Trent Alexander-Arnold should've done better, Austria are playing a back four and David Alaba is playing left midfield really and he was caught out by Alexander-Arnold - if he had hit that hard and low he would've scored.

  3. CLOSE!published at 4 mins

    England 0-0 Austria

Gareth Southgate likes it as England carve out the first chance of the game.

Skipper Harry Kane sweeps a lovely crossfield ball to Trent Alexander-Arnold darting down the right flank and his thumping drive is tipped over the bar by Daniel Bachmann.

From the resulting corner, young Jude Bellingham nods a free header straight at the Austria goalkeeper.

Luke: Bizarre this desire for Lingard over Saka. Saka has teams doubling up on him and is one of the most fouled players in the league as teams are scared of him. Lingard has only had 3 decent months in the last 5 years. Saka 2 years of consistent quality and growth

England boss Gareth Southgate, speaking to ITV Sport: "They are excited to get on with playing some matches. There's been a little break since the end of the season, they've trained very well."

Chance for Trent Alexander-Arnold to impress? "There have been games [where he has impressed] and what we want him to do tonight is have the freedom to get forward from right back. It important we play a game that suits him."

On Jude Bellingham starting: "He's not in the 26 for the journey. He is a player who has impressed us throughout the season. He has shown great maturity and we are looking forward to seeing him in the game."

The pair had been exiled by Joachim Low two years ago - but he has evidently decided picking your best players is actually a good idea again.

I'm not sure about that one, they've got a bit to do to convince me.

    England v Austria (20:00 BST)

    Chris Waddle

Austria are a good side they'll give England a good game they've got some good players - it's like a Bundesliga team and we know the German league is strong. They're a well organised side, they'll ask questions of England.

I'm looking at that pair at the back of Tyrone Mings and Conor Coady that have probably never played together before and Kieran Trippier playing left-back instead of right-back - so there's a few things there which will be interesting to watch and good for Gareth Southgate to see how they perform in these positions because he may have to call upon them.

  18. 'Players aren't just picked on football ability'published at 19:37 British Summer Time 2 June 2021

    England v Austria (20:00 BST)

    Stephen Warnock
Ex-Aston Villa and Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

One of the big surprises will be Bukayo Saka making the squad ahead of Jesse Lingard but he covers three positions - he can play as a left-back, a left mid or centre mid and can play in attacking roles so that's where he's probably got the edge.

I played with Lingard at Derby and he is hugely infectious - that will have been difficult for Gareth Southgate to not pick him on his personality. You don't pick just on football ability you have to pick on what they're going to be like behind the scenes as well.

When I went to the World Cup I knew I wasn't going to play - I had Ashley Cole in front of me, I was an understudy. I knew my role in the squad was to go and perform every day in training and keep the level as high as I could to prepare the team for the next game, to make sure that when they step out on the pitch they've gone up against a proper challenge in a training session. We knew the 12 or 13 players that would get picked and we almost had a training squad. But we knew that and knew that if we did it right there's a chance you come home covered in glory - you were happy to make the sacrifice to be part of that and that's something you have to look at when you're picking a squad.

Mikey: Yes, four right backs is technically overkill. But there's 3 extra players to a normal squad, and they all play RB, RWB and: TAA: RW, RCM Trippier: LB James: RCB Walker: RCB

joshua tomkinson: You could almost guarantee if Southgate had picked JWP or Lingard ahead of TAA (The only one of the four right-backs not to win a trophy this season) the same people moaning about him picking 4 right backs would be moaning that Trent wasn't in the squad
