And on that note, it's time to say goodbye after another enthralling night of Champions League football, and a night where the Spanish sides have reigned supreme...

European champions Chelsea have now got to go to the Bernabeu and get something, while Bayern Munich need to overturn a one-goal deficit against Villarreal back in Germany next week.

You can read Phil McNulty's report from Stamford Bridge, where Karim Benzema's hat-trick put Real Madrid firmly in control of the tie, and Gary Rose's report on Villarreal's surprise win against the Bundesliga giants.

    Until next time...

Real Madrid love this competition... they have now beaten the reigning champions of the Champions League in each of their last four such encounters, and for the sixth time in total, now the outright most of any side in the history of the competition (Juventus have done it five times).

Since the formation of the Champions League in 1992-93, only one of the previous 43 sides have overturned a first leg deficit of 2+ goals going into the second leg away from home, with Manchester United beating Paris St-Germain at the last-16 stage in 2018-19.

Real Madrid goalkeeper and former Chelsea man Thibaut Courtois: "It’s a good victory at a ground that’s always difficult to come to. We started well against a team who are very intense. We created chances, hit the crossbar, then scored two goals, then we missed two others.

"Their goal was a pity. I managed to get a touch but not well enough to stop it but then we started the second half directly with a goal.

"We can't think it’s done. Football is like this, an early goal from them can get them back in the game. We have to play our game with our fans pushing us on like against Paris and play as if we were level and needing to win the game."

@ Henry Whitfield 22:04. Why not take away all three Real goals and put Benzema in a Chelsea shirt? And while you're at it, in your own interesting world, can I have my own hair back?

    Alex, York

I wish I had you optimism Henry but our team haven't been playing well for a while, too many mistakes and can't see that stopping in Madrid!

  8. 'First 20 mins in Madrid crucial'published at 22:34 British Summer Time 6 April 2022

    FT: Chelsea 1-3 Real Madrid

    BT Sport

Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole: "Chelsea need to take the second half into the Bernabeu and start with that intensity. Southampton is important but this tie is not over.

"The first 20 minutes in Madrid will be crucial and the next goal massive."

Mark A Notley: Feel gutted after that. Madrid set up really well against us to be fair, and Benzema, just wow. But to start the second half in that fashion killed us. Not enough players have been consistently in-form offensively this season which is a worry. Wasted chances galore!

Lamplit: Chelsea didn’t play badly at all, Karim was sublime and one terribly timed mistake. It can still be done

  10. 'Play like this and we will get hammered at Real'published at 22:29 British Summer Time 6 April 2022

    FT: Chelsea 1-3 Real Madrid

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, speaking to BT Sport: "It is a heavy loss. It was one of the worst first halves that I saw from us here at Stamford Bridge. Individually and as a team it was by far not enough. It was far from our standards and then you lose games.

"Passing, where we passed, how we passed when we passed, when we attacked, the ball possession game... first half was so from any standards that we set ourselves that we cannot complain when we lose.

"We had 16 shots in the second half. You can always come back and win it but when you kill the game by yourself after 45 minutes it is harder and harder.

"No, we don't have to go to Madrid we have to go Southampton and it is very important to process this. It is crucial that we go to Southampton. If we keep playing like this we will lose at Southampton and then we will get hammered at Bernabeu."

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand: "Experience counts for a lot. [Ancelotti] will know what to do but he understands it is not over. He won't be over confident, he will go into the second leg professionally."

Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole: "Chelsea played well in the second half. First half was one of the worst performances I have seen from Chelsea for a long, long time."

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti: "Played well. Good control of the game, good build up from the back, dangerous counterattack. It was a good night but it is only the first half of this round.

"It was really good. We showed good organisation defensively. We had a fantastic performance up front from Benzema. A good performance.

"We have an advantage. We have to prepare for the next game in the league and then Tuesday will be another game. We have a lot of respect for this team who were the winners of the last Champions League."

  16. 'Benzema is the best number nine in the world'published at 22:15 British Summer Time 6 April 2022

    FT: Chelsea 1-3 Real Madrid

    BT Sport

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand: "This is the business end and he is still scoring goals. He has shot his team to the top of the league. They are flying and he is the talisman.

"When Cristiano Ronaldo was there Benzema had the humility to sit in the background because he knew what it meant to the team but now he has come out of the shadows.

"He is 34 and he is the best number nine in the world. He is another level. Goals, assists, link up play, slowing the game down."

Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole: "Benzema is getting better with age."

Former Liverpool and Real Madrid winger Steve McManaman: "He knows he doesn't have to fly into the box. He arrives really late and his experience counts for everything.

"Every time he steps on the pitch he looks like he will score. His movement is really clever."

Here is hat-trick hero Karim Benzema, speaking to Spanish TV: "They're magic nights, like the other day at the Bernabeu against Paris. Today we came out to win, to show we're Real Madrid. Things worked out well for us as we played well, from the first minute to the last.

"They're very important goals. I'm happiest to have scored the third as I missed one in the first half and I was thinking about that chance because it's very important to score goals. Then I got another and I’m very happy."

    FT: Chelsea 1-3 Real Madrid

    Karen Carney
Former Chelsea midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's going to be so difficult going to the Bernabeu 3-1 down.

But they are not out of it - if Thomas Tuchel gets his team selection right.

You saw in the second half they were very much front-footed. They have to put in players who will be brave one-on-one and go and take more risks as it was too slow and static in the first half.

If he gets his team selection right and they eradicate the mistakes, they are not out of it - it is only half-time, the old cliche.

Henry Whitfield: If you take away Mendy mistake, and you give the stone cold penalty... Totally different game. Some awful shots that go in another day - two goals isn't an impossible mountain to climb. Scoreline is misleading and I'm fully confident going into second leg.

  20. Benzema steals the showpublished at 22:02 British Summer Time 6 April 2022

    FT: Chelsea 1-3 Real Madrid

With his three goals tonight, Karim Benzema becomes the fourth player to score a hat-trick in back-to-back Champions League appearances after Cristiano Ronaldo (2017), Lionel Messi (2016) and Luiz Adriano (2014).

The Real Madrid striker is the first ever player to score a European treble against Chelsea in any competition.

With 11 goals this term, Benzema has now scored more goals than any other Frenchman in a single European Cup/Champions League campaign, moving one clear of Just Fontaine’s 10-goal tally back in 1958-59.
