Liverpool 1-0 Newcastle
Mane misses again, this time poking an effort wide of the post after getting ahead of his marker in the box. Tougher chance, that, with Fernandez putting pressure on him.
Liverpool 1-0 Newcastle
What has happened to Sadio Mane?
His confidence looks shot.

Bit of frustration now?
Alexander-Arnold hammers a wild shot way over the bar.

Tom Lawrence: I haven't seen Liverpool waste this many chances in a game they're dominating since... last week.
I don't believe in curses but seeing Liverpool missing these open chances, I might start believing.

Oh Sadio Mane! Hit it, lad!
The forward is found in the box by Salah as Liverpool break. He has just the keeper to beat but stalls and fails to get an effort away, with Dubravka dropping at his feet to claim the ball.
Liverpool should be at least 2-0 up. At least.

If you’re going to go 1-0 down at Anfield so early, you’re expected to find it very difficult for the rest of the game.
Liverpool are spending the majority of the game in Newcastle’s half, but Newcastle will be quite pleased as well. If Steve Bruce gets to half-time at 1-0 he’ll fancy his chances for the second half.
Liverpool 1-0 Newcastle
Dubravka again called into action. This is a more comfortable save, forcing him to drop to his right to gather a bobbling shot from an angle from Jota.
Liverpool 1-0 Newcastle
Huge save from Dubravka!
Firmino plays a delightful ball over the top for Salah to charge on to. He has just the Newcastle keeper to beat but fails to do so, Dubravka standing tall and then reacting quickly to block and pounce on the loose ball.
That could well be a pivotal moment if Newcastle are to get something from this.

Saint-Maximin would suit Liverpool perfectly, how has he not been linked with a move? would love to see him in a red shirt.
Tim, Suffolk
Saint Maximin really is very good - criminally underrated.
Peter, Oxford
Liverpool 1-0 Newcastle
Saint-Maximin is such a fine player. He finds pockets of space and always tries to do something positive with the ball. He performs the job again to try and get a team-mate away but the home defence is switched on and alert to the danger.
Liverpool 1-0 Newcastle
To be honest Paul, I'm not sure that's the "usual" scenario. Liverpool might have had a little dip at times this season, but they did go 60-odd games without losing here.

Richard: Newcastle with average defenders - at best - trying to play out from the back against the Liverpool press. Managers get so attached to these fashionable trends that they refuse to deviate, even when it's sensible.
Paul Walmsley: Liverpool to dominate the first half but not score any more. Newcastle to come back into it in the second and salvage a point. As per usual.
Liverpool 1-0 Newcastle
With all due respect to Ciaran Clark, I'm not sure he has the skillset to playing out from the back in a precise and effective way against one of the best high-pressing sides in the league.
Liverpool 1-0 Newcastle
Liverpool should be 2-0 up. Newcastle's Ciaran Clark gifts the home side the chance with a poor touch in his own box that allows Salah to nip in. He sets up Mane for a shot that deflects to Jota to fire over.
A waste.
Liverpool 1-0 Newcastle
Actually, I'm not sure if Almiron was off for that Newcastle break. Joelinton definitely wasn't, though.
Liverpool 1-0 Newcastle
Liverpool's turn to break, leading to a Mane shot that deflects wide for a corner. The Reds can't fashion anything from it, though.
Liverpool 1-0 Newcastle
Leon Osman

The early goal set the tone for this game. Liverpool are in control but Newcastle certainly aren’t out of it.
They have tried to get in on the counter-attack once or twice, so there are opportunities for Newcastle.
Liverpool 1-0 Newcastle
Miguel Almiron and Joelinton get in each others way to spoil a Newcastle break. There is a flag up, but I only think Almiron was off. Had he stepped out of the way, Joelinton could have had a clear run on goal.
Again, though, it is Saint-Maximin who makes it, turning sharply and supplying the through-ball.
Liverpool 1-0 Newcastle
Jota again with an effort. This time it is inside the box and he does better, firing first time but straight at Dubravka. Mane did a lot of the work, bringing the ball down in the box before finding his team-mate.
Attack comfortably the best form of defence for Liverpool right now.
