Important to highlight - Newcastle's players are still playing for Steve Bruce. Their high-octane performance is missing one thing - a goal.

    Newcastle 0-0 Wolves

They've hit the post and now they've had a goal disallowed.

Allan Saint-Maximin pounces after Rui Patrício beats away Joe Willock's attempt.

However, Saint-Maximin is off-side. Nothing like the controversy when Brighton had a goal chalked off at West Brom earlier.

    Newcastle 0-0 Wolves

This is much better from Newcastle. They're taking the game to Wolves and have an energy and intensity which has the visitors back-tracking.

Another lovely passage of play on the edge of the box ends with Joelinton trying to bend it around Rui Patrício.

  4. YELLOW CARDpublished at 21 mins

Isaac Hayden is fine to continue - so much so that he earns himself the game's first yellow card moments after climbing back to his feet.

He's tearing after Adama Traore and catches the Wolves man with a late challenge which offers the visitors a free-kick in dangerous territory.

Even I felt that - and I'm 100 miles away from the action!

Isaac Hayden is down in pain following a crunching challenge with Ruben Neves.

Nice stuff from Newcastle and Allan Saint-Maximin is at the heart of another encouraging move. The ball is clipped towards the back post and Rui Patrício is up for it but spills his catch. Fortunately for Wolves it is scrambled clear.

That attempt just about sums up Newcastle's luck at the moment.

By the way, that was a lovely ball by Jonjo Shelvey to release Almiron.

The Wolves defence was completely caught cold.

    Newcastle 0-0 Wolves

    That's so close!

Miguel Almiron springs the off-side trap and cuts into the penalty area with only Rui Patricio to beat. He still has a lot of work to do but beats Patricio from an angle only for the ball to bounce back off the post.

Allan Saint-Maximin is seeing a lot of the ball in these opening exchanges. Newcastle need a big performance from him. The Magpies are on the front foot but they're struggling to create chances.

Miguel Almiron does really well to win a free-kick from Jonny which leads to the game's first decent chance as Isaac Hayden tests Rui Patrício with a header. It's pretty much straight at the Wolves keeper but this has been an encouraging start by Newcastle.

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce, speaking about the season reaching a critical point: "Well, it's certainly coming to the tickly part, that's for sure.

"I always say when the daffodils are up, that's a sign that the real crux part of the season is upon us and if you're at the bottom end where we are, unfortunately...

"There are six or seven. Can we finish above the six or seven? That's the aim and I'm quietly confident we can do that."

The reason why Newcastle fans haven't accepted Bruce is because like Allarardyce he is well past his sell by date.

    Alan

I don't think many fans would accept what Bruce has delivered at Newcastle. He got more money than any recent manager players have gone backwards.

  20. 'I don't recognise Newcastle'published at 19:53 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2021

    Newcastle v Wolves (20:00 GMT)

    Jermaine Jenas
Ex-Newcastle midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I cannot recognise this football club right now because it's not the football club I joined and that I was excited about.

This group of players and this manager are doing the best they can with what they have.

They are a team that most seasons is going to be around the relegation battle.
