  1. Kane or Vardy debatepublished at 19:19 British Summer Time 12 October 2021

Talking of Harry Kane, I saw an interesting debate on Twitter the other day.

Clinical finisher Kane may well break the goalscoring records for club and country and has received plenty of personal accolades.

But Jamie Vardy will end his playing days with a Premier League and FA Cup winners' medals.

Whose career would you rather have?

    Thumbs up for Kane.

    Thumbs down for Vardy.

Harry Kane has scored 41 England goals and 36 of those have been netted in competitive internationals. In England’s history, only Wayne Rooney (37) has ever scored more goals in competitive games than Kane.

Rooney scored one every 154 minutes in competitive games, while Kane is scoring on average one every 118 minutes.

Only a matter of time before he becomes England's all-time leading goalscorer?

This is truly exciting times with the talent in the England squad. However to go to that next level & win trophies, Southgate needs to be more fearless in the big games & not sit on leads. I hope he's learnt!

I'd be interesting to see how they actually play and what Harry Kane does. We've seen him dropping into that space but do we need him there or do we want him as a focal point, a traditional number nine. I want to see whether that translates throughout the game.

The only concern I'd say is if you put all creative influences in at the start and can't change it with subs, you might come unstuck.

Hungary are on a terrible run but they're not a bad team. It's not that kind of done deal [like San Marino or Andorra].

Declan Rice is more than capable of holding the fort in front of the centre-backs and it allows Foden and Mount to be more central.

To play those two together with the front three is incredibly exciting.

Truly this is our golden generation, playing for the best club sides in the world, coached by the game's top coaches. And players of the quality of Sancho, Bellingham, Saka and Greenwood waiting in the wings! What a difference to the last 50 years!

Same old same old. Good enough to get through qualifiers and that's it. We don't have world class or world beater players unless you believe the media because according the them we've won every tournament since 66 with the world beaters they like to big up

  9. The 'most influential' black footballer and his links to slaves and slave tradepublished at 19:04 British Summer Time 12 October 2021

    Andrew WatsonImage source, Rachell Dallas

There are two murals of black footballers facing one another across an alleyway in Glasgow. One helped shape football as we know it, the other is Pele.

Andrew Watson captained Scotland to a 6-1 win over England on his debut in 1881. He was a pioneer, the world's first black international, but for more than a century the significance of his achievements went unrecognised.

Research conducted over the past three decades has left us with some biographical details: a man descended of slaves and of those who enslaved them, born in Guyana, raised to become an English gentleman and famed as one of Scottish football's first icons.

And yet today, 100 years on from his death aged 64, Watson remains something of an enigma, the picture built around him a fractured one.

His grainy, faded, sepia image evokes many different emotions: awe, pride, passion, and for one man in particular, discomfort.

  10. Rashford says support after racist abuse was a 'special moment'published at 19:00 British Summer Time 12 October 2021

    England v Hungary (19:45 BST)

Marcus Rashford has said the support he received after being targeted with racist abuse following the Euro 2020 final was a "special moment" for him.

The Manchester United striker was targeted on social media after missing his spot-kick in England's penalty shootout defeat by Italy.

His vandalised mural in Manchester was then adorned with messages of support.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Rashford said: "That was nice, it's something you won't ever forget."

In his first interview on the subject since the Euros, the 23-year-old added: "It's hard to describe the feeling it gives you, but one thing I've always said is that I want to see people act as one in communities and environments and that was one big highlight for me.

"It was a time everyone came together and whatever they thought was the right thing to do, they just did it and it was a special moment."

The Metropolitan P[olice has increased its presence outside Wembley in the lead-up to the visit of Hungary tonight.

Following the racist abuse directed at England players last month in the World Cup qualifying fixture in Budapest and the unrest at the Euro 2020 final, the Football Association is also putting in place robust procedures to deal with any trouble.

The Guardian reports, external extra measures will be in operation despite fewer than 1,000 tickets having been sold to Hungary supporters for the Group I match.

Tonight's match at Wembley is the return game from the one that took place at Puskas Arena last month in which racist abuse was aimed at England players.

Three Lions players were also pelted with objects in the second half and a flare was thrown on the pitch by the home fans, with Fifa opening disciplinary proceedings after the game.

Despite Uefa ordering Hungary to play three home games behind closed doors after their supporters' discriminatory behaviour at Euro 2020, fans were allowed in as the game came under Fifa's jurisdiction.

England condemned the abuse as "completely unacceptable" while British Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged Fifa "to take strong action against those responsible for the disgraceful behaviour".

It's an attacking team, I'm looking forward to Phil Foden and Mason Mount playing together in an attacking midfield pair with Declan Rice.

The front three is pretty much as good as it gets for England.

Gareth Southgate has a group strong enough in order to change the team. The players don't get upset, they accept this is the process the team need in order to win.

Three games remaining, two wins required and one of those should come against San Marino.

England are almost there, they can smell the musky odour of next year's tournament in the Middle East.
