Malcolm: A point at home to Austria, when you've been behind twice and they are so many places above you in the world rankings, is pretty good, I would say. Early days, of course, but it could be a big point. Also, some goal, John McGinn.

Good point about the point, Malcolm! Austria are ranked 23rd in the world rankings, with Scotland 48th.

  6. 'Character' key to display - Clarkepublished at 22:15

    FT: Scotland 2-2 Austria

In his Sky Sports interview, Scotland boss Steve Clarke repeatedly praises his side's character in coming from behind twice.

"I’ve been speaking about progress for a little while, we are progressing, we can believe in ourselves a little more," Clarke said.

"You can’t keep this team down, they’ve got character and they want to keep fighting for their country.

"I thought John McGinn was offside when I saw his goal at first, but a good decision from the assistant referee and a good finish from John. We just kept the ball alive and it was a great finish. We deserve the point at least."

On what seemed a very strong penalty claim when Ryan Christie tumbled under a clumsy two-armed challenge, the manager said: "Looked like a penalty to me. If you wrap both arms around the player, it should be a penalty.

"Look at the other side, they maybe had a soft decision against them for a disallowed goal. The refereeing decisions tonight are swings and roundabouts."

How important will John McGinn's sorcery prove to be? Only time will tell.

But the dust will barely have time to settle on this pulsating encounter at Hampden before Scotland are in action again.

The Scots travel to Israel on Sunday (19:45 BST), with their hosts coming off a 2-0 defeat by Denmark. Steve Clarke's troops then face Faroe Islands back at Hampden next Wednesday.

  10. Echoes of Mexico 86?published at 21:55

    FT: Scotland 2-2 Austria

Maybe we're getting carried away here at Pacific Quay Towers in Glasgow, but John McGinn's incredible equaliser had echoes of Manuel Negrete's stunning effort for Mexico against Bulgaria.

If you haven't seen it, look it up. An absolute peach of a goal; McGinn's feels similar...

Is it a good point, really? You need to be finishing second in the group stages. Now you're looking to go over there and probably needing to get a result which will be nowhere near straight forward.

  12. 'I'm never normally that far forward'published at 21:53

    FT: Scotland 2-2 Austria

Scotland goalscorer John McGinn tells Sky Sports that he reckoned he was offside when he netted his spectacular overhead kick.

"One positive from VAR down the road is that you play until you put it in the back of the net. Before I might have just stopped. Thankfully it got us a point.

"I'm never normally that far forward but the gaffer made a couple of changes. Delighted with that. It’s a been a while since I’ve scored. I enjoy playing further forward. I play a bit deeper for Aston Villa.

"I don’t think we were as good as we can be tonight. It shows how far we’ve come, Austria were blowing out their backsides because we’ve flung everything at them. It took us a while to suss them out but we’ve got quality players and belief. "It’s not he worst, losing wouldn’t have been a disaster but it would have felt like that in there. We want to make Hampden a fortress."

Kalajdzic is 6ft 7in... Jack Hendry couldn't do much about it. Hendry should maybe look to put the man off more than attempt to challenge in the air in these isolated situations.

Andy Robertson needs to put pressure on the ball at the source. It's an anomaly of playing the back 3/back 5, take nothing away from it though it was a great header from Sasa Kalajdzic.

Good result to come away unbeaten. Hanely attacked the ball for his goal well and McGinn’s effort - with his back to goal - is a terrific finish. A very good point at the end of the day.

  19. McGinn it to win it?published at 21:40

    FT: Scotland 2-2 Austria

John McGinn's late equaliser would have been enough to win any game. As things panned out, it proved to secure a point for Scotland in a cracker against Austria.

The second 45 was wide open and Scotland deserve oceans of credit for fighting back twice to equalise at the national stadium.

We were put through the emotional wringer tonight: cracking goals, penalty appeals, towering headers, disallowed goals, ruthless strikers, yellow cards and a stunning overhead/bicycle kick.
