  2. 'Our attitude was wrong'published at 22:31 British Summer Time 1 May 2021

    FT: Everton 1-2 Aston Villa

    Everton

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "The attitude was wrong from the beginning. We didn’t start the game as well as this kind of game demands. It was an important game and would have been an important result. We lost a big opportunity to stay in the fight. We’re still in the fight but with less possibility and more difficulties.

"[Mason] Holgate made a mistake for the goal but played well against Arsenal. He made a mistake and needs to be more focused to avoid this."

On James Rodriguez's absence: "I don't think [it made a difference]. His absence was important, but from the beginning our attitude was wrong."

On Everton’s home form: "It’s unbelievable. It’s difficult to explain why, but it’s true. The away run we have is also unbelievable. The home run has affected us in the table. I hope it doesn't affect us in the end."

On Dominic Calvert-Lewin: "He’s improved a lot and I hope he’s going to improve again."

On Jordan Pickford: "He came back after injury looking secure and comfortable. I think he can have a good Euros."

"We lost a big opportunity to stay in the fight", Carlo Ancelotti tells BBC.

They remain nine points off Chelsea in fourth place.

He reiterates the home form (or lack of) is "unbelievable".

  5. 'Not a good evening'published at 22:21 British Summer Time 1 May 2021

    FT: Everton 1-2 Aston Villa

    Everton

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti: "The way we made a lot of mistakes at the beginning - no balance, no concentration... It was not a good evening. I don't know why. They showed more desire. It was an important game that we tried to win to stay in the fight. We are still in the fight but it is more and more difficult.

"It is difficult to say why [they struggle at home]. It is the same team who beat Arsenal seven days ago. We of course could do better at home for sure. It is unbelievable - the run we had away and the run we had at home.

"We were not good. We didn't have good balance with the ball and difficulties. The season is not finish yet. There are five games and we have to keep fighting. They are important games to fight and to try and reach our target."

    "The defeat."

  7. 'It's very frustrating'published at 22:17 British Summer Time 1 May 2021

    FT: Everton 1-2 Aston Villa

    Everton

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford: "We need to iron out little things and just keep going. We’ve got five games to go now and just need to win every game. It’s very frustrating."

On Everton's home form: "We work hard all week. We’ve won a lot of games away from home. The [lack of] fans play a big part in it, but it’s down to us to give our all. We do, but sometimes it doesn’t pay off."

On his own form and fitness: "I’m there to keep the ball out of the net. I’m in a good place. I’m working hard on the training pitch every day and try to give a performance for the lads come matchday.

"The England manager was there tonight but it’s about focusing on the job at hand. I like to give 100% in every game I play in. If that produces results for the lads it’s great, but it wasn’t to be tonight.

"I’ve had a little injury this season, but mentally I’m in a very good place. I’m working very hard on and off the pitch to be the best player and person I can be. Hopefully that’ll pay off come the Euros in the summer."

  8. 'We want to build consistency'published at 22:11 British Summer Time 1 May 2021

    FT: Everton 1-2 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith to BBC MOTD: "I thought it was a really good performance which was the main thing. We have lacked a little consistency of late. We took the game to a strong Everton team.

"I thought we created the better chances in the first half then we were denied by a really good goalkeeping performance. It was a great goal to win it with.

"Everybody will find it difficult without Jack Grealish. He is a very talented player but we have tried to build some consistency and momemtum.

"We wanted to be on the front foot and continue the performance from West Brom. We made a few mistakes for their goals but we knew that we were playing well and needed to take it into today's game against a top eight team.

"That's what Ollie [Watkins] can do - pick pocket the ball off centre-halves - but his all round game is getting better and better. Anwar El Ghazi showed the class he has. We want to see him do that more often but with the goals he has it shows he's done okay."

  9. 'Our build-up was better than usual'published at 22:08 British Summer Time 1 May 2021

    FT: Everton 1-2 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I thought we were really good today. Our build-up from the back was better than usual, we’ve been working on that this week. We were looking to get up the pitch gradually rather than going too gung-ho.

"Running in behind is one of my strengths, the timing of the long balls. That’s where I come into the game and can create chances from there. We did that really well today. I think we could have got a few more actually.

"I’ve got to take every game as it comes and focus on my club form."

  10. 'Really good game of football'published at 22:05 British Summer Time 1 May 2021

    FT: Everton 1-2 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith: "It was a good win. It was a really good game of football and both teams tried to win. I think we deserved it on the balance of chances. Jordan Pickford was in really good form and denied Ollie Watkins time and time again.

"It's easy for people to say we haven't got anything to play for but we want to finish as high as we can. We want to regain that momemum and consistency we had earlier in the season.

"I've said it before but for me Ollie Watkins is one of the best pressing forwards in the Premier League. I had no doubts he could come and do this in the Premier League.

"He is better than he was. He would go home and beat himself up but he gets over that a lot more now and learns. He is a really humble guy and is getting his rewards now."

On his England hopes: "That will be up to Gareth Southgate but he has seen first hand what he's got in the last squad. If he trained like he does at Aston Villa he would have certainly impressed."

  11. 'I should have scored two or three'published at 22:02 British Summer Time 1 May 2021

    FT: Everton 1-2 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa goalscorer Ollie Watkins: "It’s been a long time coming. We haven’t been playing too well of late, so it was nice to get three points away from home.

"I think I could have done better with a few chances. I should be leaving the pitch with two or three goals, but the most important thing is we got the three points.

"I think any striker will say they can do a little better with the chances I had. I just have to keep working on it. No matter who’s watching, you just have to work hard and do your best."

On his England hopes: "Any international game is magical. I’m just focusing on my club form now, trying to push us into the European spots. I think it’s a possibility. Games are coming thick and fast now. If we get a couple of wins it puts us right back up there."
