Away we go at the Riverside.
What do we want to learn today then?
Which fringe players can step up if needed? If England are firing in the final third? How fit Jordan Henderson is?

I think it's a great decision to not play a lot of the expected tournament starting 11. He's saving players after a hectic season. Giving a few players a run out, testing a few. Saving others. Leave it for the tournament. Hopefully no injuries tonight.
Calder
Saka a massive loss for England today. Has to be our most dangerous attacking player. Would frighten any defence in world football when he's running at them
Jake, Nottingham
Southgate clearly has no clue, Saka scores and is man of the match in last match but doesnβt even make the squad today! No way England do anything in Euros with him in charge

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live
Very tough isn't it. I think against Croatia Gareth will go with the two sitting and probably Kalvin Phillips purely on that little bit more experience and that's where he might get the edge over Jude Bellingham.
However I do feel that Bellingham will have a big part to play for England. I think he'll get 10, 20 minutes here and there but will force Southgate to give him longer.

Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about his England call-up:
"It's a surreal feeling. I got a message from my Leeds team-mate Luke Ayling who just went out and bought his England shirt with my name and number on the back. It's a weird feeling because I never thought I'd be in this position, but to be here is a surreal feeling and I'm just happy to be here.
On what he was doing during Euro 2016: "I can just remember being in my living room with a few friends. I had the flags outside my house and everything. When you think about it you get goosebumps and the memories will stick with me.
On his the influence of his family: "I cant express how much my family have been involved in my footballing in life and my life in general. My grandma passed away sadly, but my mum, my girlfriend and my sister - all the women in my family have been very supportive of me and I'm forever grateful and I'll try and make them proud."
Harry Maguire is having to pose for pics with members of Romania's coaching staff.
Big in Bucharest, it seems.

England boss Gareth Southgate, speaking to ITV about the reaction to his players taking the knee before kick-off: "We can't control the response. We are very clear on our stand. We are united as a staff and a playing group."
England v Romania (17:00 BST)
England
England boss Gareth Southgate, speaking to ITV: "We have players who need minutes and some players who definitely don't need minutes.
"We are still open minded [on who will replace Trent Alexander-Arnold]. There are some things we still want to learn from this game but we have a pretty good idea."
On Marcus Rashford captaining the team: "He is by far the most experienced international player in the team today. We felt this was a good opportunity for him to show some leadership. He had a big smile on his face when he was told."
On Jordan Henderson: "The plan is he gets 45 minutes today and can build from there."

All those people criticising Gareth Southgate for not picking any of his Man City or Chelsea players in the warm up matches are completely forgetting that so many England players in previous tournaments have suffered from excessive fatigue at the end of long seasons (which frequently results in injuries). These players NEED a rest. Better surely to ask why UEFA appear willing to devalue their showpiece international event by allowing the final of the world premier club event to be held only a fortnight earlier.
Gareth (not Southgate).

"We didn't play well enough - we'll just have to go and lick our wounds."
That was the verdict of then-manager Kevin Keegan after England were dumped out at the group stage of Euro 2000 by Romania.
But can you name England's starting XI from that match?
#bbcfootball
Kenneth MacRae: Last game before Euro 2020 for England and Southgate has players in the team who aren't in his Euro squad? Surely a huge error. He should be playing his starting 11 for the first game.
Josh Earl: Really hoping James Ward-Prowse's inclusion in the starting XI is a sign that he's gonna be the TAA replacement. Has to be him or Jesse. But for me, JWP is massively underrated. Best set piece taker in the PL & an overall very solid player, great on the ball.
England v Romania (17:00 BST)
Phil Foden or Mason Mount?
Jordan Pickford or Dean Henderson?
Who would you pick for England's Euros opener against Croatia on 13 June?
iiO - Rapture smashing out over the speakers at the Riverside Stadium.
Tune.

Stephen Warnock's comments about Ben Godfrey also apply to Ben White. Can play anywhere across the back line plus can also play defensive midfield. A great player to have in a tournament especially when half the England squad seem to be carrying injuries.

Lovely little feature on ITV with Tyrone Mings and Conor Coady.
Didn't know the two centre-halves got on so well.
Quite cute.

Steve Fogerty: Personally I was calling for Pickford to be dropped, but have since realised how important his distribution is to the team #englandsnumber1
Ian Simpson: I will never understand why they are still playing an experimental team on the eve of a major tournament. Pick your best 11 and stick with it!
England v Romania (17:00 BST)
"We called it a skills test because that's what the players thought it was," says Trevor Bumstead, a former West Ham United youth coach. "But really it was about perseverance, determination."
Eight stations were set up around the pitch. The club's under-15 boys were each given a ball and told to work their way around the circuit until every task was completed.
At one station, they had to curl their ball into the goal from the corner flag, with their left foot and then their right. At others, they had to shoot through hoops placed over the corners of the net, or execute precise clipped or driven passes toward a target.
And it was in these sessions that Declan Rice demonstrated the persistence and drive for improvement that have seen him develop into a key midfielder for England going into Euro 2020 and a standout Premier League talent reportedly valued upwards of Β£80m.

I get not starting the Chelsea & Man City players following the Champions League final, but why aren't they on the bench? Are we seriously about to head into a tournament without playing our 1st XI in any of the warm-ups?

England boss Gareth Southgate said he wants to have Jordan Henderson around the squad for his experience even if he is injured.
Roy Keane - with a dead pan face - has had his say on ITV: "Why keep him? Does he do card tricks? A sing song?" ππ

If Mount isn't one of the first names on the England team sheet I'll eat my hat.
Charlie - London
Ben White has to start this afternoon and go to the Euros. Better centre half than Mings, Coadey, Godfrey, McGuire & Stones. Plus he can play in midfield and full back. Total no brainer in my opinion.
