Joelinton suddenly finds himself in space in the box and a clear sight of goal, but he curls his effort too close to the home keeper, who pushes the ball away.

Best chance of the second half so far.

Shelvey plays a superb ball out wide to Murphy, who is able to carry out to the edge of the Liverpool box for a shot that is blocked before it can trouble Alisson.

Soon after, Joelinton goes down after an aerial challenge with Alexander-Arnold in the box. Steve Bruce screams for a penalty on the side-line but he won't get one.

Graham Andrew Morris: Liverpool are getting nosebleeds when they go a goal up because they have been unused to being in this position for such a long time now, it's like "what do we do now?"

Angelo Lambo: This game has 2-1 Newcastle written all over it.

Bit of Brazilian on Brazilian action as Alisson comes out to save at the feet of Joelinton. The Reds keeper had to time that well or he was risking a penalty.

Mane looks to get in behind the Newcastle defence following a one-two with Jota, but Clark gets to the ball first to steer it away from danger.

We've slotted back into the same pattern as the first half.

Firmino turns his man on the edge of the box to buy himself a yard but his shot is low, tame and an easy save for Dubravka.

By most metrics, Liverpool should win this game. And yet, we start the second half with Newcastle still in with a good chance of taking something from it.

It's the lack of certainty and ability for the weak to challenge the strong that makes this game so great.

It’s been a strange one. There have certainly been a few chances for either side.

Newcastle have set up to allow Liverpool to come on to them. They are finding gaps and creating chances, but Liverpool will feel they’ve controlled the game and should be further ahead.

It is not the common approach in modern football, but does the answer to every on-field problem have to be 'buy more players'?
