This is a quality Belgian side. I don't care how many players are missing, they are quality.

Kevin de Bruyne can change games. He is world class, he can do it by himself. We've got to be aware of that and we can't leave them any gaps. If we play the way we did against Belarus, they will exploit those gaps and hurt us.

Belgium would be some scalp to take tonight, even if they are missing some star performers.

In fact, a home win would go down as one of the great results in Welsh history.

"In our three qualifying campaigns, we have 27 games, 25 victories and two draws," Roberto Martinez pointed out in his pre-match press conference.

Yikes. That is quite a record.

Still, Wales do not lose often on their own patch these days. It should be an intriguing contest.

Wales have only lost one of their past 18 home matches in qualifying for major tournaments, a 1-0 defeat against the Republic of Ireland in October 2017.

They have not conceded more than once in any of those 18 games, shipping just seven overall.

However, Belgium are on an even more impressive run.

The world number ones are unbeaten in their past 27 World Cup qualifiers, the second-longest current unbeaten run behind England (31).

Belgium's long stretch began with a 2-0 away win in Wales back in September 2012.

It's a great opportunity for the lads. We've got a great record against Belgium, we're a bit of a nemesis for them if anything! I don't know what it is, but you have certain teams in football that you seem to just have something over.

Wales may start as underdogs this evening, but Robert Page's players will need no reminder of what is possible against tonight's opponents.

Okay, so they were beaten - albeit in creditable fashion - when they travelled to Belgium earlier in the opening game of this World Cup qualifying campaign.

But Wales memorably beat the Belgians on this ground during qualifying for Euro 2016 - and drew the away qualifier - and then there was that quarter-final meeting at the tournament.

Ashley Williams, Hal Robson-Kanu and Sam Vokes were on target on perhaps the finest in Welsh football history.

But let's be honest, you probably didn't need reminding about that one.

  9. Playing Bale 'too much of a gamble'published at 19:21 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2021

    Wales v Belgium (19:45 GMT)

More from Robert Page on Sky Sports: "We decided on Gareth [Bale] yesterday. He had a rest day, we looked at him but then decided it's too much of a gamble.

"He's been brilliant in showing his commitment to the cause and pushing himself to get back but we don't want to continue to beat his body. It's the sensible thing to do to make sure he's ready for March."

Wales manager Robert Page on Sky Sports: "We want that home tie. We saw the impact that a home crowd can have on Saturday evening.

"We want to finish second, it's been our ultimate aim from the start. To finish second behind one of the best teams in the world is some achievement.

"We can only control what we can control and that's what we've got to focus on tonight. It's a big ask, two big games in quick succession, but it's important we maintain our standards. If we do that, we'll get the result.

"When it comes to players on yellow cards, it's heart over head for me. My head's been telling me not to play the players on bookings and guarantee that they're playing, even if it's an away tie, but my heart tells me we've got to go out and win every game and the players will tell you no different."

Portugal, Scotland, Italy, Russia, Sweden, Poland, North Macedonia and Wales are already certainties to be involved in the World Cup play-offs.

Tonight's games will decide the other five nations who will make up the dozen competing for three places in Qatar in the play-offs next March.

The play-offs are split into six single-leg semi-finals, with the six seeded teams at home.

The play-off semi-finals are split into three paths. The winners of semi-finals 1 and 2 meet in play-off final A, the winners of semi-finals 3 and 4 meet in play-off final B and the winners of semi-finals 5 and 6 meet in play-off final C.

For the play-off finals, also played over one leg, a draw is conducted in advance to determine which semi-final winner will play at home.

    Listening carefully?

Wales' 5-1 thumping of Belarus last Saturday means their fate is in their hands tonight.

If they can cause an upset and beat Belgium, Wales will definitely be seeded - which means a home tie - in the World Cup play-off semi-finals.

If they draw with the Belgians, Wales will be seeded if Turkey fail to win in Montenegro by four goals or more and Norway fail to win in the Netherlands by three goals or more.

But if Wales lose, they will not be among the seeded teams and will be off on their travels for a play-off semi-final next March.

With the likes of major powers Italy and Portugal already certain to be at home in the play-offs - as are Scotland who booked their place last night with a fine win over Denmark - Wales could face a very tricky trip if they don't find the right result tonight.

Whatever happens tonight, Wales will be two games away from qualifying for the World Cup for just a second time.

That play-off place may have long been secured but a first play-off since 1958 is still something to be cherished.

A home semi-final would be even more precious.

Belgium are without a host of stars tonight but there are still plenty of familiar names.

The Group E winners and world number one side make six changes from Saturday’s 3-1 win over Estonia.

Attacking midfielder Eden Hazard and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois have both returned to club side Real Madrid to manage fitness issues, while Lyon centre-back Jason Denayer is also ruled out.

Benfica centre-back Jan Vertonghen, Atletico Madrid winger Yannick Carrasco and Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke drop to the bench.

The players coming in are goalkeeper Koen Casteels, centre-backs Dedryck Boyata and Arthur Theate (making his international debut), wide player Thorgan Hazard and forwards Charles de Ketelaere and Divock Origi.

Belgium: Casteels; Castagne, Boyata, Theate; Meunier, De Bruyne (c), Witsel, T. Hazard; Vanaken, De Ketelaere, Origi.

Subs: Sels, Kaminski, Faes, Vertonghen, Trossard, Carrasco, Mertens, Vanzeir, Dendoncker, Benteke, Saelemaekers, Lokonga.

Captain Gareth Bale is out of Wales’ squad as they make three changes from Saturday’s 5-1 hammering of Belarus.

Bale had been substituted at half-time against Belarus – his first game for two months because of a hamstring injury – and said afterwards that change was “planned”, adding that he was not injured.

But he has not even been named on Wales’ bench to face Belgium, the Real Madrid forward not deemed fit enough to start a second game in quick succession.

Bale is replaced by Cardiff City striker Kieffer Moore, who is back from suspension.

Ethan Ampadu is banned after picking up a yellow card against Belarus, so Chris Mepham replaces him in defence. Midfielder Joe Morrell comes in for Harry Wilson.

Wales: Ward; Mepham, Rodon, B. Davies; C. Roberts, Allen, Morrell, Ramsey (c), N. Williams; James, Moore.

Subs: Hennessey, A. Davies, Gunter, Wilson, T. Roberts, J. Williams, Colwill, Norrington-Davies, Lawrence, Vaulks, Johnson, Thomas.

Good evening and welcome to Wales, where the world's best national team are the visitors tonight.

Robert Page's Wales take on Roberto Martinez's Belgium, with the home side in need of a result as they bid to improve their World Cup qualification prospects.

We already know Wales will be in the play-offs next March.

What is still to be determined is who they will face - as well as where they will play - and avoiding defeat tonight could mean a more favourable play-off semi-final.

We'll take you through all the build-up and action, but let's start with a look at the teams.
