  1. No fear from Inter defender Bastonipublished at 19:26 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2022

Liverpool v Inter Milan (20:00 GMT, 2-0 on aggregate)

Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni insists any player who fears facing Liverpool at Anfield is “not in the right job”.

Liverpool have not lost at home for a whole year and have never lost a European tie after winning the first leg away (36 times).

“They have some top players who are up there among the best in Europe,” said Bastoni, a Euro 2020 winner with Italy.

“If you are scared to play in these games it is not the right job for you. I can’t wait for the game. I’ve been against top players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Vinicius Jnr, who are all top European players as well.

“Salah, (Sadio) Mane and (Diogo) Jota are all fantastic players but we will need to play very well and show our team spirit – that goes for me and all the other players.

“It is the first time for many of us playing at this level in Europe (Inter are in the last 16 for the first time in a decade) so it is an opportunity to improve and gain more confidence.

“It will be a wonderful experience. I’ve been dreaming of playing in English stadiums and got to do so at Wembley in the summer and that one went our way.”

It's the calm before the storm. Lots of Inter fans have made the journey to Anfield in the hope of seeing their team turn this tie around.

The champions of Italy warmed up for this match by hammering Salernitana 5-0 last Friday with Lautaro Martinez hitting a hat-trick.

    They will still believe.

Six-time winners Bayern Munich needed a late Kingsley Coman equaliser to avoid a shock last-16 first-leg defeat at an impressive Red Bull Salzburg.

Winger Coman ghosted in at the far post in the 90th minute and converted following Thomas Muller's flick.

Salzburg substitute Chukwubuike Adamu had netted the opener with a delightful curling finish into the corner.

The hosts could have nicked a second at 1-0, but Karim Adeyemi's shot was saved and Adamu's follow-up was blocked.

Fair to say Jurgen Klopp is really looking forward to this. Liverpool and Inter have been crowned champions of Europe nine times between them and the Reds boss writes in his programme notes: "What a fixture, hey?

"Liverpool versus Internazionale in the European Cup. Even saying it out loud makes you excited. When you think of Liverpool v Inter you think of a full and passionate Anfield.

"You think of it being electric and partisan. Our supporters need no team-talk for a fixture with this heritage. This special place will be a cauldron of energy tonight, I'm sure. And we will need it."

Lots of support for Ukraine on the streets outside Anfield. It's a blustery night on Merseyside as Liverpool look to finish the job against Inter Milan and book their place in the Champions League quarter-finals.

The team news should be interesting. With his side starting with a 2-0 first leg lead, does Jurgen Klopp rest one or two players or name his strongest available side?

Should he feature, this will be Mohamed Salah's eighth game since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations last month, where he played seven games - including several which went to extra-time.

  17. Klopp warns Liverpool players the tie is not overpublished at 18:56 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2022

"Inter Milan don't come here as tourists," said Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

"I know that they want to chase the game - that's what we want to do because we are not a team who defends results.

"If you have half-time and you are 2-0 up and have a team that thinks 'we are halfway through' then you are already on the wrong path.

"It's a much better result than I would've expected. The game didn't look like we would win 2-0 and for most of the time it was a really tough tie and a really difficult game to play."

  18. What happened in the first leg?published at 18:53 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2022

    Roberto FirminoImage source, Getty Images

Liverpool took a huge step towards the Champions League quarter-finals after scoring two late goals against Inter Milan in the San Siro.

The Reds looked set for a goalless draw in the first leg in Italy until Brazil forward Roberto Firmino got on the end of Andrew Robertson's corner to head his side into the lead.

Mohamed Salah added a second with a deflected effort from inside the box which means Jurgen Klopp's side take a sizeable advantage into the second leg at Anfield.

Italian champions Inter hit the bar through Hakan Calhanoglu and were on top for long periods of the second half before Firmino struck in the 75th minute. Liverpool scored from their only two attempts on target.

It was a particularly memorable night for midfielder Harvey Elliott, who became the youngest player ever to start a match in the competition for Liverpool at the age of 18 years and 318 days.

It was a near-perfect first leg for Liverpool away at Inter Milan as late goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah gave the Reds a 2-0 victory.
