Newport County manager Mike Flynn told Sky Sports: "Congratulations to Morecambe, they've had an outstanding season and they have a group of players that never know when they are beaten.

"It went wrong with two very very bad refereeing decisions that have cost us at Wembley despite us dominating the game.

"If there was contact it was outside the box and he's made the most of it, and in the first half their goalkeeper has punched our player in the head.

"I want to concentrate on how proud I am of my players and staff on the way they have conducted themselves.

"I'm just gutted for our fans who have had to see us on the wrong end of these decisions again at Wembley.

"Nine times out of 10 Joss Labadie scores those chances but it's Morecambe's day, they should go enjoy it.

"It's been a long and tough season, we need to recharge now and then I'll talk with the board and see where we go from there.

"I've always got the desire, football runs through my veins. I know I've improved as a manager, we play some really good football, and now it's time to reflect."

Morecambe manager Derek Adams told Sky Sports: “It was a difficult game, there wasn’t a lot of good play in the match.

"But in the end, we have done a lot this season to deserve to be in League One next year.

“Carlos took it really well. It was a fantastic finish.

“I am just delighted for all the supporters here today. They were bottom of League Two for so long but today they’re in League One.

“We got a good group of players at the start of the season and we felt we could get promotion. Today we have taken it to a lot of people.

“I think today it was all about Morecambe. I was never nervous. It was in the stars, it was our day.”

“The manager is a winner. He is a great young manager and he is going to go far.”

It must be said, Derek Adams has done an incredible job since his appointment at Morecambe in late 2019.

This is a club who had been consistently fighting for survival in League Two and finished a place away from relegation in two of the past four seasons.

    A sensational achievement.

Morecambe goalscorer Carlos Mendes Gomes told Sky Sports: “I worked all my life for moments like this.

"It’s unbelievable because I know how much it means to Morecambe Football Club.

“It’s my first professional club and they treated me like I family since I arrived.

“If I was writing a story, probably it would be this way. I knew that penalty would mean a lot if I put it in and I just tried to stay as calm as possible.

“I was taking penalties in training yesterday and the gaffer said to me, ‘if we get a penalty tomorrow, you are taking it’.”

  13. FULL-TIME - Morecambe 1-0 Newportpublished at 17:37 British Summer Time 31 May 2021

That's it - Morecambe are promoted to League One for the first time in their history.

The Shrimps triumph thanks to that contentious penalty from Carlos Mendes Gomes in the second period of extra time.

It is a glorious moment for the Lancashire club, but you have to feel for Newport.

Play-off final defeat is invariably tough to take. To lose like that is particularly galling.
