It is good play from Brighton, patient, they are not forcing it. It falls to Joel Veltman and he has all the time in the world, keeper has no chance, brilliant finish. You have to applaud Graham Potter, I said in the first half they were too nice but they have a bit of nastiness now.
Brighton 1-1 Crystal Palace
That's Joel Veltman's first goal for Brighton - his first goal in English football - since a summer move from Ajax.
Joel Veltman
Brighton are deservedly level. The Seagulls work the ball from left to right, Pascal Gross' shot is blocked and lands to Danny Welbeck. Before he can shoot a Palace defender gets a nick on the ball and sends it to Joel Veltman, who hammers it into the bottom corner.
Brighton 0-1 Crystal Palace
Leonardo Trossard crosses for Brighton and Neal Maupay is clattered by a defender. No penalty. Maupay is down for about 20 seconds but eventually gets to his feet.
Brighton 0-1 Crystal Palace
Dan Burn was booked for that foul on Jordan Ayew.
Brighton 0-1 Crystal Palace
It's wave after wave of Brighton pressure at the moment. Dan Burn is basically on the left wing - but he fouls Jordan Ayew and Palace have a chance to regroup.

Much better from Brighton, getting more possession higher up and getting bodies into the box. What Brighton have done is they are playing what we call a box now, so they have two centre backs and two central midfielders who will protect that section of the pitch and everyone else goes higher with width, it enables them to go and roam and know the four will protect the central area of the pitch.
Brighton 0-1 Crystal Palace
Palace captain Luka Milivojevic collapses to the ground and laughs as he's penalised for a slight bit of contact on Joel Veltman. Free-kick.
Brighton 0-1 Crystal Palace
Chance for Danny Welbeck. Dan Burn whips in a brilliant cross after a surging run down the left. His cross is headed up by Gary Cahill and the move ends in Welbeck poking a shot just wide.

They needed to do something different and I think if the ball goes higher Danny Welbeck can make it stick, run in behind and cause a few problems. It also enables Neal Maupay to come a bit deeper.

The second half begins.
Brighton 0-1 Crystal Palace
Brighton make a change at half-time. Steven Alzate, who started at left wing-back, is replaced by Danny Welbeck.
Brighton 0-1 Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace have not lost any of their last 22 Premier League games when leading at half-time (W18 D4), since a 4-3 defeat by Liverpool in January 2019.

It was a brilliant goal, brilliant finish from Jean-Philippe Mateta, a bit like a Cruyff but he flicked it through with pace and accuracy, it's the only real chance Palace have had and they've taken it.
The word I wrote down for Brighton was 'nice', but who is the person who is going to do something a little creative?
That suits Palace, no one is breaking them down, you could read the script after five minutes. Brighton need to be a bit nastier, a little bit of bite. You have to shift the gears and move quicker and sharper.
Brighton 0-1 Crystal Palace
Brighton have not won any of their last 12 Premier League games in which they have conceded the first goal (D3 L9), since a 2-1 comeback victory against Arsenal in June 2020.
Brighton 0-1 Crystal Palace
The half-time whistle goes and Palace lead their rivals thanks to scoring with their only shot.

My computer froze at an annoying time. One minute of injury time, Brighton have a corner, the keeper catches it. That all happened.

Roy Hodgson has done brilliantly and for the stature of the football club he keeps them in the Premier League - you know what you are going to get, the chairman will be thinking he doesn't want to change but at some point you have to evolve and the squad needs that, so questions will be asked about him as well.
