Seth Gogo Egoeh: I have no pity or sympathy for Barcelona, Juventus or Real Madrid for their financial predicament. They keep spending ridiculous amount of money on transfers and also insane salaries on players weekly. Spend what you earn! Simple!

Jedr2020: The fact they have to prepare something to withdraw, suggests that they were fully signed up. This must not go without severe punishment. Big Picture was the start, now this. It will continue if they are not held accountable to trying to destroy football

Philip Reilly: The damage has been done. It’s clear that the Glazers (even if @ManUtd, external choose to do the right thing and leave this joke called ESL) have zero credibility when it comes to having the best of interests of the club and fans. It’s a disgrace. It’s shoddy “leadership"

  4. 'Credit to fans for making their case'published at 19:43 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

    Chelsea v Brighton (20:15 BST)

Brighton boss Graham Potter talking to Sky Sports: "Very pleased. Our feelings have been known, it stands against everything we know as football. It would be wrong to create something where no threat of relegation and you want the chance to compete to play in Europe.

"If we are in a place where it is stopping, that is fantastic news. Sometimes a fan can be thought of as a consumer and we are in danger if that is the case.

"Credit to the fans for making their case, and the quicker we get back to playing for points the better."

I don't agree with the stance that there should be leniancy on players and managers of the so called big 6. I agree that none of them are to blame for this, but players also aren't to blame when a club enters into administration or breaches financial fair play rules, and points deductions and relegations still happen in those cases. If clubs being relegated and players being banned from international competition makes them all hand in transfer requests to move to non-traitorous clubs, so much the better...

    Matt, Bristol

These clubs want to break away to generate more income, they are all mostly losing money and in debt. They see this as a way of digging themselves out of a hole. I think this shows that how football is run overall needs re-evaluating.

    Mr Hartley, Leeds.

Jack Clarke: Said it yesterday but even if any of these clubs withdraw or the whole thing gets cancelled, they should still be punished for even considering the idea. Dock them points, fine them, whatever. They’ve threatened the integrity of the league and that should not be forgotten.

Bluebeard: If accurate, and if they do pull out, it will be dominos, with Liverpool or Barcelona next, I'd guess. Unfortunately, the club that stands to lose most for this failing is now #Juventus, as Agnelli's former admin empire is going to close doors on him, and as a result, the club.

  8. 'We are a bit distracted'published at 19:40 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

    Chelsea v Brighton (20:15 BST)

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel on Sky Sports: "I don't know anything, I spent the last 45 minutes on the bus waiting to come to the stadium. I know I am in a super competitive club and I trust the club.

"It is all about competition and this what everyone feels watching our team. We were giving everything in the UCL, the FA Cup, we left our heart and soul on the pitch. I am not aware of any of the politics. I don't know enough and I trust the club they take decisions in the consideration we embrace competitive sport.

"It is annoying and frustrating. From Monday we wanted to build the momentum and atmosphere and being ready. It was not our fault but we have to accept we are a bit distracted and now we will see."

How can these clubs now expect to be involved with future discussions regarding CL reforms? They have no credibility. As for repercussions, I'd dock enough points to next season so it's a challenge to stay up.

  10. 'The scene at Stamford Bridge was electric'published at 19:37 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

Independent journalist Miguel Delaney on BBC Radio 5 Live: "I was outside Stamford Bridge, ready to take a picture of the protests, and a massive clear went up as if a goal had been scored. I was wondering what had been happened and then I got a message. The scene was as electric as any goal that has been scored. Ultimately it is what football is about and that community spirit and celebration. It was electric."

Jenna Abbs: You can only presume that the backlash is far beyond what was anticipated/expected. So much damage has already been done though. As a City fan I'm still massively disappointed in the actions of my club.

RJL: Massive respect for City and Chelsea, finally some good news. Let's hope Arsenal, United, Spurs and my team Liverpool join them in withdrawing.

Lewis Starks: It's staying home, it's staying home, it's staying... Football's staying home!!

These clubs shouldn't be appeased or bargained with if the ESL plans crumble. They should be punished with European bans and point deductions. Action also needs to be taken to make sure this is taken off the table for good too!

    Simon, Sheffield

Let's not forgive and forget so quickly, they knew what they were doing and chickened out when they saw the backlash. If the others stick with it don't bank on City and Chelsea not joining the bandwagon later.

    Bill, Bristol

  16. 'So obvious it is going to fall apart'published at 19:34 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea and Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

I'm not going to make excuses for Chelsea, they got it wrong. But the best thing to do when you realise something is something is hold your hand up and get out of it. Chelsea might pay themselves on the back and say 'we've destroyed this'.

It is so obvious that it is going to fall apart now.

The Chelsea owner and stuff will be forgiven, because of what they've done, but it might take a while.

  19. 'Fear of reputational damage'published at 19:31 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport

The decision was taken by owner Roman Abramovich and the Chelsea board after witnessing negative global reaction to the Super League.

There was a fear that it could do reputational damage to a club which prides itself on its community work and its role in combatting anti-Semitism.

Questions were raised internally as to whether fans would respond to the club if it continued with a proposal which has gone down so badly.

The decision was made earlier on Tuesday before protests started outside Stamford Bridge.

It is understood Chelsea was not one of the main drivers of the Super League idea, but felt it had to get on board when it was presented to them late last week.
