Didn't realise England's record against Romania was this poor.

In 11 meetings, the Three Lions have won just twice, last achieving victory at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.

They are currently on a seven game winless run against the Romanians.

Trevor Priestman: You have to say that Kane, Grealish and Stones are the first names on the team sheet vs Croatia. After that it's a toss up between Rashford, Sterling and Sancho. Marcus, playing as captain today, could easily pen himself in to the XI with a good performance today.

  4. Former Spurs defender leads Romaniapublished at 16:12 British Summer Time 6 June 2021

    England v Romania (17:00 BST)

Romania arrive in England on the back of three successive defeats - and having missed out on a place at Euro 2020.

Captain and defender Vlad Chiriches made 27 Premier League appearances for Tottenham between 2013-2015, while Rangers forward Ianis Hagi is on the substitutes bench.

Romania are 43rd in Fifa's world rankings - 39 places below England.

Romania: Nita, Sorescu, Nedelcearu, Chiriches, Camora, Stanciu, Marin, Cicaldau, Ivan, Alibec, Puan.

Substitutes: Baluta, Budescu, Capusa, Ganea, Hagi, Iacob, Maxim, Morutan, Olaru, Rus, Vlad.

Jack Grealish can expect quite a lot of game time as a result of the Maguire injury. Southgate doesn't trust his other defenders to play 4-3-3 without Maguire in central defence. That means 3-5-2 (which appears to be formation for today too). This means a player like Grealish who draws lots of fouls and free kicks will be invaluable as we'll be down an extra attacking player and may need to rely on set-pieces for goals (like we did in Russia 2018) .

Kane, Mount, Rice, Stones and Pickford are the only guaranteed starters. That must be England's spine. Every other position has enough depth where it can be flexible.

Forget Grealish. Why hasn’t Foden been in the squad past two games? Sterling too

The build-up to this game has been overshadowed somewhat...

Gareth Southgate says England's players will ignore any "adverse reaction" and take the knee during Euro 2020.

Boos circulated around the Riverside Stadium when players took the knee before England's friendly win over Austria on Wednesday.

Southgate said at the time "some people aren't understanding the message".

"We feel more determined than ever to take the knee," said Southgate.

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

The interesting one for me is Ben Godfrey playing right back. He is your dream player to take to a tournament. He can play anywhere across the back line. If you go to a back three he's more than comfortable.

There's nothing to say you won't pick up a couple of injuries in a tournament. He is arguably one of the most improved players this season and one of the best buys of the season. The way he has transformed into a top Premier League player has been outstanding. He is the one I think will be the sneaky outsider to get that position.

Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire hasn't trained since suffering ankle ligament injury last month.

"With any injury, it's impossible to predict 100%. Our medical team are pleased with his progress, and particularly over the last couple of days," said England boss Gareth Southgate.

"We know there is always that risk, but all of the guidance is that he should be available, and it's a case of when he can slot back into training with the group and how quickly we can progress him."

I think it will be interesting how much of a part Jordan Henderson will play in this game, how fit he looks, how he reacts and how strong he feels. I think he has to be honest with Gareth Southgate as well. He's a hugely important player for England.

When I look at England, they have winners in the squad now. Jordan Henderson has lifted Champions League and Premier League. On and off the pitch over the last 18 months he has been remarkable and he's very well respected in the squad.

To be in the squad he needs fitness levels of 80% and above. He's had surgery. He's recovered from it, he's had a week before the final game of the season. He's at a level of 20-30% above Harry Maguire already as well. He's lean, he's trim, he's fit, we've seen him come back from injury for Liverpool before. He's a natural athlete. When you look at Harry Maguire, I've had that injury and I did it just before the squad was announced in 2010 and it's such a horrible injury. Jordan Henderson is a lot further ahead.

West Brom keeper Sam Johnstone makes his first senior England appearance as Gareth Southgate makes NINE changes to the side that started against Austria.

Manchester United duo Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford return, while Tyrone Mings and Jack Grealish are the only survivors from the side that started the last match.

Standby players Ben Godfrey, Ben White and James Ward-Prowse all start as they look to impress, with Southgate set to name a replacement in his Euro 2020 squad for the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Rashford is captaining England for the first time in the absence of Harry Kane, while White and Godfrey are making their first England starts.

England: Johnstone, Godfrey, White, Mings, Shaw, Grealish, Phillips, Ward-Prowse, Rashford, Calvert-Lewin, Sancho.

Substitutes: Pickford, Ramsdale, D Henderson, Trippier, Coady, J Henderson, Lingard, Watkins, Bellingham, Kane, Rice.
