After winning 12 consecutive away games in the Premier League between December 2020 and May 2021, Manchester City have lost each of their last two – 3-2 at Brighton on the final day of last season and today.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo to Sky Sports: "It was good I think. The atmosphere was special off the hard work of the boys. They make any crowd proud when they work so hard.

"It was strong. We were lucky because they had chances but the boys held on and they stayed in the game. We knew it would be tough. After that first 20 minutes we did better and we started getting our chances. In the first half we didn't finish so good. When we should have shot on goal we didn't do it.

"Not only him [Japhet Tanganga]. In terms of shape and our organisation the front three worked very hard and closed the gaps. It's very difficult to play against City with the way they build the first moment. It requires a lot of discipline so the boys did OK.

"I'm sure that with commitment and the talent we have, we will be a good team. We are in the process of that. I am learning every day and I am very proud of them today, very proud."

On Harry Kane: "Look, Harry Kane is one of the best players in the world, honestly. We are very lucky to have him. He has to get ready and help the team. We still have to go to Portugal then we think about Wolves."

Spurs manager Nuno Espírito Santo has won three times against Pep Guardiola in the Premier League - the joint-most of any coach, along with Jurgen Klopp, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jose Mourinho.

Manchester City

Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling, speaking to MOTD: "I thought we started well. We controlled the game better at times, we let them counter at times. It is the first game and we have a long way to go.

"We got in the right positions at times, we had one or two chances we could put away but we didn't and they did.

"The referee let the game flow. I thought he was brilliant today."

Manchester City have now lost three of their last five Premier League matches, as many as in their previous 27.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham goalscorer Son Heung-min, speaking to MOTD: "It is incredible, I can't even hear what you say because it is almost empty now but still so loud. The fans deserved the win and I am really happy at the moment.

"It was a great feeling. So happy to be back with the fans, it is the best feeling at the moment. I scored a goal but without the team I couldn't score that goal. The team performance was incredible. I really enjoyed it even without the ball.

"We are really happy with the manager, it is positive around the changing room and that is important as a group. We want to be a tight group and that is the difference. I want to keep the positive energy as long as possible."

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola suffered his first defeat in the opening game of a league campaign since 2008-09, when Barcelona side were beaten by Numancia.

His sides had won their last 11 season-openers before today.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham's Son Heung-min speaking to Sky Sports: "Obviously we wanted to start well in the first game of the season and with the fans. It was an incredible performance and everyone worked so hard to get these three points. Manchester City are currently the best team in the world so we fought for the three points and it means a lot to us at the start of the season.

"It's a great evening. We have missed the fans. Football is all about the fans. We played for them and support them. They meant a lot for me and for us. I am grateful they come to the stadium and support us. I really enjoyed this afternoon.

"We did a great job. We know Manchester City is one of the best teams in the world so we prepared really well. We worked hard in pre-season and we showed that on the pitch. The fans saw we are dangerous so it was a really good game."

On beating last season's goal tally: "There is no promise. I will try to do my best game-by-game. I will try to play for the team. The individual results will come automatically. We will see at the end of the season if I beat this record or not."

On Harry Kane: "We are all professional. We wanted to focus on this game no matter who is involved or not. Obviously Harry is so, so important for us. But let's see. Last season we didn't start well against Everton so we started well. I just want to enjoy this afterwards."

C Li: Do Spurs really need Kane? Sell him for 150 million and let Nuno build his own team.

Ross McDonald: Spurs have benefited enormously from having a manager with a plan and a full preseason with all our players who were far too average last term to get picked for their countries over the summer.

Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo, speaking to MOTD: "Amazing! It was a good day. Hard work for the boys, they worked really hard, the distance they covered, the balance, the fight.

"Still a long way to go but most of the things the boys did well. It has been good, it has been hard work. Every time you come, new dynamics. We are knowing each other better and it is about creating this energy between us to keep us moving forward. There is always something new and always something to improve.

"Japhet Tanganga was good. Not just him all the team, starting from the front. We defend from the front so everyone has to be engaged."

On fans' return: "It is amazing. It changes everything. Two or three months ago something was missing. The games were good but the fans is what it is all about, the edge of the game and the boys need it."

This is just the third time in Premier League history that the reigning champions have been beaten in their opening game of a campaign.

Funnily enough they've all been in the past six years - Leicester City in 2016-17 and Chelsea in 2017-18.

Tanganga in particular was brilliant, he nullified every threat down his side. Skipp and Hojbjerg did really good with the shift they had to put in. You can go through the whole team really. The front three of Moura, Bergwijn and Son were sensational at just picking the ball up and driving.

Manchester City were well out of the races today and just couldn't keep up with them. They'll be disappointed with that, but Tottenham were the better team.

Manchester City lose their first opening match of a Premier League season since a 4-2 defeat at Aston Villa in 2008-09.

Nuno is the first manager to win a competitive fixture at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in charge of multiple clubs.

He guided Wolves to a 3-2 Premier League victory there on 1 March 2020.

Terry: I can't believe Pep Guardiola loses first premier league game, seems Tuchel has broken this man. What a performance from Nuno Espirito team.

Oluwaseun Oluwadare: City losing so they can make Harry Kane feel wanted and push for the move more.

Andrew Mitchell: Let’s not deny the obvious - this City squad is loaded and are likely still favourites for the title despite this defeat. A loss for them today just makes the Premier League a little more interesting.

Tottenham in the second half were absolutely outstanding. Defensively they were good in the first half because Man City dominated possession. But in the second half it was like they grew in confidence.

They knew they had the upper hand in the counter-attack and they were physical. When you watch it all back you can really see they had Manchester City wrapped up. They were just really devastating on the counter attack and overall they deserved it.

Son Heung-min goes over to the Spurs fans to give them a round of applause and gees them up to make some more noise.

They barely saw him last season when he was getting all those goals and assists.

It's lovely to have fans back.
