  7. 'The only thing that counts is to score'published at 17:44 British Summer Time 10 April 2021

    FT: Liverpool 2-1 Aston Villa

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to Match of the Day: "I can’t remember the last time we did it easy but it’s fine in our situation after losing six home games. Aston Villa are a really good team. You play a good game, a really good game, then you can see it with your first half mistake.

"You score a goal which is disallowed for... I don’t know what. You go in at half-time and you think 'what’s going on here?' There was a lot of things we wanted to see from the first half but didn't, we needed to play creatively, our pressing must be the same as the first half.

"In the end, when you’re one nil down, the only thing that counts is to score a goal, which we did. It was great goal, really nice and the second goal was even nicer! We took a risk with the change - we brought in an extra midfielder - and that had a proper impact on both goals. It’s exactly what you wish for.

"All we have to do is put the other teams under pressure and win games. We have no time to waste, it’s so important to score in the moment and it’s exactly why we’re doing this."

On Trent Alexander-Arnold: "I don’t think he has to prove anything, to be honest. You can play the best season of your life and the coach of the national team has to make decisions and we respect that.

"The only thing Trent is doing is playing his best football. In the last 10 days, twice he’s played outstanding and now he scores a goal. The most important thing is we stop talking about it.

"It’s normal in football coaches make a decision. If you win the game, the coach is right, if you lose the game, the coach is wrong. When I got him he was already brilliant - the rest was Trent himself and his academy coaches."

    Christian Pulisic

    Wow!

This is really, really good football from Chelsea. The movement is exceptional.

Kai Havertz turns provider this time, feeding it through to Christian Pulisic on the left side of the box.

He absolutely thumps it into the roof of the net from close range. No placement on that, just pure power.

Eberechi Eze gives it away in his own half to Mason Mount. He lays it off to Callum Hudson-Odoi, who finds Kai Havertz.

He jinks into the box, steps inside onto his left foot and literally places it into the far corner.

The coolest finish you'll see all weekend.

  15. 'It's always hard to lose like this'published at 17:34 British Summer Time 10 April 2021

    FT: Liverpool 2-1 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith, Speaking to Match of the Day: "it just shows you how painful football can be at times when you play better the second half and concede two goals and lose the game.

"I thought Liverpool had to be at their best to beat us. First half we weren’t great but second half we had good counter-attacking opportunities and got some overloads in the final third, we've been unlucky where we hit the post as well, so it wasn't meant to be unfortunately. It's disappointing to concede so late.

"We have come a long way but the boys are never satisfied. It's always hard to lose - especially when you have taken the lea. I think that's only the second time this season we have lost a lead. We are disappointed with that but we have come up against a quality team but the opportunities we had in the second half we should've put away."

On Trezeguet's performance and injury update: "he has come on as a sub last week and made an impact and played well again today and played his part. Unfortunately he's gone off injured. We're a little bit worried to see what the extent of the injury is. He's a little bit upset, but we'll see over time."

On when Jack Grealish could return to the side: "No he isn't close. He had a set back in training last week and he'll be out for at least a few weeks."

Chelsea are one point off Liverpool in fourth. Win today and they are back in the Champions League spots. Simple as that.

  19. 'It felt massive to win'published at 17:26 British Summer Time 10 April 2021

    FT: Liverpool 1-2 Aston Villa

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to Sky Sports: "We dominated the game but we made one mistake and concede a goal. Then we score the equaliser but it's ruled out for offside. At half-time it wasn't the best mood, you can imagine but the words were OK. I didn't have to lift them too much, they knew if we continue to play like we did we would create chances again. We dealt with their game really good. It was massive, it felt massive to win. A real relief.

"We were there, we defended well, we were constantly in the creating mood without having 20 clear-cut chances. We needed that win today, these three points feel big.

"We can stop that chat about Trent, everyone agrees that he is an outstanding player. It's Gareth Southgate's decision what he does for the squad but we don't have to talk about it every week. We don't have to justify the players' status every week.

"We have to put the other teams under pressure. Everyone knows that when we get on a run we are dangerous."

  20. 'We need to get back to a consistent level'published at 17:22 British Summer Time 10 April 2021

    FT: Liverpool 1-2 Aston Villa

    Liverpool

Liverpool captain James Milner, speaking to Match of the Day: "I think many things but it was important to win, it was an important performance- it wasn't our best by any means. Decision seemed to go against us but that's the way it is. We have to stick it out and find a way.

"Aston Villa are a good team, we know that from the first game. They have got good players, they are well organised and they are tough to beat - so it's important that we got that win.

"It's nice to be in and around the Champions League spots but the most important thing is we concentrate on ourselves and try and get back to that consistent level. We need to take it in and keep improving and keep moving forward as a team."

On the VAR decision: "Not for me. I think if you ask a lot of players, nobody wants an offside given by an armpit or in an ear. Level seems to have gone out of the game."

On Trent Alexander-Arnold: "It says a lot about his character. People forget how young is he, such a young age. He's been very fortunate in his career so far, so being left out of the England squad is probably one of his first disappointments.

"But he's got a massive goal at the end, it was a great position he took up in midfield just just before. We're delighted for him."
