. When a game plays out like it did, all that matters is the result.

"There was some old-school defending out there today."

  14. 'It is a massive result'published at 22:00 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2021

    FT: Brighton 1-2 Crystal Palace

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace matchwinner Christian Benteke speaking to Sky Sports: "It is a massive result. We know we play a derby against a very good side. It wasn't easy, they managed to come back in the game in the second half. We put our life on the pitch, tried to defend as much as we could and I had a chance to score a great goal.

"Today was all about three points, it wasn't easy but we got them. The plan was to be compact, we have been too open and we changed the tactic.

"We have got a lot of good players up front but I know my strengths, my qualities, it was about being ready when the gaffer needs me."

Jack Bedlam: Great goal from Benteke but if I was a BHA fan tonight I'd be as sick as a dog, what an absolute steal from Palace. the most undeserved 3 points of the season

John: As a Crystal Palace fan of 47 years, that's the first time I've felt sorry for Brighton. We have been dire (aside from our defending) and we didn't deserve to take all the points. But tomorrow morning I'll be glad we did.

If Brighton had Edinson Cavani, say, I think they'd be in the top half. They remain four points above the relegation zone.

Palace are now 10 points above the bottom three.

I said there was a goal in it... credit to Crystal Palace, nailed their game plan, it is hard to be defensively solid for 90 minutes, only have two chances and take them both. Those games where you have your backs to the wall and take three points are the most rewarding.

It's all over. Crystal Palace touch the ball twice in Brighton's penalty area and score both. They beat their rivals to move well clear of the relegation zone.

It is an unbelievable strike! Again, Jordan Ayew picks the ball up in his own half and travels with the ball, takes people on, picks out Andros Townsend, who does a little step over, gets to the back stick and there's only Christian Benteke in the area - he keeps his eye on it and volleys into the bottom corner.

The whole of the Palace bench erupted because it is an absolute smash and grab.
