Liverpool's seven-match winning run in the Champions League was ended by Inter Milan, but Jurgen Klopp's side progressed to the quarter-finals with a 2-1 aggregate success.

An outstanding finish by Lautaro Martinez was not enough for Italian champions at Anfield as the late goals by Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah in the first leg in Milan three weeks ago proved decisive.

Martinez gave Alisson no chance with an arrowed finish from 20 yards in the 61st minute.

But Inter's hopes of forcing extra time with a second goal faded when former Arsenal and Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez was sent off just two minutes later for a second yellow card.

Liverpool hit the woodwork three times in a bad-tempered game which, in addition to Sanchez's red card, saw six other players booked. After Joel Matip headed against the bar, Salah struck the post twice in front of the Kop.

Robert Lewandowski scored a hat-trick inside the opening 23 minutes as Bayern Munich thrashed Bull Red Salzburg to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

The Poland captain, on his 100th start in the competition, confidently stroked home two penalties inside 21 minutes, after twice being recklessly brought down by Salzburg defender Maximilian Wober, the second confirmed after a VAR review.

His first spot-kick, swept into the bottom-left corner, was his 40th goal of the season in all competitions. He added his third after chasing down an attempted clearance from visiting goalkeeper Philipp Kohn to tap in from close range.

Another mistake in defence allowed Serge Gnabry to add a fourth with a low shot that squirmed under Kohn, while Thomas Muller thumped in a fifth after the break.

Maurits Kjaergaard did at least mange a consolation with a powerful effort into the top-left corner.

But that only seemed to stir Julian Nagelsmann's team back into life, with Muller finishing off a well-worked move for number six before Leroy Sane thumped home late on.

Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer: "That was a statement win. I think we started well and had the penalties and from there it just took off. We're very happy with the performance today.

"I think we showed a different side of ourselves today and didn't concede as many chances on the break.

"We were also more stable in defence, which obviously gives us hope that things can continue in that vein."

  6. 'We lost the game, which obviously is not cool'published at 22:39 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2022

FT: Liverpool 0-1 Inter Milan (2-1 on aggregate)

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BT Sport, says: "The difficulties we had were pretty close to what I expected. Inter are a really, really good side, set up for these kind of games.

"Without playing brilliantly we had clear-cut chances. Over the two legs it's completely fine that they won one and we went through. We could've done better against an opponent that makes life uncomfortable.

"It was a really interesting game. In the end we lost the game which obviously is not cool, we didn't come here to lose a home game.

"The opponent caused us problems but if we had used our chances we win this game. We lost a lot of simple balls, which can happen and when the ball was in the air it was like slapstick with the wind.

"The counter-press was not really there. We were around challenges but not in challenges and we didn't get the momentum, that's what we were lacking."

Tonight’s 7-1 victory was the seventh time Bayern Munich have scored seven or more goals in a Champions League game, more than double the number of times any other team has managed that feat in the competition.

By the way... Mullered and Mullerdowski are featuring prominently on Bayern's Twitter feed.

Is it any wonder? Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller were brilliant this evening.

The first leg ended 1-1 in Austria, with Bayern needing a 90th-minute equaliser, but they stormed through tonight.

    Mina Rzouki
European football expert on BBC Radio 5 live

Inter fans will be very proud of their team. They're facing one of the best in Europe right now and they came to Anfield with a largely inexperienced team and managed to compete.

But if they are happy with this then I'd say they're not ready for the next step.

It's such a tough task but somehow Lautaro Martinez manages a worldie out of nowhere and that was the time to show your grit and take risks. Go down in a blaze of glory.

But in the end it was almost like they were satisfied that they'd given a good account of themselves.

That performance wasn't great to watch and it wouldn't have been great to play in.

But because of the state of the tie Liverpool's mindset was a bit different. If it had been different I really believe they would have been able to win this comfortably.

"Inter could have capitalised on some nerves from Liverpool after their goal but they didn't take that chance because of the red card and the momentum shifted back to Liverpool."

"I hit the post twice. It's OK - maybe in the next game I will score three. We lost the game and maybe that will give us a push and it's a good game to learn from.
