Mehzeb Chowdhury: Newcastle United: The mentality of Man City (2017/18) with the finishing of Derby (2007/08)

Ditto Andy: Lots of possession, plenty of shots, zero goals. Well that's Brighton summed up - now for Newcastle

  3. 'I don't want to promise something I can't deliver'published at 21:02 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2021

FT: Man City 2-1 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham boss David Moyes, talking to BT Sport: "I thought we did a good job against a really good side. I'm really disappointed we get a chance with the last kick and didn't take it. But still, good work by the players for a great performance.

"I don't think you can play Manchester City in one way only. We tried to press when we could and cause problems. I thought we did. We put on a really good show against the best side in the Premier League. It backs up our performances at the moment.

"Today if you say we are a top four side I would say we have a long way to go. Can we finish there? I don't know. I don't want to promise something I can't deliver. But if we play like that until the end of the season we will be nearer the top than the bottom."

    'We didn't create enough'published at 20:59 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2021

    FT: Leeds 0-1 Aston Villa

    Leeds United

Leeds midfielder Mateusz Klich, speaking to Sky Sports: “We conceded a bad goal in the second phase of the set-piece. We should have done better there.

“We had some chances at the beginning. We wanted to start quickly. We knew Aston Villa were going to press us – they’re a very good side.

“We brought on offensive players to change the game. We tried but it didn’t work this time. We have games like this sometimes. We just have to be more clinical.

“I don’t think we had a good game. Maybe we managed the ball well, but we didn’t really create enough in the final third. We should do better."

Dave Payn: RE Adam (6:28 PM) - I do. There are issues in other leagues of course, but to my eyes nowhere near as often as in the PL, where the overall standard had dropped alarmingly even before VAR. Perhaps their boss is the issue.

Justin Browning: Adam’s comment about referees abroad is spot on. I watch a lot of French, German and Dutch football and believe me they have the same issues. Anyone watching the Rennes v Nice game last night would have seen it in action. Inept.

  6. 'City won when they weren't at their best'published at 20:57 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2021

FT: Man City 2-1 West Ham

    Alex Scott
Former England and Arsenal defender on Final Score

What was impressive today was for Manchester City to get that win when they weren't at their best, against a good West Ham side, that just shows the quality they have this season.

Ruben Dias brings that calm presence so instead of John Stones having to be that replacement for Vincent Kompany he can actually just concentrate on doing his job, not try to command or dictate anyone, I think that's really helped him this season.

How good is it to be able to take pressure off forwards and midfielders and know that you've got someone there who can get goals from set- pieces or whatever it might be.

  7. 'Can take positives'published at 20:55 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2021

FT: Man City 2-1 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham scorer Michail Antonio, speaking to Sky Sports: "There are definitely some positives we can take out of the game. Normally we'd sit back and try to counter, which we did but there were stages where we had some possession and had them chasing the game.

"That's something Manchester City are probably not used to.

"It's pleasing to get my seventh goal of the season - I just keep trying to do my best. I should have scored earlier as well. I was gutted to hit the post."

Today hasn't been a goal-fest, has it? Five in three-and-a-half matches. Here's a bit more reaction from some of the earlier games.

Wolves are finishing the half strongly. Pedro Neto fizzes the ball across the six-yard area which is just about deflected from Ruben Neves' path by Ciaran Clark. That was a vital touch by Clark.

Traore is all over the place. He's won his side a free-kick after being fouled by Ciaran Clark who gets a yellow card for his troubles.

Moments later Martin Dubravka is down to keep out Pedro Neto.

This is a much more even contest.

    Newcastle 0-0 Wolves

Adama Traore spent a good minute dousing his arms with baby oil before the match in an attempt to give his opponents the slip.

It's working a treat. No one in a black and white shirt can lay a hand on him and he's springs away to create another chance for Pedro Neto who lashes it wide.

By the way, Miguel Almiron is back on the pitch. That's very good news for Steve Bruce as he has been one of Newcastle's better players.

A change in attitude, formation & style seems to have coincided with the arrival of Willock & Jones. I'd say players are playing for survival. If we had started the season like this....

It's all got a little bit scrappy as far as Newcastle are concerned.

Jamaal Lascelles gets on the wrong side of Willian Jose and is forced to concede a free-kick.

It's swung into the box but Wolves cannot test Martin Dubravka.

Tambuwal: Newcastle united's Allan Saint-Maximin is a joy to watch.

Best I've seen Newcastle play in a long time, just no end product. This is really promising though!

  17. CLOSE!published at 35 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Wolves

Wolves have sprung into life and Pedro Neto pulls a great chance wide after a lovely run by Adama Traore who used his pace to get behind the Newcastle defence.

After a confident start, the hosts are now having to soak up a bit of pressure.

  18. CLOSE!published at 33 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Wolves

Wolves haven't offered too much going forward but they very nearly take the lead as Adama Traore meets a cross at the back post and Martin Dubravka needs the help of a post to ensure the header doesn't end up in the net.

  19. Postpublished at 31 mins

This is not good news for Newcastle.

Miguel Almiron has had to go off for treatment and the hosts are down to 10 men as the forward receives further treatment on the sidelines.

Regarding that booking earlier for Isaac Hayden...

No player has been cautioned more than Hayden in the Premier League this season (8, level with Hector Bellerin and Conor Gallagher)
