England's path to the 2022 World Cup hit an unexpected stumbling block when they were held to a draw by Hungary in a qualifier marred by crowd violence at Wembley.

We are back on Wednesday for more international action.

    Until then.

  2. Crowd trouble at Wembley

    England 1-1 Hungary

    Police

In case you missed it earlier...

Hungary fans fought with police in the opening minutes of tonight's World Cup qualifier against England at Wembley.

Some of their supporters, totalling almost 1,000, booed again as England players took the knee before kick-off.

A Metropolitan Police statement said: "Officers entered the stand to arrest a spectator for a racially aggravated public order offence in relation to comments directed towards a steward.

"As officers made the arrest, minor disorder broke out."

  3. 'It's a big disappointment'

    England 1-1 Hungary

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: “I don’t think we played at the level we have done and Hungary defended very well. We didn’t do enough to win the game.

“I don’t know if subconsciously we thought this was going to be an easier game because we beat them comfortably in September but they’ve been very good defensively right through the summer. In the first few minutes we were taking heavy touches and colliding into tackles. We didn’t show the composure and quality that we have done generally.”

On the penalty conceded by Luke Shaw: “I haven’t really seen it. Luke feels it was harsh.”

On taking off Jack Grealish: “We wanted to change the shape to pose a different problem but also to stop the counter attacks, and you have to take one of the forwards off to do that. That made us less vulnerable but it didn’t really improve our attacking play. There were individual pieces of skill rather than fluid team movements.”

On the crowd trouble: “I’m only hearing this as I’m doing the interviews. I was aware of a disturbance. It sounds like it was not acceptable but I haven’t seen the detail.”

On qualification: “We’re in a very strong position in the group but tonight is a big disappointment. We have to make sure we get it right next month.”

    Joakim Maehle celebrates

Denmark qualified for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar as they maintained their 100% record with a narrow win over Austria in Copenhagen.

Joakim Maehle scored the only goal for the hosts, with a low effort into the bottom left corner after Thomas Delaney's superb run.

It deservedly gave the Danes their eighth consecutive victory in Group F.

  6. 'There's a lot to improve on and look at'

    England 1-1 Hungary

    England

England defender John Stones to BBC Radio 5 Live: "We're disappointed with our performance, with how it turned out. We've set high standards and we've recreated them and been consistent. Tonight wasn't one of those nights.

"We're disappointed but we showed great character and resilience to come back from 1-0 down. We haven't been in those situations often.

"There's a lot to improve on and look at. That's football. We move on and take the positives. Another good point on the road to the World Cup."

On Hungary's penalty: "My initial thought was no penalty straight away because of how he moved his head down towards Luke Shaw's foot. He made a meal of it. I don't think there was contact. I don't know if he [the referee] has looked at it long enough. It was disappointing. Those go on all the time in the middle of the pitch and nothing happens.

"It's frustrating to concede and not get back on the clean sheet run.

"[Scoring is] something I thought about a lot. I worked hard in training to get on scoresheet. If I didn't score we'd have lost the game.

"It's been a while since my last goal. The hard work paid off."

  7. Stat attack

    England 1-1 Hungary

    • England (W14 D4) have gone 18 games without defeat in all competitions for the first time since a run of 19 between November 1965 and November 1966.
    • England remain unbeaten in their last 32 home qualifying matches for major tournaments (World Cup/Euros – W28 D4), since a 2-3 defeat to Croatia in November 2007.
    • Three of the last six goals England have conceded at Wembley stadium have come from the penalty spot (excluding shootouts), including Roland Sallai’s opener for Hungary in this game.
  8. 'We fell below par'

    England 1-1 Hungary

    England

England defender Kyle Walker to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Over the last couple of years we've set such a high standard, we fell below par tonight. We're disappointed but it's a point in the right direction.

"They've won against good nations. We knew it would be difficult. When they're coming to our patch we need to do a little more in front of goal.

"We're a big nation now, we're a massive nation. Teams will set up differently. We have to try to break that down.

"It's a step in the right direction and we'll move on.

"There are still two important games coming up. We need maximum points. It's a point on the board and let's move on. It's a bad night."

  9. Getting tight in the group

Poland have closed the gap on England to three points with two games remaining after beating Albania 1-0.

The game was held up for almost 20 minutes after Albania fans threw bottles at Poland players following Karol Swiderski's 77th-minute goal.

It eventually restarted and there were no more goals.

  10. 'We have to go away and reflect'

    England 1-1 Hungary

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate tells ITV: "Disappointing performance. Full credit to Hungary, they caused us a tactical problem and we were not fluid. We did not play at the level we need to play, simple as that. Difficult to pin-point and we will look at the balance of the team. We made simple mistakes with the ball.

"We have to go away and reflect and should not judge things on one game and that experiment. From the start, we were not sharp with our play, gave the ball away, were over-running things and for the first time in a long time we have to hold our hands up today.

"I don't think we should look at individuals, collectively we did not play at the level we need to."

  11. Post update

    England 1-1 Hungary

    Matt Upson

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I was really interested to see how this would work. It just confirms balance trumps talent on the pitch.

Getting the balance right especially in the mdidle is crucial. It was a change for England against a team who turned up and played.

We weren't set up well enough with the press. They played through us too much. We shouldn't be allowing Hungary to look like a good team at Wembley.

The result was a fair one.

Dan in Surrey: Bring on the doom and gloom merchants. England still massive favourites to qualify.

Mark Emms: England are just dull and flat. A bit like Wilder and Joshua’s fight career at the moment. Yes we will qualify but nothing to get excited about.

BenHere: Very poor tactics by England, they must have confused completed passes with goals! They could have played with prams with all their walking.

  13. 'We did enough to win the game'

    England 1-1 Hungary

    England

England midfielder Declan Rice tells ITV: "You can say it is poor because we drew the game but we dominated. Silly penalty to give away but we got back into the game and could not get that killer touch.

"You have to give credit to the opposition sometimes, Hungary were much better than when we played them away. I still think we did enough to win the game."

On playing alongside Mason Mount and Phil Foden: "That is the first time we have played together as a three, we know what the manager asks of us and we have to put that into practice on the pitch."

On the penalty: "When you put your foot up that high it could be but the way he went down was a bit pathetic."

  14. Post update

    England 1-1 Hungary

    Rob Green

Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

We said at the start if you have all your best attacking options on the pitch and it doesn't work out, where do you go? We found that a bit.

We took Jack Grealish off, I thought he was our most creative players and we ran out of ideas.

Hungary were great. They played their football. We tended to hit longer-range passes from deeper which played in their hands.

    It petered out.

  15. FULL-TIME

    England 1-1 Hungary

    All over.

England are held at home by Hungary and still have a bit of work to do to reach Qatar next year.

  16. Post update

    England 1-1 Hungary

Kyle Walker booms a cross-field pass into the box but Peter Gulacsi is off his line quickly to claim another Ollie Watkins' head.

  17. Scotland make late breakthrough

Scotland have made the breakthrough in the Faroe Islands, thanks to Lyndon Dykes four minutes from time.

Israel lead Moldova 2-0 so they are third as things stand and Austria will be unable to finish second in Group F.

  18. CLOSE!

    England 1-1 Hungary

It's a looping cross from Luke Shaw which is headed away but recycled into the box.

It finds Ollie Watkins at the far post but the Villa striker loses his footing at the vital moment and cannot get a clear strike away.

  19. Post update

    England 1-1 Hungary

That's so poor, Phil Foden's delivery hits the first man.

So does Luke Shaw's on the follow-up but England have a corner late on.
