Son Heung-min scored the only goal as Tottenham - in Nuno Espirito Santo's first game in charge - recorded a deserved 1-0 win over champions Manchester City.

Harry Kane was left out of the Spurs squad entirely against the club trying to buy him. He only returned to team training on Friday having returned late from holiday.

But Spurs did not miss him.

Jack Grealish, the British record transfer at £100m, made his first Premier League appearance for City but did not do much.

  4. 'Fans is what it is all about'published at 19:43 British Summer Time 15 August 2021

    Spurs 1-0 Man City

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo, speaking to MOTD: "Amazing! It was a good day. Hard work for the boys, they worked really hard, the distance they covered, the balance, the fight.

"Still a long way to go but most of the things the boys did well. It has been good, it has been hard work. Every time you come, new dynamics. We are knowing each other better and it is about creating this energy between us to keep us moving forward. There is always something new and always something to improve."

On fans' return: "It is amazing. It changes everything. Two or three months ago something was missing. The games were good but the fans is what it is all about, the edge of the game and the boys need it."

  5. 'Football is goals'published at 19:41 British Summer Time 15 August 2021

    Spurs 1-0 Man City

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to MOTD: "We allowed them too much, we could not control it, especially the simple thing when you lose the passes in certain positions it is always more difficult. Football is goals, Son Heung-min scored the goal, we could not.

"It is normal for a season with not much preparation. The spirit was good but we lost. I am more than surprised how good we have done many things. A lot players arrived too late for Euros, for Covid, for many things. Players come back and every week will be better."

On Jack Grealish: "He was excellent. He played with a personality and created chances. Unfortunately we could not win for him for his debut but he played really well. In terms of give me the ball he doesn't lose the ball, he is so dangerous close to the box.

"Kevin de Bruyne has not done one full training session, he needs to train. He will need time to play 90 minutes."

  6. 'It is the best feeling'published at 19:41 British Summer Time 15 August 2021

    Spurs 1-0 Man City

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham goalscorer Son Heung-min, speaking to MOTD: "It is incredible, I can't even hear what you say because it is almost empty now but still so loud. The fans deserved the win and I am really happy at the moment.

"It was a great feeling. So happy to be back with the fans, it is the best feeling at the moment. I scored a goal but without the team I couldn't score that goal. The team performance was incredible. I really enjoyed it even without the ball.

"We are really happy with the manager, it is positive around the changing room and that is important as a group. We want to be a tight group and that is the difference. I want to keep the positive energy as long as possible."

  7. 'City well out of the races'published at 19:40 British Summer Time 15 August 2021

    FT: Spurs 1-0 Man City

    Karen Carney
Former England and GB international on BBC Radio 5 Live

Tottenham in the second half were absolutely outstanding. Defensively they were good in the first half because Man City dominated possession. But in the second half it was like they grew in confidence.

They knew they had the upper hand in the counter-attack and they were physical. When you watch it all back you can really see they had Manchester City wrapped up. They were just really devastating on the counter attack and overall they deserved it.

Manchester City were well out of the races today and just couldn't keep up with them. They'll be disappointed with that, but Tottenham were the better team.

La Mariposa: Since Man City signed Jack Grealish: No goals, no wins, no points, no vibes, just losses and hairflips.

Steve in Milan: Grealish was excellent says Pep. Really for me his main contribution was being booked. Kevin is Peps only valid tactic.

    Manchester City

BBC Radio 5 Live have just asked Pep Guardiola if Manchester City will now intensify their pursuit of Harry Kane this week.

"We have the same guys as last season, just without Sergio [Aguero]," he said.

"I’m so delighted with the same guys who scored a lot of goals. I’m more than delighted with this."

Well that's that cleared up then.

Spudlud: I’ve always said that Spurs play well and win without Kane. Yes he’s a fantastic player but it’s not the end of the world if he goes. We’re better than when Bale left. Remember, Spurs got to champs league final without Kane.

Leo: Harry Kane value has been increased by 20 million today.

  13. 'Grealish was excellent'published at 19:19 British Summer Time 15 August 2021

  14. How did Grealish do?published at 19:18 British Summer Time 15 August 2021

    Spurs 1-0 Man City

It wasn't a terrible debut from £100m Jack Grealish - but it wasn't particularly good either.

He ranked sixth among City players for passes (43) and fifth for passing accuracy (89.6%).

Playing mostly on the left, he won five fouls, more than anyone else.

  15. 'Generally it was really good'published at 19:14 British Summer Time 15 August 2021

    Spurs 1-0 Man City

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola to Sky Sports: "We started really well. We had problems in some transitions and we weren't good enough. We conceded due to loose balls. In general, the intention to create chances we did much more but unfortunately we were not good enough to finish them and we lose the game.

"We lose the ball, they went in behind. Lucas Moura had the quality to drive with the ball. It happened because we could not make the simple things better. We lose the ball on the inside and they drive on the outside when it was clear we had to defend deep. Apart from that in general it was really good. Sometimes we lose the second balls but in general it was good.

"Two days ago was the first day we were together so I know players need time to come back mentally. One more week, it's still the beginning of the season so we need to start to win games. There are 37 more games. It is a long season ahead. We try to correct some things then after that we are going to come back with our best."

  19. 'They put the ball in the back of the net'published at 19:03 British Summer Time 15 August 2021

    Spurs 1-0 Man City

    Manchester City

Manchester City's Raheem Sterling to Sky Sports: "I thought we could have controlled the game better but we let them do exactly what they wanted to do and they did the most important thing in football which was put the ball in the back of the net when we couldn't.

"It was as simple as that. It's a difficult one to take but it's a long season.

"I thought we were on the front foot and they kept getting counter-attacks which we should have controlled better. We'll bounce back from this one.

"I have played with [Jack Grealish] a few times and it's a good one. It's still early days and we'll learn each other's game as the season goes on. Hopefully we'll play a lot more together.

"I thought the referee let the game flow a bit more which was nice. I thought he did well today. It's always difficult to start with a defeat but it's a long road and we have to keep focused so we can bounce back."
