To be available for the team, even if you're not in the squad, is a certificate for your character to support the team no matter what. Jesse Lingard is there to support the team even if he's not in the final squad - for all the others to have the opportunity to compete at a high level and be ready for the games, so it's crucial input from him to be available and to give his best every day.

You tell them, Jack.

But seriously, did he really need to pick four right-backs?

Jack Tanner: if you don't want to support England, fine. But if you do, get behind the team instead of spending the next month moaning about how many right backs are in the team or how you think Southgate is a useless manager.

Some of these guys are on the crest of a wave having just won a trophy - they know how to win things, that breathes that mentality in the squad that you're in and understanding how to get over the line is something Gareth Southgate will have looked at I think. It's possible that's why he's included those four right-backs because they've all won trophies and they understand how to play in big pressure games.

One of the important things about being in an environment where there's no one else around and with covid as well that's even more heightened - to be able to have a settled environment where everyone gets on, there will be arguments and confrontation but it's how quickly you diffuse that because you've got 26 players plus all the staff all living in each other's pockets. You're going to get frustrated at times but what Gareth has tried to do is to be more open and relaxed with everyone and that has gone onto the players.

England manager Gareth Southgate has named the 26 players he hopes will end the nation's wait for a major trophy that stretches back to the 1966 World Cup.

Southgate faced several big calls on form, fitness and squad balance for the European Championship as he finalises his plans for the opening game against Croatia at Wembley on 13 June.

The interesting point now is who starts and what formation they will play in?

If Harry Maguire is injured then we'll go to a back three, then it's different and Kyle Walker might become a centre-back alongside John Stones and Reece James might play right side centre-back - then you're down to two wing-backs so right-backs are down to two and you're looking at a toss of a coin between Kieran Trippier and Trent Alexander-Arnold, so that can change the whole complex of the squad.

You could change the back three again and put Tyrone Mings, Conor Coady and Stones in, then you've got three people fighting for the right wing-back spot and then all of a sudden everyone's talking about that.

At the end of the day we've got Alexander-Arnold who has won the Premier League and the Champions League in the last two years, Walker is a Premier League winner, Trippier is a La Liga winner and James had an incredible game and won the Champions League so we've got four incredible right-backs. England are blessed on that side, it was always going to be a big ask for Gareth Southgate.

I don’t get that, I think you’ve still got enough players to put a team out and make substitutions if you need to at half-time, the ones who are not going, what if Lingard scores a hat-trick tonight? People are going to be saying why is he not playing, why is he not going to the tournament so sometimes you think you’ve done a job.

The only advantage of that is, Gareth then could say if I get an injury before the tournament I can bring somebody in, so it might be Jesse Lingard who does get back into the squad or James Ward-Prowse as the week goes on.

Jesse Lingard has the chance to "show me I'm wrong" after being left out of the England squad for Euro 2020 says Gareth Southgate.

Lingard was one of seven players cut from the provisional squad, but the on-loan West Ham forward starts tonight's friendly against Austria.

It is one of two warm-up games for the Three Lions before the tournament, with the other against Romania on Sunday.

Southgate said: "Jesse has had a good spell with West Ham and is someone who has played so well with England. We have total trust in the way he plays, he is reliable, a great member of the group."

As expected Jesse Lingard, cut from Gareth Southgate's Euro 2020 squad yesterday, starts tonight while Jude Bellingham makes his first senior start at the age of 17.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kieran Trippier both start, with Alexander-Arnold set to line up at right back with Trippier likely to be either playing as a right-sided centre-back, or at left back.

There's no Chelsea or Manchester City players involved in this game, having played in the Champions League final on Saturday.
