Former Manchester City midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I'm still in shock. I'm watching TV waiting for news. It's been an amazing turn of events that we've never seen before and I can't believe the knock-on effect that it's had.

  2. 'We don't want fans storming stadiums'published at 17:53 British Summer Time 2 May 2021

    Man Utd P-P Liverpool

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports: "We can only speak about what we saw. Do we want fans storming stadiums left right and centre and getting games called off? No we don’t.

"I’m not going to sit here and criticise Man Utd fans because I'm Liverpool. Two weeks ago fans came together. There will always be idiots who get involved. I think it’s a good thing, protesting not being happy at what’s happened at the club.

"There will always be someone who takes it too far – not just in a protest. That’s a night out with mates. There’s always someone who does something stupid.

"We’ve lost a game of football but I almost accept that. I’m sure that [trouble] will dominate the news. It happens to fans all the time. One clip goes everywhere and there are lots of other people doing good things.

"I don’t want to see other supporters scoring points against Manchester United fans. The majority of Man Utd supporters were peaceful."

  3. 'Some fans went too far'published at 17:49 British Summer Time 2 May 2021

BBC Radio 5 live reporter at Old Trafford

The fans are entitled to their voice and they've certainly made their voices heard this afternoon. But the statements from the Premier League and Manchester United suggest they feel that a number of fans - not all of them - went too far.

I agree with the right to protest but it has to be done properly. These guys that broke into the ground don't represent the rest of the fans. The protests outside the ground is the right way. It was vocal but relatively peaceful. Honestly disappointed to see these reckless few get onto the pitch who think they speak for us all. They couldn't be more wrong.

  5. 'The actions of a minority seen today have no justification'published at 17:46 British Summer Time 2 May 2021

    Man Utd P-P Liverpool

The Premier League has also issued a statement about the postponement of the game:

"This is a collective decision from the police, both clubs, the Premier League and local authorities.

"The security and safety of everyone at Old Trafford remains of paramount importance.

"We understand and respect the strength of feeling but condemn all acts of violence, criminal damage and trespass, especially given the associated Covid-19 breaches.

"Fans have many channels by which to make their views known, but the actions of a minority seen today have no justification.

"We sympathise with the police and stewards who had to deal with a dangerous situation that should have no place in football.

"The rearrangement of the fixture will be communicated in due course."

A couple of things we've seen on our TV feed from around Old Trafford over past couple of hours.

A police officer was seen having a chat with Gary Neville in the stand and the officer clearly had a cut around his eye, which had been taped up.

And from the aerial shot over the stadium, a group of people appeared to be trying to stop cars on the busy Chester Road nearby.

    John Murray
BBC Radio 5 Live commentator at Old Trafford

I'm standing inside the perimeter of Old Trafford. There is still a police helicopter circling Old Trafford and I've been told that a number of people have gathered where the team coaches would arrive and outside the team hotel.

The team coaches had to get here safely and when the statement says safety is paramount I think that's what it comes down to and why there is this postponement.

  8. 'We acknowledge the right to free expression'published at 17:39 British Summer Time 2 May 2021

More from Manchester United's club statement:

"Our fans are passionate about Manchester United, and we completely acknowledge the right to free expression and peaceful protest.

"However, we regret the disruption to the team and actions which put other fans, staff, and the police in danger. We thank the police for their support and will assist them in any subsequent investigations."

  9. 'Postponed due to safety and security concerns'published at 17:39 British Summer Time 2 May 2021

    Man Utd P-P Liverpool

Manchester United have released a statement confirming the game has been postponed.

"Following discussion between the Police, the Premier League, Trafford Council and the clubs, our match against Liverpool has been postponed due to safety and security considerations around the protest today," said United.

"Discussions will now take place with the Premier League on a revised date for the fixture."

Sky News have reporter Frazer Maude outside the Lowry Hotel in central Manchester, the place where the Manchester United squad is staying. He says a couple of hundred fans were protesting outside the hotel earlier.

He says there are no fans there now and that they are not stopping the United coaches leaving for Old Trafford. Police cordons are in place around the hotel.

If fans make up 50% of the ownership are they going to be responsible for any losses? Are they going to put up money for a new stadium or for players or when a club gets relegated? Maybe they think that all these clubs losing money each year somehow are actually making huge amounts? It's fantasy.

Outside the stadium, there are still a couple of dozen supporters waiting for the teams to arrive.

Everything is peaceful and good natured but there is no sense they will be leaving any time soon.

We've been allowed back into the commentary box so we are sat where where we'd usually be at this point with around five minutes of the first half left.

We are awaiting a decision as to whether or not this game actually takes place. Discussions are continuing between the two clubs and the match officials and representatives from the Premier League.

As well as the security of the players, if and when they do arrive here inside the stadium, the discussions have to be how they get through the crowds of fans who are still congregated outside.

In these Covid times, there are usually two coaches per team so that means four coaches to get through the supporters before they actually get to the ground.

It's very much still a waiting game.

If you're just joining us, we are still waiting to hear if the match will be played today.

The game was supposed to kick off at 16:30 BST, but has been delayed after 200 Manchester United fans broke into Old Trafford to protest against the Glazer family's ownership of the club.

Here is the full story of what has happened at Old Trafford today.

Man Utd v Liverpool (kick-off TBC)

More as Man Utd fans get in touch on BBC Radio 5 Live:

Mark: Other callers have said the protests are unacceptable but as far as I'm concerned, the unacceptable thing is this is the clubs trying to steal the football league and structure from fans. One game being postponed is not a crime compared to that as far as I'm concerned.

United have got a long history of direction that's worked over the years. I admire the resilience for fans staying there for 17 years trying to get the Glazers out. They are desperate to get the game in the hands of the fans like it is in Germany and for those who say it weakens the product, look at Bayern Munich. To a degree, you have to push the boundaries.

Former England defender Micah Richards also agreed with Keane that the players would be raring to go and play today.

But Richards added that the longer the wait went on the more unlikely he thought it would be played today.

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane, at Old Trafford for Sky Sports, says he would want to get the game played today if he was a player - so long as their safety was ensured.
