  2. Clarke aims to combat negativitypublished at 18:43

    Scotland v Faroe Islands (19:45)

With Steve Clarke having guided Scotland to the Euro 2020 finals, expectant supporters are hoping for more of the same in 2022 World Cup qualifying.

"The increase in expectations is because we've done well," said Clarke.

"I've been in this job a relatively short period and we've managed to qualify for a major tournament for the first time in 23 years.

"We don't want to forget that, we don't want to forget the good feeling. I don't want anybody to be too negative.

"We're certainly not negative in the camp. We're in a good place, everyone understands what we're trying to achieve."

Discophrenia: I’m going for a draw.

IndyOilman: Persisting with Cal Mac who passes the ball sideways and back all of the time. Armstrong or Fleck would've been far better. Glad to see Dykes and Adams starting and Gordon, too.

Liam Roberts: A decent attack-minded team. If only we’d played a similar forward-thinking team against Israel. We always give opponents too much respect.

  4. Frazzled over the formation?published at 18:37

    Scotland v Faroe Islands (19:45)

Scotland's likely formation is vexing our pundits on Sportsound. Much chatter on the radio about who plays where...

As long as we don't see pint-sized Ryan Fraser between the sticks and Craig Gordon galloping down the flank from a right back berth.

  5. Group F as it standspublished at 18:33

With hopes of an emphatic Scotland victory at Hampden, attention will also be on how Austria and Denmark fare this evening.

The Danes, group favourites, have maximum points from their opening two games and also boast an eye-watering goal difference of +10.

Meanwhile, Austria have four points from six after following their draw with Scotland with a come-from-behind win against the Faroe Islands.

Ultravox may have famously sang: "This means nothing to me..." back in the halcyon days of the 80s, but tonight Vienna does hold tangible interest for Scotland.

I don't think any of us wanted Scott McTominay to move back into defence. If he has I'm not sure why he's been moved back. He's Scotland's best midfielder for me...

  8. Three changes for Scotlandpublished at 18:25

    Scotland v Faroe Islands (19:45)

So, Steve Clarke makes three changes to the side that started in Israel.

Craig Gordon, Kenny McLean and Lyndon Dykes come in with David Marshall, Jack Hendry and Stephen O'Donnell dropping out.

We'd have to have a total off night not to win here. As long as Scotland play to their capabilities I don't see us not taking all the points. We'd need to be missing more than half of our players for it not to happen.

    Richard Gordon

We've got to win, pure and simple. It's the Faroe Islands at Hampden and [we're] expecting a few changes to Steve Clarke's starting line-up.

We'll get that out as soon as we possibly can. It's been an unbeaten start but it is two draws [in Group F] so it's really important that we get the win.

Leanne Crichton, Billy Dodds and Willie Miller join me [on Sportsound from now] for all of the build-up.

  16. Scotland changes afoot?published at 18:02

    Scotland v Faroe Islands (19:45)

Steve Clarke knows his starting line-up but like an opening batsman in the first Test of an Ashes series, he's giving nothing away early.

"I know what my team is - I've actually got it written down, it's in my pocket. I know the formation. But it's not something to share with the general public before the game.

"We understand the need to get the three points, so maybe a little bit less experimentation and fewer changes than maybe I'd make for a third match."

    Image caption,

Could David Marshall be rested against the Faroe Islands?

Clarke hinted he will change goalkeeper for the visit of a Faroes side who drew 1-1 away to Moldova and led in Austria before succumbing to a 3-1 defeat.

Established first choice David Marshall received some criticism for failing to keep out Dor Peretz's long-range Israel opener, and Craig Gordon or Jon McLaughlin could now get a chance to impress.

"It's possible. Three games in a week, it's possible to have a look at another goalkeeper," Clarke said.

Great Expectations - not of the Charles Dickens variety but more along the lines of heightened ambitions for Scotland.

Steve Clarke has welcomed loftier aspirations for the national side, but the manager is also urging patience in World Cup qualifying.
