Tiago: I'm happy that the first domino is falling, but how is the Chelsea back office that weak that they are already pulling out after two days? Did they really not expect so much blow back?

Amen Tesfay: Really damn glad that Chelsea finally saw the right passage. But we should have never embarrassed ourselves in trying this self serving experience. Hope the ESL burns down now.

The news I've been waiting for all day. Delighted. Relieved. But no club can expect an easy ride on the way back - this has to be a moment of change in football to make it impossible for anyone to do this again.

    Chris, Chelsea fan in Orpington

I really hope that this news about Chelsea is correct. If so I hope it will kick City into gear and we will pull out of this nonsense completion as well.

  9. 'The ultimate betrayal'published at 18:57 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

Needless to say, fan groups associated with the six English clubs involved are strongly opposed to the Super League.

Liverpool supporters' group Spirit of Shankly (SOS) said it was "appalled" by the decision of Fenway Sports Group, the club's US-based owner.

In a social media post, SOS said: "FSG have ignored fans in their relentless and greedy pursuit of money. Football is ours, not theirs. Our football club is ours not theirs."

Chelsea Supporters' Trust called the move "unforgivable" and said its members and "football supporters across the world have experienced the ultimate betrayal".

The Arsenal Supporters' Trust called the club's agreement to join "the death of Arsenal as a sporting institution".

Manchester City's Official Supporters Club said the move showed "those involved have zero regard for the game's traditions", adding it was "determined to fight against this proposed Super League".

The Manchester United Supporters' Trust had earlier said the proposals were "completely unacceptable" and the ESL "goes against everything football, and Manchester United, should stand for".

Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust said the ESL was a "concept driven by avarice and self-interest at the expense of the intrinsic values of the game we hold so dear".

I honestly think that the clubs weren't prepared for anything. This sounds like an utter desperate panic from a number of clubs that have dived into something that seven days they weren't interested in because they were talking to Uefa and now they've got this all-signing and all-dancing thing.

As a Liverpool season ticket holder and fan all my life, I feel let down by our owners. Just when we were beginning to turn our fortunes around, on merit I might add, we the fans have been kicked in the face, stamped on and left to defend their disgusting decision. We don't want this ESL. No true fan does. I for one will not renew my season ticket, I'll never set foot in Anfield again. I'm absolutely disgusted with what our owners have done to us. Disgusted.

    S Vermiglio. LFC Fan.

I feel like FSG has ripped the heart out of my team and club. Just flabbergasted at the way they have treated everyone who has supported them since they came in. But at the end of the day they've proved who they are ruthless businessmen. Not sport lovers. This is the same for all the other owners. Bled the clubs dry.

I don't think Chelsea were ever massively on board, and to be honest I didn't really see a short-term benefit for them doing it.

The sides have shown a semi-united wall so far but the minute one brick crumbles then the whole wall could fall. I'm not convinced by it at all.

It always felt like one U-turn on this by one of the 12 clubs would be a pivotal moment and a potential killer blow to the plans.

Is that the sound of a house of cards creaking?

I said yesterday morning that I didn't think they wanted to get on that train, but didn't want to get left at the station.

  18. 'Unanimously and vigorously rejected the plans'published at 18:45 British Summer Time 20 April 2021

The 14 Premier League clubs not involved in the Super League plan met today to discuss the issue and subsequently released this statement...

The Premier League, alongside The FA, met with clubs today to discuss the immediate implications of the Super League proposal.

The 14 clubs at the meeting unanimously and vigorously rejected the plans for the competition. The Premier League is considering all actions available to prevent it from progressing, as well as holding those shareholders involved to account under its rules.

The League will continue to work with key stakeholders including fan groups, government, Uefa, The FA, EFL, PFA and LMA to protect the best interests of the game and call on those clubs involved in the proposed competition to cease their involvement immediately.

The Premier League would like to thank fans and all stakeholders for the support they have shown this week on this significant issue. The reaction proves just how much our open pyramid and football community means to people.

Manny Mangat: Why don’t we fans just unite and say we will not watch the Super League. No eyeballs, no ads, no revenue. Hit them where it hurts - their bottom line. Too naive?

Ana Peter: When greed overcomes passion, sports become business. Football is for people not for profit.

Ian Gibbons: it’s now 51 years since my first game at the Bridge. I’ve never experienced anything that has united so many disparate football tribes. Literally everyone who loves this wonderful game is against the anti football cartel that is trying to destroy our wonderful sport
